Malaysian singer-songwriter liesl-mae opens up about depression on her new single ‘Raincloud’
Malaysia-based singer-songwriter liesl-mae reflects on her struggles with mental health in her compelling new single “Raincloud.” Addressing the cyclical nature of depression and its damning effects, the inspiring young artist hopes to engage in a discussion to dismantle the social stigmas surrounding mental health.
The song begins with a posed question: “When was the last time you felt happy?” On the surface, it is a seemingly benign inquiry. However, unable to respond, the question initiates an unexpected internal monologue traversing the uniquely human blight of depression and anxiety. Artfully woven together with vivid metaphor and thoughtful lyricism, liesl-mae puts the feelings of hopelessness into words that creep malignantly into one’s mind – lying restlessly in wake.
Her pristine vocals shine brightly through the track’s guitar-driven melodies, ambient pads, and pulsating basslines. Gradually building up from an intimate, campfire-esque start to a grandiose conclusion, the track brims with elaborate orchestral arrangements and ebullient drumming. An old soul at heart, liesl-mae’s deceptively simple songwriting has captivated the hearts and minds of her rapidly growing constituent of fans, desperate to seek out a voice that speaks to their own experiences.
On writing about mental health, a topic the burgeoning songstress handles with the utmost care and consideration, liesl-mae approaches “Raincloud” as if it were an “open letter to depression” itself. Steering clear of accusatory language or being overly critical of herself, the song’s gentle and unassuming approach to storytelling allows it to explore some of life’s most difficult, and oftentimes pertinent, questions in a congenial manner. Despite how life may appear on the outside, the song is in essence about “feeling bad for feeling bad.”
The inexplicable nature of depression causes a neurotic downward spiral into self-loathing – “wishing bad things upon myself to make up for feeling bad” explains liesl-mae. “For the first time, I channelled anger into my music… [It’s] an emotion I'm not used to outwardly expressing. Carefully crafting the sonics of the track with Mixed by Wong (engineer), “Jose Ong (producer) was really able to bring those feelings to life with the arrangement of this song. It was a very cathartic experience to be able to let it all out.”
Having opened for the Here Comes July pre-listening party for Sinarku on the 27th of August, liesl-mae also made her festival debut at Good Vibes Weekender on 24 September, alongside the likes of Jackson Wang, Pink Sweat$, and beabadoobee, to name a few. Working towards the release of her first full-length EP in the former half of 2023, liesl-mae’sartistic sails have just begun to unfurl.
“Raincloud” is out now on all digital music platforms via OFFMUTE.

ADB, Dhiraagu to Expand Internet Access in Maldives Through New Undersea Cable System
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (26 October 2022) —The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Dhivehi Raajjeyge Gulhun Public Limited Company (Dhiraagu) have agreed on a $20 million debt financing facility to expand mobile and internet coverage in Maldives by supporting the company’s capital expenditure requirements and helping to finance the SEA-ME-WE 6 Submarine Cable System (SMW6) that will connect the country to the global digital superhighway.
The debt financing includes a recently signed $9.1 million facility as the first tranche to support Dhiraagu’s general capital expenditure and working capital requirements such as network capacity upgrades, expansion of data centers, and mobile service enhancements in and outside the capital Malé. A second $10.9 million will finance further general capital expenditure and funding requirements for SMW6— an undersea cable system that will connect Maldives to Europe and Asia via the Middle East which will be approximately 15,000-kilometer long.
“Mobile and internet connectivity is important for socioeconomic growth and development,” said ADB Private Sector Operations Department Director General Suzanne Gaboury. “It’s crucial for island nations like Maldives, where public services are difficult to provide as the population is spread across numerous islands. This is ADB’s first private sector infrastructure financing transaction in Maldives, which will help to deliver faster and more affordable internet connectivity and be a crucial enabler of private sector investments and regional connectivity.”
The internet and mobile phone penetration rate in Maldives is higher than in most of its South Asian neighbors. However, due to the high cost of providing services to almost 200 inhabited islands across the country, fixed broadband has not yet been rolled out to communities on many of the smaller islands.
“This loan from ADB will help finance some of our critical projects that require foreign currency financing,” stated Dhiraagu Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed. “We are focused on expanding our fibre-to-the-home reach and strengthening our digital infrastructure to ensure that high-speed broadband and high-quality digital services can be enjoyed even at remote islands across the country. Our recent initiative to connect the Maldives to the SMW6 submarine cable system will add further resilience and diversify our global connectivity, bringing Maldives a step closer to becoming a global digital hub.”
Expanded telecom coverage on remote islands of Maldives will provide communities with enhanced access to online services such as education and health care, reduce development gaps between urban and rural areas.
Dhiraagu is the leading digital service provider in Maldives, enriching the lives of the people living in the island nation. The company has enabled 100% mobile coverage across the country and fixed internet coverage available to 85% of Maldives households. A comprehensive range of mobile, internet, data, IPTV, mobile money, and fixed services are offered to their customers.
ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.

Cadian Studios is currently making huge strides as a creative and media agency that pushes the boundaries of storytelling through innovative technology and music production.
Taking pride in working with established record labels in the Philippines (Viva Records, Warner Music, O/C Records) and Web3 brands in Singapore (Imaginary Ones and Imaginary Junior), the talented team of creative strategists, producers, art directors, and sound engineers stand poised in affirming its place with delivering world-class production and content creation.
To date, Cadian Studios has generated millions of earned online media impressions from content produced with brands and artists, something that its 27-year-old founder and CEO Ron Pangyarihan could attest.
“Our culture sets us apart from other creative and media agencies,” shares the budding entrepreneur, writer, and music producer. “It is the backbone of our company. Our culture of creativity and collaboration allows us to transform stories into remarkable experiences. We dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of putting our clients' ideas into world-class production to create stories that communicate and inspire.”
Aside from overseeing the development and creative executions of the company, Pangyarihan is also passionate about building things that make a positive impact. He writes and creates music for Color The Era, his solo project under Viva Records.
While Cadian Studios had its share of challenges during its inception, the production agency is fortunate enough to be in a position that allows people to be the best version of themselves.
“One of the biggest challenges we experienced during our first few months was building a good culture from the ground up,” says the young CEO. “Culture impacts the continuity of a company the most. At Cadian Studios, we do not treat people as resources but as humans. Everything we do is a work of art so I know every single piece of content that we produce is made with our hearts. I believe the culture of creativity and collaboration will take us far.”
Few years from now, Cadian Studios aims to be on the frontier of creatives and media, hoping to build a legacy of reputable magnitude to cater to the needs of the industry, despite the ever-changing trends. “We want to work with the greatest storytellers and push the boundaries of storytelling by producing high-quality and remarkable content that impacts people,” Pangyarihan adds.

New Zealand-based singer-songwriter Mitch James finds unexpected success with vibrant pop single “motions”
Fresh off performing at the New Frontier Theatre in the Philippines, the chart-topping international artist is set to release his sophomore album, patience next month
New Zealand-based singer-songwriter Mitch James is currently making waves in the Philippines with the unexpected success of his catchy, breezy pop track “motions.” The sleeper hit, which showcases the inevitability of “losing yourself on the way of finding yourself,” sits comfortably at the third spot of RX 93.1’s Monster Top 5 charts, and has been gaining consistent airplay on various top 40/mainstream radio stations all over the country.
Co-written with Graham Letterman and Ryan Short (who also happened to produce the laid-back single), “motions” is inspired by the constant roadblocks in Mitch James’ life, health, and career. Despite the inevitable challenges that almost deterred him from getting out of the trenches, he helmed “motions” as a way to find a silver lining within all of the messiness that he’s encountered in recent memory. “It’s inspired by real-life events that happened to me,” the promising new act shares in a statement.
Last week, the chart-topping international artist performed at the New Frontier Theatre in Quezon City, Philippines asa front act to British pop superstar Calum Scott. Armed with just a 7-song set and a guitar, Mitch James brought his A game with originals such as “Got Today,” “Bright Blue Sky,” “Japan,” and his current smash “motions.” Hebrought a level of warmth and comfort that resonates so closely to everyone in the intimate venue; it almost felt like home.
“I think what fascinates me about the Philippines is the people,” muses Mitch James. “I know I’ve said it a lot today, but the Filipino audience are so genuine and kind and passionate about everything. It’s very fascinating, and I can’t wait to explore more about the place, the culture, and the music.”
Mitch James is also gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, patience on November 4, 2022. According to the pop/folk/acoustic musician, the upcoming new record serves as a summary of the last four years of his life.
“It chronicles very much a rollercoaster journey of ups and downs of my life: falling in love, getting your heart broken, and seeing the people you love dying,” reveals the 27-year-old singer-songwriter. “It’s a real look at life with no extra frills attached. It’s all just real stuff—and the real stuff can be good stuff, bad stuff. It’s all real at the end of the day.”
Mitch James’ new single “motions” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Pre-order his new album, patience here.

WATERWALK RECORDS closes out the yearwith compelling worship releases from of MERCURY’s Nathan Huang and newcomer Cherise Katriel
WATERWALK RECORDS, a label under Sony Music, focused on bringing fresh Christian music to a new, streaming generation, announces its latest batch of releases committed in delivering the breadth and richness of God’s teachings.
Amplifying their spiritual journey through songs that resonate on a personal level, the label’s roster of faith-based music acts continues to inspire listeners to seek enlightenment in the face of adversity, and to believe in the higher being’s immeasurable grace and healing power.
Newly signed artist Cherise Katriel marks her official debut with the release of “Walang Katulad,” a stripped-down pop ballad that sings praise about God’s infinite and unconditional love. Produced by Jungee Marcelo, Katriel’sworship track aims to “shift your heart into gratefulness for God’s love.”
The talented newcomer adds, “It's relaxing, comforting, soothing, and calming to listen to. I do believe the goal was reached because about a week after releasing it, one person messaged me and was sharing how stressed she was feeling, but when she listened to this song, it's as if she was being comforted.”
Serving in the ministry for years, Katriel was offered an opportunity to relay inspiring words of healing and worship. “Walang Katulad” is a refreshing introduction to her work as an artist: an honest, captivating material that paints a powerful imagery of divinity and praise.
“I am so blessed to be part of the WATERWALK RECORDS family because they have given me an opportunity to express my heart through music and they made a way for one of my compositions to get out there,” shares the new Christian pop artist. “Sir Jungee Marcelo has been so patient from the start and it has been a fun process.”
of Mercury’s Nathan Huang temporarily steps out of his frontman duties to release a soulful pop track that expresses his gratitude and love for God. “Fortress,” his first official song as a solo artist, features a smoky, powerful performance and a delicate arrangement designed to connect with the mass audience.
Apart from fronting his alternative rock outfit of Mercury, Huang has always been a firm believer of Christian Music’s purpose in sending an important message to its core following—be it expressing one’s praise and devotion, or connecting people to God in unique ways. “Fortress” bridges his intention with both subtlety and clarity, engaging every part of his being to impart hope and positivity.
Huang co-produced “Fortress” with his former bandmate knōwmaad, deploying his soothing pipes with a sophisticated, modern approach. “I’ve always envisioned of having a Christian song that veers away from the usual Christian Contemporary sound,” says the prolific young artist. “We want something along the lines of Frank Ocean and Daniel Caesar, but not necessarily abandon the genuine message of the lyrics.”

Leah Halili teams up with The Ransom Collective girls on breezy pop track “Clear ToMe”
Filipina singer-songwriter Leah Halili teams up with her fellow The Ransom Collective bandmates Lily and Muriel Gonzales on “Clear To Me,” a dreamy pop tune inspired by her relationship with now-husband, Nikee Banares.
Produced by Carlos Castano, Halili’s new single captures the feeling of romantic affection and how it blooms into something more divine over time. Buoyed by breezy chords and delicate melodies, “Clear To Me” is a beguiling piece of work that was written from the four corners of her bedroom—about the same time her debut single “Fourth of July” was made.
“I pitched this song to my bandmates Lily and Muriel because I knew that I wanted a warm and bright instrumental to add to the song,” says the Fourth of Julyindie pop artist. “With Lily in Indonesia and Muriel in France at the time, it was tricky trying to find the time to record but I’m so grateful to them for effortlessly adding layers of beautiful harmonies to the song. It was enjoyable working with my bandmates again because there’s a level of comfort that I wouldn’t have gotten from anyone else.”
With this particular track, Halili wanted a song that makes listeners feel like they’re in a coming-of-age romantic film, finding light in quiet contentment and earnest love. According to the folk-pop newcomer, “Clear To Me” uplifted her during those times when she missed home the most.
“It was the type of song that each verse and chorus came to me progressively as I was experiencing a totally different life from my life pre-pandemic,” the Halili shares. “Changing jobs, moving from place to place, trying to find myself in a completely different county, there were so many things I needed to adapt to but all the changes made me discover why I fell in-love with music in the first place. It was my safe place. It gave me the freedom to write what I felt and use the melodies in my head to express and relieve me from things around me I had no control over.”
Leah Halili is slated to release a series of volumes soon. She adds, “I want the audience to remember that I’m coming back for more meaningful, beautifully written songs that I hope everyone can relate to somehow.”
“Clear To Me” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide.

Remembering My Why in High School
I found this Programme for one of our school events during our senior year in high school. I graduated from Holy Family School of Quezon City in 2004. Artifacts like this remind me of my humble beginnings and my lifelong love for public speaking and writing, since I also wrote the script for my hosting gig. It always pays to look back and appreciate where it all began. 🖤
