Staying Strong

Yesterday, I decided to frog my crochet stitches and begin again with a knitted shawl. I was unhappy with the uneven edges, so I decided that it was best to knit it instead.

I also joined in some Halloween festivities at the mall.

I relaxed with a coffee float.

And had hairbrushes made for me and my mom!

Before going home, I had a quick dinner at Yoshinoya.

And upon going home, I instantly brushed my hair.

I may rock a pixie, but I still brush my hair! It helps me unwind from all the challenges in life. I stay strong with fiber arts, food, and simple joys.

Spoonfuls of Hope

I had some free time to spare from my obligations, so I decided to knit and eat this adobo flakes naked burrito from Army Navy.

I also swung by Maginhawa to visit Makers Cafe, which serves light food, coffee, and local merch.

I bought a pair of Pulseras by Kim spoon earrings because I love using one! I’m a proud Pinoy spoon user in a world that predominantly uses fork and knife to eat.

I was also delighted to receive a postcard from my high school friend Nurai, who’s based in Germany. I’m touched that she remembered me during her trip to London!

Lastly, it was a real treat to receive snail mail from the Pink Sisters convent.

Comfort food, basic bling, and snail mail all give me hope amidst challenges. I look forward to more simple joys to keep me going. 

From Manila to Cainta

Crochet and Massage

I recently had to buy some essentials at Daiso, so on top of all my supplies, I stocked up on some new toys. I got a foot roller, a pressure point stick, and a 4mm crochet hook.

I’ve been hearing positive feedback about Daiso’s craft supplies and notions, so I was really excited to try their crochet hook. And it did not disappoint! It was perfect as it rested comfortably on my ring finger as I alternate between pen and knife grips.

Making It

Recently, I had the chance to visit Conrad Manila. I was there for the Million Meal Marathon, and I got to relax after my volunteer shift.

Lately, things have not been good. I am facing challenges, but I still remain positive. I am making it through each day with some knitting, crocheting, and strength.

Rise Against Hunger 2018

Yesterday, I participated in the Rise Against Hunger Philippines Million Meal Marathon event. I went to Conrad Manila’s Taft Ballroom for an afternoon of volunteering.

I also wore a mask. All sanitation gear were provided onsite.

We were assigned to pack champorado soy and rice meal packs. They will be sent to the needy in Visayas and Mindanao.

I am truly honored to be part of this event. I was also there during their last meal packing marathon in 2017. In the midst of all the body shaming I have to endure, it is humbling to know that many of our brothers and sisters have to live without adequate food and nutrition. I am glad to be reminded to be thankful everyday, and to extend a helping hand whenever possible.

Hi! I’m Sam, the blogger behind speakoutsam.com. I enjoy knitting and crocheting scarves without a pattern because I love mindlessly and mindfully (it’s a paradox, I know!) crafting while going about my day. I write about my daily life with hypothyroidism, and how I conquer it with exercise, meaningful endeavors, and eating well. I also enjoy creative journaling and drinking coffee.

Barkin’ Break

Recently, I received some sad news about a family member. I would have to care for the said family member during my free time, so my blog might take a backseat for the time being. But I will still try to show up here whenever I can!

Climate Change Forum Day 3

Yesterday was the conclusion of the Climate Change Adaptation Forum 2018. I focused on risk management in the age of climate change, and I was able to listen to experts from the government, the academe, and business talk about utilizing risk management to prepare for changing times. 

I have already made it a personal tradition to have full-body photos taken by ADB’s signage outside the auditorium.

I had a wonderful time this week at the ADB, and I hope to have more chances to return! There are heaps of topics being covered in their conferences, and it is always a pleasure to represent my blog.

Climate Change Forum Day 2

The second day of the Climate Change Adaptation Forum 2018 was just as insightful as its first one. In keeping with the theme of the event, I chose to wear my fanny pack which I bought from eco-conscious social enterprise Rags 2 Riches

I learned that skills training is essential to sustain a green economy. Many jobs will be developed when there are skills acquired from education and training. A couple of decades ago, it was difficult to imagine a paperless office or a massive BPO industry. But thanks to technology, both are now the norm. If technology can revolutionize how we work, then surely the environment can also influence businesses to create jobs which can support green industries.

Social protection in the form of jobs and livelihood training is crucial to ensure that no one is left behind. Tech also plays a crucial part in ensuring that those in remote areas enjoy green jobs. An example of which are electronic cash transfers and app-based jobs such as Grab.  

Governments in the Asia Pacific region must incentivize companies that support the green economy. An example of which is the Green Jobs Act in the Philippines, which is a pioneering law in the region.

If the public and private sectors will work together to ensure that there will be a chance for green jobs to be created, then environmental, economic, and social connections will emerge. The goal is to thrive, not just survive in the age of climate change. And while we cannot prevent it from happening, we can all do our part to limit the negative effects of climate change.

I was able to meet new friends during the cocktail reception after the second day sessions! It was great to network with colleagues who are also passionate about integrating eco-consciousness in our work and lifestyles. 

I hope that the third day will also be as inspiring and fulfilling. 

Climate Change Forum Day 1

Yesterday was the first day of the Climate Change Adaptation Forum at the ADB. It was good to be back for more learning on how I can do my share to adapt to climate change.

But first, breakfast. I had Vietnamese sardines, cheese omelette, rice, and coffee.

Then, it was time for the sessions at the auditorium.

I learned that we must shift from mere risk management to transformation. A transformation mindset will help us change our lifestyle in order to be more eco-friendly and energy efficient. That way, we will be “forced” to do what is inconvenient in order to face the reality that we must care for the environment more  

We must also approach problems as opportunities in these changing times. 

It was also a treat to see my idol from the 90’s, Antoinette Taus. She is now an environmentalist and she performed during the event.

ADB Deep Dive Workshop

Yesterday, I attend the Deep Dive Workshops for the 2018 Climate Change Adaptation Forum at the ADB. I have learned that women must be included in development because we are the foundation of the family, which is the basic unit of society. I have also learned that renewable energy is the way to go, because sustainability is key to prevent further damaging our environment.

We must all do our part to prevent climate change from getting worse by researching on ways that we could help. We must live on less in order to enjoy our resources more. And as a woman, I feel empowered that I can do more in my own capacity now that we are being included in development. 

I look forward to the rest of the forum, and I hope to meet people who can keep the conversation on sustainability going!

Body Love

Recently, I’ve been getting body shamed for gaining weight. First of all, I tell people that I have hypothyroidism. They can research it online to understand my condition. My weight isn’t something I can control, but I try to manage it with daily exercise and a proper diet.  

I can say that for someone with hypothyroidism, I’m looking fine!

Body shaming is something that we should stop once and for all. Rather than focusing on one’s weight, we must look for factors to compliment. Traits like intelligence, generosity, and substance must be given more importance than weight. ​

I hope that when you have the urge to body shame someone, you will think of people like me who struggle with it, but do our best to win at life. And if ever you get body shamed, do know that there is nothing shameful about you. Just smile, and tell people that they are being rude. And try to make your day better with a workout and a healthy meal!​

Music and Beer

Sometimes, I enjoy a cold one while listening to live music. Last night, I got to watch The Bloomfields play a mostly Beatles set and it was fun!

Mind you, I don’t drink to get wasted. Rather, I just enjoy the vibe and sing along to familiar tunes.

Normally, I would go for coffee to perk me up, but beer works too. I hope to have more memorable times with a cold one and a rad band. 

Knitting Myself Together

I first learned how to knit at Banaue. I realized that  it might be something I would enjoy, so I persevered until I eventually finished my first scarf

Since then, I continued to knit like it’s no one’s business. By now, I know that I prefer working without a pattern. Focusing on scarves and beanies make me happy as I mindlessly knit during meetings and events. And yes, knitting helps me​ focus during discussions. 

This is why I am glad to finish another scarf, this time an infinity one which could be rolled to be a chunky wrap around the neck, a tube top, or rolled to an even smaller size to be a loose cowl. ​

I knit because it gives me a sense of purpose, no matter what. I will continue to do so because it gives me joy, and I know that it will empower me even during those times when I feel weak. Knitting is my strength.

Self-Care and Sukiyakidon

Yesterday, I had my monthly pixie trim at a salon at Maginhawa. I’ve been experimenting with different salons every month, and I’m glad that I found a salon that’s perfect for my hairstyle and budget at every major location I frequent. I’m happy I found a salon at Maginhawa that can do a mean pixie because I’m always there for lunch or dinner.

Speaking of lunch, I ate at Happon for the vibe and the delicious Japanese food.

I ordered their sukiyakidon, and it was the perfect self-care meal. It was delicious!

I hope that you can also find a place that you can go to whenever you need a dose of self-care. It pays to know that you can rely on some places that can uplift your mood and comfort your soul. Your happiness should not be someone else’s job, it’s yours. So make yourself happy, and always schedule in some self-care. 

Kindness and Direction

Yesterday, my car had a flat tire. Luckily, I was able to drive to the mall and park properly.

I was assisted by the guards at Vertis North. They expertly changed my flat tire and assured me that everything will be alright. They even refused the tip that I was giving. They were polite, professional, and kind. My faith in humanity has been restored.

I then proceeded to the Ayala Museum for the Insulae Indiae Orientalis exhibit of antique maps and prints.

I was so excited for this as I am a map nerd at heart! I simply had to catch it on its first day of exhibition.

I was greeted by the rarest maps which stirred my feelings of nationalism.

Finally, I was able to reach the Murillo Room, which showcased an assortment of extremely rare Murillo Velarde Philippine maps from the 18th century.

It was a beautiful exhibition! The maps were breathtaking, and the corresponding materials were interesting companions to the stars of the show. I am fascinated with antique maps mainly for their beauty, but now, I also see them as significant tools for nation-building. I hope that you will also be able to appreciate antique maps, and get the chance to view them whenever they are exhibited to the public.

Weekly Hits

There are things that I simply enjoy doing on a weekly basis. For starters, I HAVE to eat Breakfast Bin’s toasted naked longganisa with brown talangka rice every week.
