Handcrafted you Harl’s

I am happy with my new handbag by Philippine social enterprise Handcrafted by Harl’s. They employ PWD’s to make leather goods by hand (cut, punch, and stitch). They do not have a catalog as they constantly update their on-hand inventory based on the available leather, and they never make the same bag twice as they are fond of using rough or rugged-finish leather. Each bag or wallet has unique markings and scratches which give them a distressed, vintage finish.

IMG_6726.JPG

My unlined handbag is perfect for my petite frame. It is roomy enough to hold my daily essentials, but still structured enough to make me look polished. The vintage look is something that will definitely improve with age.

IMG_6727.JPG

I was personally assisted by Harl and his wife, Sheila. My ordering process was quick and seamless. They were also helpful with my queries, as they do not have a catalog and I was only referring to the information they provided to make me decide which bag to pick.

IMG_6730.JPG
IMG_6731.JPG

I am happy with my new bag and it is really beautifully made. It matches all my outfits and I can see that it has been designed well. I hope that you will also consider buying a bag from Harl (just message him via Facebook or Instagram) and other social enterprises in the near future! You will be able to empower others while getting something made with so much love.

Pasta and Yarn

Yesterday, I was able to enjoy knitting while eating delicious Italian food at one of my usual restaurants, Cibo. This time, I tried something I’ve never had before- the penne al’amado with burrata.

The braised beef beautifully complemented the cheese, resulting in a flavorful meal that brightened up my Monday.

My red grape shake and coffee made lunch- and knitting- relaxing.

After finishing my meal, I proceeded to a store I have never been to before: Dreams Yarnshoppe. I was looking forward to it, and I was not disappointed.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The store had a killer inventory for such a small space!

IMG_6709.JPG

Prices were reasonable for the thrifty crafter.

IMG_6710.JPG
FullSizeRender.jpg

I ended up with a variegated ball of yarn and a pair of oversized needles to go with it. I also got some extra point protectors.

IMG_6712.JPG

I was definitely happy, and I carried on with my shopping. I got a 90’s pair of sunnies to update my look.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was similar to my old pairs of sunnies during my childhood. I am happy that skinny frames are back because I can be my 90’s self again somehow!

IMG_6716.JPG

I am lucky to have been able to enjoy my Monday with delicious food, a memorable retail experience, and some crafting along the way. I hope to discover more stores to inspire me create, write, and explore!

Faith, Food, and Film

Luti and I were able to go to Padre Pio Center at Libis, Quezon City yesterday. She is one of my best friends from high school, and we both had intentions to pray for.

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

It was a solemn, quiet place of worship. We did not feel like we were still stuck in the city.

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

We were able to do some shopping at the chapel store. I stumbled upon these cookies made of leftover bits of host from Dauis, Bohol. I had to buy a few packs to try at home.

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

The center has a spacious chapel where masses are held daily.

FullSizeRender.jpg

We then proceeded to St. Clare Monastery for more prayers.

FullSizeRender.jpg

We were also able to have our Padre Pio souvenirs blessed by the sister at the convent.

FullSizeRender.jpg

A hearty lunch at Breakfast Bin followed our prayerful journey.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Of course, dessert was obligatory thanks to the scorching summer heat. We both had ice cream at Maginhawa favorite, Papa Diddi’s. I had roasted strawberry and ube this time!

FullSizeRender.jpg

After our meal, I went to UP Cine Adarna to watch my grade school friend Ida Anita del Mundo’s film K’na the Dreamweaver.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was a beautiful love letter to the T’boli people and their rich culture.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Lake Sebu was stunning onscreen!

FullSizeRender.jpg

There were several scenes of t’nalak weaving, which was my favorite part about this movie. I love local textiles, so I’m all for promoting the art of weaving on film.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I was fortunate to be able to spend time to pray, appreciate delicious food, and watch a friend’s film. I also had the chance to do so with my friend Luti. Life is definitely more fun with a little help from our friends- and a lot of faith.

Puppies, Coffee, and Cinnamon

I had a latte with my favorite dog Ella yesterday as Barkin Blends Dog Cafe. You can expect to see me here on Sundays as it has already become my default happy place.

IMG_6648.JPG

It was time for Ella’s nap so I let her snooze on my lap.

IMG_6649.JPG
IMG_6650.JPG
IMG_6654.JPG

Of course, the cafe also has other dogs! I couldn’t resist having pics taken with the whole gang again.

IMG_6655.JPG
IMG_6656.JPG

After my fluffy adventure, I returned to Lil’ Orbits Mini-Donuts to have their cinnamon dozen.

IMG_6661.JPG

It was heavenly!

IMG_6662.JPG

If you want to be happy, spend time with dogs and have some mini-donuts! That formula has never failed me.

Have a great week ahead, friends!

Human Nature Launch

Yesterday, I attended the magalogue turnover and new product launch at Human Nature, a social enterprise that is close to my heart. The company launched its new anti-dandruff shampoo and reformulated body lotions. They also kicked-off their tenth year anniversary, which is happening this 2018.

I sell Human Nature products via my online store. Please do support and buy today! The company provides employment to Gawad Kalinga residents and beneficiaries. Plus, the products are affordable and effective. My favorites are the sunflower oil and Radiant Grace moisturizer.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Of course, a visit to Human Nature is never complete without their free-flowing brewed coffee (on the house!) from social enterprise Cafe Lugud.

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

Light snacks were served and this Pinoy pasta was delicious!

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

I also met Gel of Aurae Natura, a new social enterprise which sells essential oils! Their products look promising, and I love their packaging.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I continue to be a core advocate for Human Nature because they pay it forward. I have deep respect for a brand that champions the poor and encourages Filipinos to buy local. I hope that you will also buy Human Nature and experience the goodness today!

Thirty-Fun

This was me nine years ago. I was working at my first job in a local bank. I was mighty proud of my desk, my business attire, and PC! But I was not happy about my body. I was not confident even if I was not overweight. I just didn’t feel good about myself. I had no exercise, and I did not watch what I ate.

IMG_3069.PNG

Good thing I realized that the secret behind confidence is hard work! I started exercising by doing Zumba and cardio.

IMG_2456.JPG

I enjoyed food but I became more selective. Mindful eating became a healthier process since I made each meal count. I ate to live, rather than the other way around.

IMG_2874.JPG

I also supported social enterprises to remind me that the things I own matter as well. I use handmade, artisan-made objects to motivate me to live meaningfully and appreciate the littlest details.

IMG_2877.JPG

My quest for social enterprises has led me to a trip to Banaue with Knitting Expedition, where I learned basic knitting and met some awesome people.

IMG_2943.JPG

I never stopped enjoying food. I just did so in moderation.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I also continued supporting charities, like World Vision and PAWS.

IMG_2926.JPG

While waiting for the right opportunity for me, I attend conferences, seminars, and workshops to sharpen the saw, so to speak.

IMG_2796.JPG

Whenever I need good vibes, I visit Barkin Blends Dog Cafe to cuddle with my favorite chiweenie, Ella.

IMG_2837.JPG

So now, I am thirty-one and confident! I am happy with the life I have built for myself. I am excited to continue growing, learning, and being.

I hope you will continue following me as I improve myself!

Soup and Soul

I have been recently trying to reflect on the important things in my life. It was interesting to review my skills, and it has enabled me to find ways to improve myself. I signed up for seminars, conferences, and workshops to expose myself to industry experts and leaders. I read books, learned to knit, and prayed like it’s no one’s business.

I also became more selective of the food I eat because I want to make each meal count.

One of my favorite spots for mindful eating can be found in a lot of malls in the metro. Cafe Mary Grace serves a filling version of seafood chowder which always speaks to my soul. It’s a revival in a bowl. I enjoy it with the Mary Grace Tandem, an insanely delicious combo of grilled ensaymada and rich colonial-style hot chocolate. This meal has never failed me, and you have to give it a try.

You will find your soul and stay for the chocolate. It is truly a win-win situation each time!

FullSizeRender.jpg

Mini Donuts

One of the perks of exploring the metro is finding unexpected delights. I was surprised to find Mini Donuts during my recent visit to Sta. Lucia Mall. It has been years since I last had these. They were my usual treats at the Glorietta Playground (at the activity center) during the nineties.

Buying a dozen in 2018 was thrilling! I got mine in cookies and cream sugar.

IMG_6426.JPG

It is still so good!

IMG_6427.JPG

The flavor was just right and it was not too sweet. It went well with the coffee I purchased elsewhere. It was a tasty trip down memory lane.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Stumbling upon my childhood favorites can be a 90’s throwback. I am brought back to the days when I would worry about homework, replacing the batteries on my Walkman (which played cassette tapes!), and reading Sweet Valley High.

These Mini Donuts are a sweet reminder that the good old days were indeed special. I look forward to buying my next dozen over a cup of 2018 coffee!

Katsu x Strawberry Taho

Yesterday, I had the chicken katsu bento at Yabu. It was refreshing to knit and eat at a place which I have not visited in quite a while.

I missed grinding their sesame seeds!

IMG_6545.JPG

Of course, I also missed their delicious katsu. Quality and taste are still excellent after all these years.

IMG_6546.JPG

For dessert, I had strawberry taho from Soy Yummy. It was a yummy treat after running some errands at the bank.

IMG_6548.JPG

I like rediscovering trusted old places like Yabu because they do seem to get better as the years go by. Relatively newer places like Soy Yummy are worth trying out as well because you will never know when you will stumble upon a new favorite. Also, it keeps me young and current to try new things! I will definitely eat more fresh offerings this year (in moderation, of course). After all, I workout so I deserve this!

Breakfast and Lemonade

Yesterday’s brunch was this happy plate of bratwurst, beans, eggs, and mashed potatoes from Pancake House. It was called the My Breakfast Medley. It reminded me of an English breakkie, and it was delicious!

I also had lemonade with Yakult later during the day, and it is already my favorite variant of the drink.

FullSizeRender.jpg
IMG_6539.JPG
IMG_6543.JPG

I got to walk around the mall after mass and I got to spend some time inside The Craft Central. I enjoyed looking around the store, appreciating their planner wall, taking note of their handmade finds, and purchasing some yarn.

IMG_6541.JPG

I found this sign on their floor, and I could not resist taking a photo of it. If I could tell a story of how my day went, I would say that I powered through with brunch, some KFC for dinner, a killer lemonade, mass, and some handmade inspo. That should get me through the week with good vibes!

IMG_6542.JPG

On Top of Things

We had Mother’s Day lunch at a nice restaurant inside a five star hotel. While we were enjoying the sumptuous food, we also had the chance to view our city from this vantage point.

IMG_6513.JPG

It is quite humbling to note that while our urban sprawl is not the most striking of cityscapes, there is still beauty amidst the chaos. There are pockets of greenery and quiet places. I am reminded that there is hope in a city where you see the negative on the foreground.

Because when you focus on the bigger picture, you will see the potential of your life in a place that is worth stepping back for anyway.

May you also find your new perspective today, as we begin another week of hustling in this place we call home.

Comfort Brunch

Yesterday, I was feeling down because I had a difficult conversation with a good friend of mine. It was challenging for me to point out some painful truths to her, but it was worth the effort as we both understood what went wrong. Even if I was the one who had the upper hand, it was still uncomfortable to discuss things with a friend, especially since she is the sensitive type. However, sometimes these conversations are necessary to ensure that the people we love address their concerns. I promised myself a hearty brunch after that discussion.

I delivered that promise to myself in the form of corned beef and talangka brown rice from my usual, Breakfast Bin.

IMG_6497.JPG
IMG_6498.JPG

For dessert, I walked to Papa Diddi’s for corn and strawberry x double chocolate ice cream scoops.

IMG_6503.JPG

It was dreamy to eat it next to this charming Underwood typewriter, which is still functioning well according to the staff!

IMG_6505.JPG

I then proceeded to Human Nature to buy some necessities and have some of their in-house brewed coffee, Cafe Lugud! They have free-flowing coffee for all of their customers. I usually bring my own reusable tumbler and have a cup or two after shopping.

IMG_6506.JPG

I had a fulfilling day, even if it did not begin on an easy note. I am continuously working on myself, and being a good friend is one of the hats that I strive to wear. Of course, I should love myself before I can even be a friend to anyone. This is why I constantly find ways to improve, so that I can always say that I love being me!

Pixie Confidence

FullSizeRender.jpg

I frequently get asked when I will grow my hair long again, and the answer is probably never. I have enjoyed having pixie hair for years now, as it is a wash and wear style. It has saved me time and energy as my hair requires minimal styling, just a bit of wax and I’m good to go. It matches any outfit, whether I’m in workout gear, corporate, or casual clothes.

I like experimenting with lipsticks, and my pixie goes well with blue, gray, black, red, or pink lips. I enjoy looking fierce with minimal effort. I only go to the salon for a trim once a month. I purchase a jar of wax that lasts me a month and a half, and when I don’t have time to air dry my hair, I use my blower to get the job done. I use a strengthening shampoo from my online shop everyday to keep my hair sleek and clean. Lastly, it has also allowed me to stand out in a sea of long-haired maidens.

IMG_6484.JPG

If you are also considering a pixie cut, I would suggest that you go for it! It’s only hair, and it will grow longer if you realize that the pixie isn’t your cup of tea. I did not expect this level of commitment when I first had my pixie cut, but I fell in love with the minimalism of the whole process. Also, I can wear striking earrings without looking too extra! If you want a good excuse to wear sparkly bling and still look chic everyday, then go for the pixie cut. Try a bold lip while you’re at it. And always smile, because people will notice it more when you have very short hair.

Remember, a sleek hairstyle will never make you feel good unless you are already confident on the inside. Work on that first, then get the pixie. You can thank me later.

Calado Oh Na Na

FullSizeRender.jpg

I have recently shared with you my favorite handmade hoop earrings from homegrown brand Calado. My Mirasol spiral hoops were handmade in Dauis, Bohol by artisans who have inherited their skills in filigree and silversmithing from their ancestors. Their artistry can be traced back to the Spanish colonial times, and Calado is committed to preserving their craft through their handmade jewelry line.

I am impressed with the quality of my earrings, and I feel pretty whenever I wear them. I think one of the reasons why I feel confident whenever I wear brands like Calado is because I am a strong supporter of the local handmade movement. Becoming a conscious consumer has also let me be naturally drawn to goods which were ethically and fairly made.

I am happy that my earrings, just like many of my belongings, adhere to my handmade lifestyle. It is my hope that more people will discover the joys of conscious consumerism and the beauty of each handmade object. I will continue to share my handmade finds here on my blog, so watch out for my lifestyle posts! Together, we can all discover that hands will always be better than machines in terms of quality and heart.

Waffle Reward

Whenever I feel like giving up, I always remind myself that I am worth more than my mistakes. I have had my own share of shortcomings, but I have learned from them. I make sure to take note of my areas of improvement so that I will know what specific things I have to work on. I am determined to be the best version of myself by highlighting my strengths to reinforce my limitations.

Having said that, I do reward myself for small wins! Recently, I have been slaying through my workouts. I have decided to eat my favorite food as a personal backslap. For instance, I had this delicious bacon, egg, lettuce, and tomato (BELT) waffle sandwich from Breakfast Bin. It was delicious and satisfying!

IMG_6431.JPG

How do you self-audit your skills? What areas do you have to improve on? And how do you reward yourself for small wins? I hope that you will also find the balance between self-improvement and self-care!

Another Barkin’ Sunday

I visited Barkin’ Blends Dog Cafe last Sunday to get some good vibes from my favorite furry friends. I visit the cafe whenever I need a few hugs, licks, and cuddles.

I am never disappointed because the cafe has plenty of dogs to have coffee with. All dogs are clean, soft, and fluffy!

FullSizeRender.jpg

I was able to spend some time with lots of dogs!

What places do you go to whenever you need some good vibes? Do let me know! For now, consider visiting Barkin’ Blends at Sta. Lucia. You will definitely have a better day after meeting their dogs.

PAWS Feature on Rated K

Last Sunday, I was on Philippine news-magazine show Rated K for five seconds. I was there as part of the feature on The Philippine Animal Society or PAWS. Pet adoption is one of my advocacies, and I was blessed to have supported the PAWS Furst Date event last Valentine’s. All proceeds from their pop-up pet cafe go to the animal shelter, and all of the featured dogs and cats were adoptable!

IMG_6440.PNG

While I am waiting for my human Mr. Right, I carry on with supporting causes I believe in. I also shop from social enterprises like Human Nature

IMG_6433.PNG

I do intend continue supporting my advocacies even after I get married. It is only ideal to practice what I preach while I am still single and able to do everything that I can on my free time.

IMG_6439.PNG

If you are interested to adopt a shelter dog or cat, please contact PAWS to find out how you can meet your next best friend. I guarantee you that PAWS takes care of all their shelter animals, and they will ensure that you will be matched with a suitable furbaby. God bless you!

Mangga at Mali

Yesterday, I went to Malingap Central Food Hall for some roast beef, gelato, and good vibes.

But first, I posed by this 90’s wall because it made me happy!

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

Alfred’s roast beef did not disappoint! At less than P200, this meal was a winner.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Next, I had mangga & suman gelato from Manila Creamery.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was so delicious!

IMG_6399.JPG

Sunday food trips make me smile, and I love discovering new restaurants near my place. Do message me if you have any suggestions for me to try!

Spinach Tartufina Carbonara

Salta! (yes, it is really spelled that way) is one of my go-to Italian restaurants in Quezon City because they serve handmade pasta. I have a soft spot for chewy, handmade goodness, so it is not surprising that I have fallen in love with this their spinach tartufina carbonara. It is a light balance of flavors, complemented by the gooey, runny egg and parmesan cheese.

It is sunshine on a plate.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I highly recommend this pasta dish because of its genius play on light flavors. It is good for one hungry person, so be sure to eat it on an empty stomach so that you could appreciate its generous serving.

Enjoy!

The Craft Central Cafe

I have been sharing my craft journey here on my blog, whether it is through knitting, journaling, or brush lettering. I have been fond of working in cafes and restaurants, but sometimes, people tend to stare or blurt out unkind remarks when I stay at a place that is not necessarily for crafters.

This is why I am ecstatic that The Craft Central finally opened their cafe at Vertis North. It is close to home, packed with craft supplies and handmade goods, and is a safe space for crafters!

FullSizeRender.jpg
IMG_6335.JPG
IMG_6336.JPG

Their menu features light food, which is perfect for crafters to munch on during an hour or two of working.

IMG_6337.JPG
IMG_6338.JPG
IMG_6339.JPG

I was happy to discover that they also carry yarns and notions!

IMG_6340.JPG

I ordered the parmesan chicken picatta open sandwich, and it was delicious!

FullSizeRender.jpg
IMG_6343.JPG

I simply feel giddy whenever I am surrounded by handmade love.

IMG_6344.JPG
IMG_6345.JPG

The cafe has a balcony with succulents!

IMG_6346.JPG

For dessert, I had a brownie and their delicious americano.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was difficult not to feel happy as I was eating beside these jars of calligraphy ink...

IMG_6348.JPG

...and locally-made pins!

IMG_6349.JPG

The cafe also has decent WiFi connection, so I was able to watch the ADB Meeting via livestream.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I had a yummy meal, a productive seminar via the interwebs, and a new hangout! I will surely be back!
