Money & Me

I recently finished reading Money & Me by Sha Nacino. I read this book because I wanted to improve my spending habits while I am staying at home for now due to the lockdown. I am glad that I read this because I learned some key takeaways which I could apply to my life:

  1. Money is simply a tool to buy our basic needs. In order to make it grow, we should use it to invest in ourselves. One of the ways that we can improve ourselves through self-investment is through seminars. I personally believe in this because seminars have enabled me to learn, network, and develop my skills.

  2. We can all recover from credit card debt. I have never experienced this, but I believe that this chapter is important because so many people my age are in credit card debt.

  3. Happiness can be achieved if we learn that money is not the only way to achieve it. Living within our means is one of the ways that we can achieve happiness and peace of mind.

I recommend this book to everyone who would like to improve their financial literacy. Get this book here and learn more on how money can help you invest in yourself!

The Time Capsule

I just finished reading The Time Capsule by J.D. Ruiz a.k.a. GreenWriter on Wattpad. I purchased the physical copy of the book prior to the current lockdown, because I wanted to support local authors and rekindle my love for reading. Little did I know that this book would teach me valuable life lessons.

The novel follows Steph, an entrepreneur who goes to Bacolod for her late grandmother’s wake and burial. She then discovers her grandmother’s diary, and this leads her to an adventure that would trace important scenes in her late grandmother’s adventurous life. She also forms a bond with Erik, the local who would prove to be an entertaining guide and the key to Steph’s self-discovery and transformation.

The novel made me want to explore Bacolod myself! This book has the power to transport the reader to the beautiful province. I felt like a third wheel in Steph and Erik’s road trip, and this felt magical. We need more books like this during the pandemic because it gives us a semblance of travel and adventure while we are on quarantine.

I also learned a some key lessons from this book:

  1. “Why would I go back to my old life when I knew I had found more to live for? Love does not always have to be the reason we should fall…” (Erik, p.186)

  2. Travel is an invaluable tool for learning and self-discovery.

  3. Grief is a period to recover and know ourselves better.

  4. Our late loved ones can teach us a thing or two about life, love, and work. Reading their diary or writings can enable us to continue their legacy by applying their “teachings” to our own lives.

  5. We should not look down on people in the province, especially those who do menial work. Farmers, manual laborers, and those who work in the market have innate wisdom and trade knowledge. We should treat them with utmost respect as they can teach us lessons about their craft and lives.

I highly recommend this book if you are itching to travel during the pandemic. Not only will you enjoy a love story, but you will also learn lessons that you can apply to your pursuits in love, life, and work. Get this book here and experience a road trip that you will never forget!

Birthday 2021

I turned thirty-five last August 13. I was fortunate to have a lovely celebration at home. It was memorable, even if the lockdown prevented me from going out. I am healthy, happy, and fortunate to have another year in this world, and those matter more than partying until the break of dawn.

We started with my favorite Taiwanese biang biang beef noodle soup from Pilya’s Kitchen at The Grid Food Market.

Then, I ordered milk tea from Cha Cha Go Visayas Avenue.

I was later surprised with cappuccino cake and gifts from my partner Lorenz. He visited me despite living near checkpoints. Massive props to him! I think he is a keeper.

We had Angel’ s Pizza in creamy spinach dip.

I was also surprised with chocolate cake from Fifth Gear. I am truly grateful and honored to be one of their blogger partners.

Lorenz gave me gifts that are meaningful and special. I will treasure these, especially the titanium promise ring. More than its aesthetic quality, I appreciate it for the significance that it holds.

I am blessed to have a supportive family, a blog that allows me to work with the best people, and a loving partner who shows up everyday. I am a very lucky girl.

Mofii Wired Mechanical Keyboard

I am very happy with my Mofii wired mechanical keyboard. It is a true mechanical keyboard, with a quality USB cable that connects to a laptop or PC. I am very impressed with its quality, as its price points are affordable and reasonable. I was able to enjoy its functionality when I wrote a couple of write-ups earlier, and I must say that I am in love! It is a joy to use.

In order to change its light mode, just press Fn + PrtSc.

This keyboard is one of my best Shopee purchases to date. Buy it here and see it for yourself!

Sando All

My family and I enjoyed our boxes of tamago sando or Japanese egg sandwiches from Katsu Sando PH. Their take on this popular convenience store staple captures the Japanese gooey style of cooking eggs, resulting in a creamy and filling treat. I am satisfied with this meal, and I highly recommend that you try it!

Filipino hip-hop group Shockra returns with heist-themed video for new song “Operation 10-90”

Manila, Philippines; 11 August 2021 – After taking hiatus to focus on their booming individual careers, Filipino hip-hop supergroup Shockra returns with an epic banger inspired by the recent resurgence of heist-themed films.

Member rappers Abaddon, Crazymix, Flict-G, Tuglaks, Kial, Numerhus, Smugglaz, and Inozent One hop on a mythical beast of a track called “Operation 10-90,” which effortlessly blends their collective music influences with hard-hitting beats from Jan-C and Tha Black G.

“It took us two years to find the perfect beat for our comeback single,” Flict-G shares in a statement. “After finally deciding on the overall direction for this particular song, we decided to discuss and go ahead with our plan. We’re inspired by ‘90s action films, and somehow, we wanted to incorporate that vibe in our brand of provocative hip-hop sound.”

Released under Sony Music Philippines, Shockra’s“Operation 10-90” comes with a big-budget music videohelmed by rising creative filmmaker REIKA (Aya ReikaMayani), who is responsible for the game-changing visuals of James Reid, syd hartha, Because and ALLMO$T—to name a few. For her part, REIKA reinterprets the hip-hop collective’s affinity for heist staples with a refreshing new spin. The young director also turns Abaddon’s concept into a cinematic but entertaining thriller, while taking into consideration the other group member’s suggestions.

“REIKA really respects our vision for the track,” Flict-G explains. “Unlike other directors, she’s very receptive to our opinions. I also admire her team’s professionalism and commitment to deliver a quality, timeless material that complements the music’s thematic bigness.”

The 10-minute short film features the individual members of Shockra as a gang of robbers trying to outwit the authorities in their bid to escape poverty and start a new life. With excellent ensemble performances and intensely choreographed action scenes, the music video of “Operation 10-90” sets the gold standard in hip-hop filmmaking, while making sure not to sacrifice the group’s crossover tendencies.

The music video of Shockra’s “Operation 10-90” is slated to drop at 7pm, today on YouTube. Shockra’s new singleis also available on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines.

Your Feelings are Valid

Recently, I have been writing on my Your Feelings are Valid journal by Sincerely, Kristine.

It has helped me solve my worries and fears.

I was able to navigate through my emotions and deepest traumas.

I was also able to understand myself better.

I highly recommend this journal, especially now that we are facing many uncertainties. While I am not facing any mental struggle in my life, I must say that psychological first aid has been a valuable resource.

You may buy this journal here. Stay safe, everyone!

Life is Too Short

Today, I finished reading Wake Up, Dreamers by Filipina author AnakniRizal. I first discovered her on Youtube, and instantly became hooked on her vlogs. I enjoy watching her videos because she teaches writing. As someone who is currently in the process of self-publishing my book, I am really inspired by her techniques.

She teaches systems the she has personally tried and tested, and her success speaks for itself. And after reading two of her novels, I have observed that she inserts inspirational and motivational content in her works. Even though I am turning 35 in a few days, I still feel young after reading her books.

Here are some of the lessons that I have learned from reading So, This is Youth and Wake Up, Dreamers by AnakniRizal:

  1. Life is too short

  2. Life is full of possibilities

  3. Education does not end upon graduation

  4. Age is just a number. It is never too late to make things happen for you

  5. Always believe in yourself even if no one else believes in you

  6. Success is following your heart and taking action on your dreams

Please buy Wake Up, Dreamers here and access So, This is Youth here! You will definitely learn a thing or two from these novels and support an up and coming author in the process.

Happy reading!

Juan Karlos Makes His Comeback In EDSA-Set Music Video

What could have been the view if you took a different route?

One afternoon in July, a pickup truck was seen strutting across the busy stretch of EDSA. Sitting at the back was a young man, strumming a guitar while singing a melody amidst the unruly noise of the urban traffic.

That is how Juan Karlos returns to the OPM scene. His comeback single, Boston, was released last week with a music video that uses a simple yet meaningful treatment to intricately capture its message.

Boston is about a past love--one that is outlined in bittersweet longing and reminiscence. The old memories, as well as the ‘what-could’ve-beens’, were carefully and honestly expressed through a narrative that is carried by Juan Karlos’ unique sound.

Directed by renowned photographer Shaira Luna, the music video used a guerrilla approach to show this faint yet lingering string of emotions. With EDSA as the setting, Juan Karlosplays his guitar and sings to the fragile folk-rock melody of his new masterpiece while on a moving yet unsteady journey to an undefined destination.

Juan Karlos wholeheartedly sings every word of the song, only to be drowned by the overlapping noise of the metro. This is the reality told through this piece of music--the futile pouring of one’s heart to somebody who can no longer hear a single word that is uttered.

The rocky highway, the rapidly changing scenery, and the trail of endless vehicles paint a familiar picture of moving forward while aimlessly navigating a space that is unpredictable yet repetitive at the same time. This scene perfectly illustrates the story behind the song’s lyrics--that of an uncontrollable situation that led to a choice of letting go of what is now the source of longing.

Boston’s visual narrative is the brainchild of a passionate team headed by Otto Hernandez and Steven Victor, who are both in charge of its Overall Creative Direction.

About Juan Karlos

Juan Karlos is a Filipino band and six-time Platinum awardeesigned under MCA Music composed of JK Labajo on vocals and guitar, Jeriko Aguilar on guitar, Louise Bayas on bass, and Gian Hipolito on drums. Formed in 2018, the eponymous band went under several personnel changes and ultimately released their smash hit, “Buwan” in the same year.

Frontman JK Labajo shared that his solo music career is currently inactive. Hailing from Cebu, he first gained recognition as a finalist on The Voice Kids Philippines and went on to pursue a career in music and acting. Following the release of his albums under MCA Music, JK (2015) and JKL (2017), he realized that he has to stop settling and commit to what he really wants: to write, produce, and perform his own songs the way he hears it in his head and heart and be part of a band. Juan Karlos aims to “dream big or go home” and to make a mark in OPM and globally. “I want to be able to make a change, a difference,” he said. I want to show people the importance and beauty of music. I'm in music for the art, to earn in order to fund my daily needs and dreams, and for recognition so I can have reach and to be heard.”
