The Craft of Writing
I recently finished my workshop on The Craft of Writing with THE Jessica Zafra. My final writing output can be found here.
I highly recommend her workshop because it taught me the following lessons:
You do not wait for the right mood to write. Just think about what you want to write and go on with your life. Then, sit down and write down what you need to produce.
You write with your own voice. Keep on reading to cultivar what you know and feel.
Writing is a craft that should be a part of your life. Always bring a notebook with you.
Check out Jessica’s website to learn more about her work and upcoming workshops.

Ben&Ben push the mental health discussion forward with “Lunod” music video
The MV is accompanied by an EP release featuring multiple versions of the track, and an exclusive launch of Lunod-themed café
It doesn’t always have to be sink or swim when it comes to mental health.
Ben&Ben chronicle the experience of drowning in torrential distress and anxiety on the music video of their new single “Lunod.” Directed by award-winning filmmaker Jerrold Tarog (Heneral Luna, Sana Dati), the visual narrative pushes the discussion forward with its metaphorical depiction of individuals trying to keep their head above water and find their way out of a dark, harrowing tunnel.
“The music video is a deeply introspective and symbolic interpretation of the song, which is all tied in together from the concept and writing, down to the location,” lead vocalist, guitarist and Lunod chief songwriter Paolo Benjamin explains. “In the video, the song is narrated as the band, with Zild and juan karlos, move deeper and deeper into the tunnel slowly—losing breath, then in the latter half taking powerful strides to move out of it. This signals a ‘rebirth’ into a new, more mature version of the self.”
The cinematic visuals were shot at the El Deposito water reservoir, an underground location known for its historical significance to the events that lead to the Philippine Revolution, Philippine-American War, and World War II.
“Lunod” serves as the band’s reunion project with Jerrold Tarog, who helmed the music video for their 2018 track “Susi,” off the historical epic drama, Goyo: Ang BatangHeneral. “We love collaborating with visionaries in their fields, and so it was a dream working with him,” the acclaimed folk-pop group reveals.
Ahead of the music video release, the nine-piece collective dropped a live acoustic performance of “Lunod” last month. The version, which features collaborators Zildand juan karlos, strips down the bluesy, classic rock arrangements of the original for a more subdued take. The intimate interpretation of the song is part of an exclusive EP release featuring multiple iterations of “Lunod” in various formats, including an extended version of the track.
“The multiple versions for ‘Lunod’ were intended to bring a full listening experience to our listeners; for them to hear what more could be brought out of the song,” Ben&Ben shares in a statement. “We decided to release for streaming the acoustic jam of ‘Lunod,’ the extended version in the music video.”
Aside from the EP, ‘Lunod’ received a remix treatment from hip-hop artist Zelijah, who channeled his struggles with mental health on the production level, and even added a rap verse to convey the mental strains that he went through during the pandemic, and after being diagnosed as bipolar. The “Bipolar remix” of the track gives Zelijah the opportunity to put his own character into the song, and reinterpret it with ethereal sonic elements that blend trap, hip-hop, modern electronica, and rock music genres.
Apart from the ‘Lunod’ EP, Ben&Ben and its label, Sony Music Philippines, recently opened a Lunod-themed café at Latitude Bean+Bar in Malate, Manila as part of Ben&Ben’s Kuwaderno Pop-Up Café activities, which will run from November 25-27. The pop-up café includes aLunod art installation inspired by Zelijah’s Bipolar Remix, as well as other art activities related to mental health.
The Kuwaderno Pop-Up Café features several exclusive activities for Liwanag and ordinary folks to immerse themselves into Ben&Ben’s critically acclaimed album and upcoming digital concert. The two other exclusive pop-ups are located at Jess + Pat’s in Maginhawa, QC, and Kale Café in Fairview, QC.
Music fans can also purchase tickets to Kuwaderno: A Ben&Ben Online Concert directly at the three pop-up locations in Metro Manila. Set to redefine the concert-going experience with the biggest headline concert of their career, Ben&Ben’s upcoming digital concert will be integrating live music performance with multiple creative disciplines such as theatre, dance, orchestra, and technology to create an audio-visual spectacle like no other.
Ben&Ben’s “Lunod,” featuring Zild and juan karlos, is out now on all streaming platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. Watch the music video here.
“Lunod” collaborators Zild and juan karlos are also set to join Ben&Ben on Kuwaderno: A Ben&BenOnline Concert, happening on December 05, 2021(Sun) from 8pm to 11pm. Get your tickets here.

Singapore-based artist Lullaboy on hosting Tokopedia’s WIB Indonesia K-Pop Awards: “This is really happening!”
The acclaimed singer-songwriter is working with Korean producers and songwriters for his upcoming album, Chapters Of You
Lullaboy recently landed one of the biggest gigs of his career as the host for Tokopedia’s WIB Indonesia K-Pop Awards, a star-studded music event that gathers the biggest Hallyu pop artists in the world, including BTS, BLACKPINK, TWICE, NCT DREAM, Stray Kids, aespa, ITZY, THE BOYZ, TREASURE, and SECRET NUMBER.
The Singapore-based musician specifically auditioned for the part, and was luckily chosen as the host for the prestigious awards show, which streamed live on November 25, 2021 from 7pm onwards via Indonesian channels RCTI and SCTV, Tokopedia Play, and Tokopedia’s official YouTube channel.
“I actually sent my portfolio to the directors,” the Singaporean-Indonesian singer-songwriter shares. “I had to audition twice, and I didn’t expect to get the part at all. A few weeks later, I got a call and I literally could not speak for about 10 seconds. Then the ‘oh my gosh’s’ began overflowing.”
Lullaboy considers WIB Indonesia K-Pop Awards as the biggest production that he’s ever been part of, and is grateful to be in a program that is watched by millions of people from all around the world. “The staff, the equipment, the guests and the sheer influence of the show just blew me away,” says Lullaboy. “Fortunately, all of my experience in the entertainment industry helped me just do my best without nerves getting in the way. For me, the most memorable were the moments in between takes where you think to yourself: wow, this is really happening!”
Prior to his stint at Tokopedia’s WIB Indonesia K-Pop Awards, Lullaboy was in South Korea to perform at Let’s Play Hongdae, where he was the sole Singaporean-Indonesian artist invited to play at the main stage, along with Korean megastars and acclaimed international acts.
“These were two of the main reasons I officially flew to Korea for,” he explains. “I even went through 2 weeks of hotel quarantine for them. Let’s Play Hongdae was the first ever music festival I've ever played at. Fortunately, I had an epic band, and although my Korean isn’t too great and English wasn’t their first language, we communicated through our love for music and performing, I gotta give it up for music legend Danny Jung for putting the band together for me.”
Lullaboy was also invited as a celebrity guest for Good Friends, a Korean TV show that aired on SBS Plus and on YouTube. During his 3-episode stint at the popular reality and game show, he was able to experience the world-class Paradise City Resort, the beautiful Jangbong Island, and get to dance with K-Pop stars Wei.
At present time, the Singapore-based multihyphenate is working on his new album, Chapters of You, to be released early next year. The 12-track record chronicles the different sides and facets of love, in all its complicated gloriousness. As the Gone Too Long singer-songwriter puts it, “Every song tells a different story and I hope that my listeners find comfort in relating to them. No matter what you’re going through, I’m sure there’s at least one song in there that you can call your own.”
In an official statement, Lullaboy also revealed that he’s currently undergoing writing and production sessions with some of the finest people behind the Korean music industry, including producers and songwriters working with YG, JYP and SM. To date, Lullaboy is one of the most-streamed English-language artists in Singapore, with more than 18 million streams and 1.5 million monthly listenerson Spotify alone. His single “Someone Like You” gathered traction all over Southeast Asia, particularly in his home country, Indonesia and Singapore.

Your Place Next Year Book Review
Mina V. Esguerra has released another modern romance story that satisfies the pandemic-fatigued reader. Your Place Next Year is a romance novelette that is set in a not so distant future where the world is slowly easing its way into a more “normal” status quo. The book features protagonists who are both in their early forties and are well-established in their careers.
Alia is a female country director who spends one week a year at sunny La Union. She does so to escape the demands of work and city life. She is annually involved with Leandro, an equally successful education tech CEO who chose the surfing destination as his permanent address. When a post-lockdown work encounter in Manila forces Alia and Leandro to face each other outside of their beach trysts, they are led to explore the idea of something beyond their annual hookups.
I enjoyed reading this novelette because of the smart banter between Alia and Leandro. Both of them have their own careers and have made bold lifestyle choices. I could relate to Alia because she bought a townhouse in Antipolo. While I may not live on a mountain at suburbia, I still consider my Quezon City townhouse to be strategically distant from the business districts that I used to work at. The pandemic has forced me to move my freelance career at home, and Alia’s working style of separating “laptop work” from “smartphone work” is something that I also practice. I am also the type who asks hard questions to the men I date, so just like Alia, I expect nothing less from the man I am seeing.
I appreciate how Leandro always asks for Alia’s consent before going further. I like how he shows sensitivity when faced with the possibility of losing Alia. I also like how in the duration of the story, both characters have developed from hookup lovers to a committed couple. The value of compromise is highlighted here. it is especially relevant today. Many people have moved back to the province or away from the city to have better mental health. Relationships will surely take a more dynamic turn once we move to a more “normal” way of life, and it is important for couples to know that compromise is key to making everything work,
I recommend this book for people my age (I am thirty-five) and older! It is refreshing to read a story about people who are done with “adulting” and are transitioning to a more comfortable way of advance careers and lifestyle choices. Your Place Next Year is the novelette that romance readers need this year and in a post-pandemic 2022.

R Rules delivers a rousing message of empowerment on debut single “DNY”
Listen here: http://rrules.lnk.to/DNY
R Rules champions of women empowerment on their debut single “DNY”—out today via MCA Music Inc.
With its propulsive beats and hip-hop swagger, the Pinay quartet shows unwavering commitment to inspire young music listeners to stand up for what they believe in andencourage them to find their inner strength to go after what they want.
The song, which literally means “Don’t Need Ya,” puts a refreshing spin on empowerment anthems while taking into consideration the values, perspectives, and views of R Rules as individuals and as a collective. Aside from using their platform to inspire change and lift each other up, the Filipino girl group also shares that their latest track promotes love and kindness in any way or form, be it for your own self and for others who need it.
“DNY” is co-written by Kevin Yadao and Tiny Corpuz, and co-produced by Cursebox and Corpuz, with the goal to speak out against the impossible standards imposed to women and articulate the challenges that they go through towards claiming their space and earning respect.
With its masterful blend of music influences that range from hip-hop/R&B to K-Pop, EDM to top 40 music, “Don’t Need Ya” signals R Rules’ impressive pivot to diverse and eclectic modern sounds.
As R Rules’ maiden offering, it succeeds in translating their magnetic confidence into an astounding piece of work that sounds at par with contemporary global music trends but remains representative of their unique vision as artists. “Our plan right now, is just to get our music out there,” says the hound of alpha female swag. “We’re not here to compete. We just want to carve out a space for our empowering brand of pop music, and hopefully be taken seriously for who we are as a group.”
R Rules’ “DNY” is out now on streaming platforms worldwide via MCA Music Inc. Watch the music video here.
About R Rules
The story of R Rules is a story of how four women from two cultural backgrounds came together to become pop performers, working hard on their craft and finding ways to delight their audience. R Rules (formerly known as JaphDolls) are composed of RIYO, RURI, REINA, RISA—all four of them, fluent in Filipino, English, and Japanese and are currently undergoing de rigeur trainee development program to hone their skills. The girls are now set to make an impact on the Philippine pop scene and, hopefully, the global music market.
Learning to sing like the musical pros
Reina grew up in Japan but is now based in Manila City. She hails from Tokyo and moved to the Philippines when she turned 19. Her mother is Filipina, and Reina recalls her mother’s musical tastes as being an inspiration. She wanted to sing like her mother’s favorite singers, who always hit the high notes and had powerful voices. When she had the chance, she moved to her mother’s homeland to pursue musical training.
Reina hopes that people will appreciate her story of how she moved to a place that was unfamiliar to her and had memorable experiences because of it. When we asked about her favorite singers, one of them, Ariana Grande, stood out. Reina says that Grande’s distinctive voice inspired her to aim for the same goal. She wants to collaborate with the YG Entertainment Group in South Korea, the people who are behind another group of artists she admires, Blackpink.
Trying it out and eventually enjoying the ride
Risa grew up in the Philippines as a person with two cultures. When she was finishing high school, she wanted to move to Japan for college because of a desire to explore her Japanese culture.
Risa’s musical tastes lean toward pop. What stood out for us, though, was her fondness for Scott Bradlee’sPostmodern Jukebox project, where Bradlee and his bandmates reimagine contemporary pop music through different and older genres. She says that she can still reminisce about pop songs she likes but appreciate how they put a twist on it.
What Risa wants people to get from her story is how she wants us to value the people we love. Her story of loss and finding comfort and care in others is something that people can connect with.
Wanting to sing about what dreams are made of
Riyo grew up in Japan, where she finished high school. When she was six years old, she recalls that she wanted to be the pop singer Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus’s lead character from the Disney Channel show of the same name. She was often bullied at school, she also recalls. She had family problems since she was young when her parents divorced. Even if she sometimes wanted to give up, she kept on going. Her journey led her to Manila, where she also ended up being in a group.
Riyo was a tuba player in her junior high school band. She says that it was easy to master the tuba because it didn’t require reading chords, which was complicated for her. If it weren’t for her being signed to an acting agency, she would have continued being in her school’s music club. Her dream is to perform at the Met Gala someday. The annual event at the Metropolitan Museum of New York brings together fashion, music, and visual arts, and has become known for attendees in often flamboyant costumes. She wants her group to be there in outlandish costumes and prove to be the best!
Being part of a new musical family
Ruri, who also calls herself ARU or R. Performing was part of her life ever since she was young, and she joined singing contests of all sorts. She wants to grow as a performer, learning instruments like the guitar and the drums.
Ruri wants people to appreciate her story of being an independent woman who uses her talent to achieve her dreams. She connected with her Japanese girl groupquickly because they share the same sense of humor and a deep understanding of each other. She says of her and her fellow R Rules members, “We are not just a girl group, we are sisters.”
Coming together to make music
R Rules marks the second time that our four singers have gotten together to make music. They were about to give up until they were given a bigger opportunity to work together. The group says that they have been giving 100% of their effort to working together, so they decided to give music one last shot. They don’t want to have any regrets later by doing this.
The women of R Rules hope to show that people from two different cultures can perform together in perfect harmony, not just musical. One group they all admire in common is the K-pop act Blackpink. The Korean girl group, they say, has a distinct aura and confidence they bring to performing. The group also appreciates how Blackpink’smembers work hard and dedicate themselves to their craft.
R Rules’s short-term goals are to improve their singing and dancing. They also want to showcase their own material in the process of that musical growth. As for their long-term goals, they hope to become well-known internationally and perform in big festivals like Coachella, where people like Beyoncé have given very memorable sets.
R Rules wants people to be inspired and energized by their music. Most of all, they want us to believe in ourselves, and be strong enough to achieve whatever we want. This group of young performers is truly one to watch out for, not just for their talent, but for the stories they want to tell. We look forward to finding out what they have to offer.

Prostate cancer 9th highest in numberof cancer-related deaths among Filipino males
PUA, DOH, Cancer Warriors Foundation, PSUO and J&J lead fight against prostate cancer
November 2021 – Prostate cancer is one of the top 5 cancers in the Philippines and the ninth highest in number of cancer-related deaths among Filipino males according to GLOBOCAN. Despite the statistics, awareness on the disease is very low.
The Philippine Urological Association (PUA), together with the Department of Health (DOH), Cancer Warriors Foundation, Inc., the Philippine Society of Uro-Oncologists (PSUO), and Johnson and Johnson (Philippines), Inc., led the observance of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with a series of activities that aimed to generate greater awareness for the disease. With the unified theme Prostate Cancer Sama-Samang Labanan, Tamang Impormasyon Kailangan, efforts were focused on educating the public on the importance of early detection and treatment to slow the progression of prostate cancer.
A lay forum entitled Usapang Prostate Cancer was live streamed via the PUA Prostate Cancer Awareness Facebook page on September 11 to underline truths about the disease. Representatives from the the Department of Health Cancer Control Division and Cancer Warriors Foundation, Inc. also joined the discussion to share what support the government and privately funded organizations can provide patients and their families. This was followed by free teleconsultations by members of the Philippine Urological Association and the Philippine Urology Residents Association last September 18. More than 300 Filipino males signed up for the free teleconsultation service.
Fighting prostate cancer with information
Awareness on prostate cancer is very low as men do not talk about it in the open and often confuse its early symptoms as signs of aging. These include frequent urination, a weak urine stream, and pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvis. The only bigger warning signs are blood in the urine or semen and pain or burning sensation when urinating.
The risk of prostate cancer increases with age, especially after 50. It can also run in the family, developed through a combination of genes and poor lifestyle. There is no proven prevention strategy for prostate cancer, which is why early diagnosis is important.
“Information is the most important weapon against prostate cancer,” said Dr. Clarito Cairo, program manager of the National Integrated Cancer Control Program, Disease Prevention and Control Bureau of the Department of Health. “The more people know about its early symptoms, the earlier they can get screened. Even in advanced stages, there are treatments available that still allow patients to live a long life.”
“While mostly indolent, prostate cancer needs to be addressed immediately to stop the cancer cells from spreading to other areas of the body,” explained Dr. Ernesto Gerial, president of the Philippine Urological Association. “Disseminating information about who are at risk of the disease and what its symptoms are can save many lives.”
He added: “The lack of noise around prostate cancer has resulted to unequal support for the disease as compared to breast and cervical cancer. While we at the Philippine Urological Association have been hard at work for many years for prostate cancer to finally take the spotlight, we know that we cannot do it alone. That is why we are happy to be partnering with other medical associations, the government, and Johnson & Johnson in creating greater awareness for the disease and extending help to patients.”
“There is hope in prostate cancer,” said Dr. Erwin Benedicto, head of Medical Affairs of Johnson & Johnson’s (Philippines), Inc. “It is a hard fact that most people should know but don’t—not yet.”
“Doctors are our partners in maintaining good health. Supporting them in the fight against prostate cancer is crucial, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic posing several limitations. By working together, information, proper diagnosis, and appropriate treatment for the disease can be made available for all.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:The Secret Sauce to a Better Workplace
A work environment where you can be open, proud, and out.
Employees that thrive in their professional environment directly contribute to the success of a company—and it isthese three workplace characteristics that are key to achieving that goal, says leading multinational corporation Johnson & Johnson (Philippines), Inc. (J&J Philippines), an organization that has been consistently recognized for its inclusive workplace philosophy across its commercial and Global Services teams in the country.
When J&J Philippines won HR Asia’s Best Companies to Work for in Asia Award in 2018, 2019 and 2020, and earned a place at the Asia CEO Awards’ Center of Excellence for Diversity & Inclusion in 2019, the company’s active and sincere role in driving Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) was cited as animportant driver alongside employee programs to help navigate the pandemic’s effect on the workforce, its strong wellness culture, and efforts to integrate work and family life successfully.
According to J&J Philippines DEI Council head and Asia Pacific head of Total Rewards Mary Grace Gervacio, the key to their consistent success and recognition as an ideal employer is their focus on bringing to life the employee-focused statement in Johnson & Johnson’s Credo, the company’s corporate code that governs the way they work.
“Our Credo is our moral compass to guide us in doing what is right for the people we serve and that includes our own employees. Since my early days in HR at J&J, a clear mandate had been impressed upon me – to bring the Credo to life, engaging employees, and encouraging them to find out what it could mean for them. We follow this purpose as we evolve our employee programs and as we build a strong total health culture within the company, and in sincere efforts to advance Diversity, Equity & Inclusion across the J&J community,” says Grace Gervacio.
Related to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in particular, the Credo states that: “we must provide an inclusive work environment where each person must be considered as an individual. We must respect their diversity and dignity and recognize their merit. They must have a sense of security, fulfilment and purpose in their jobs.”
Over the last few years, J&J has been proactively developingEmployee Resource Groups or ERGs such as Women’s Leadership and Inclusion, Generation Now, Alliance for Diverse Abilities, and Open & Out that are advancing the J&J culture of inclusion and innovation, enhancing business performance and reputation, and building a diverse workforce for the future.
Open & Out, in particular, began its story in the Philippines in 2018 in a roomful of open-minded people who took a chance to go out and make a difference. They introduced themselves to each other beginning with the words “I identify as...”.
And the rest, as they say, is history. Through a beautiful launch campaign where they used the hashtag #ProudAko (I am proud), O&O empowered employees to share their journey as a LGBTQ+ member. In June 2019, a combined headcount of 150 LGBTQ+ and allies held their first-ever J&J Manila campus Pride March to celebrate employees of distinct sexual orientation and gender background. To cap the colourful celebration, the Rainbow flag was raised alongside the Philippine flag for the first time in the company’s then 63-year history in the country.
Beyond these ERGs, however, are sustainable employee programs and policies that comprehensively and sustainably incorporate Diversity and Inclusion into the company’s culture. These include:
● Mandatory “managing unconscious bias” training
● Company-supported employee groups championingwomen leadership, generational diversity, the LGBTQ+community, and persons with disabilities
● Ensuring gender balance in leadership roles (women in atleast 50% of leadership roles)
● Mentorship programs for female and early-career talents
● Partnership with universities to expose young talents to J&J careers
● Gender-neutral restrooms
● Employee benefits that cover same sex partners
● Mental Health coverage through its health insurance plan and Employee Assistance Program
● Programs and policies for the advancement of women in the workplace, e.g. on-site child care center, lactation rooms
“The DE&I agenda has always been a key priority of the global J&J organization,” says Raghu Krishnan, president and managing director of J&J Philippines. “Through our mission—to allow our employees to be themselves—we are encouraging them to see the workplace as a safe space, where they can be their authentic selves without fear of bias and discrimination.”

My Happiest Day
My happiest day was when my first book, Speak Blog Live, was released. It was on October 7, 2021, when I finally realized my lifelong dream of becoming a published author. I had no expectations, other than to set my book free into the wild.
I celebrated with a cake that had my ISBN on it and my family with me. My partner and editor, Lorenz, spent the day with me. Since the pandemic was still raging on, we opted to stay at my house to talk about publishing the book with my mother. It was a lovely day.
When I became an author, I realized that it was possible to make my dreams come true. I did not need to do big, risky things in order to prove to myself that I can do it. It was not easy to become an author, but it was possible after sacrificing my time and putting in the effort to write a book. At the end of the day, my book was finished. It was ready to be read by the world.
When I will think of this day in the future, I will remember the exhilaration of becoming a published author. I will also recall all the hard work that got me here. To buy a copy of my book, please click here. I hope that you will support my dream by buying a copy.
SINGAPORE SINGER-SONGWRITER JEAN TAN DROPSCHILL R&B SINGLE ‘WHEN IT’S TIME’A SONG FOR THE SEASON
Singapore singer-songwriter Jean Tan releases ‘When It’s Time’, a perfect song for the season of waiting. Available on 19 November 2021 on all major digital streaming platforms via LEEWAY, this track features production by sought-after Singaporean music director and producer Evanturetime (Evan Low) and electric guitar by guitar extraordinaire Leo Goh.
Written in the blossoming stages of a relationship, the song is essentially about being in the period of nervous waiting, between the fluttering of beginnings and the certainty of something more. In a way, it speaks to the universal yearning for resolution and clarity, especially in today’s climate. The song asks the questions: Can there be value, even in the waiting? How do you cherish the present without losing yourself in alonging for ‘something more’?
“Feel alive, yet somewhat dead
Caught between a passion and fear,
‘Cause I don’t know
But I know that when it’s time
The hills will run alive and dance
Songs will grow on leaves of green”
While the instrumentation is simple, the soundscape is lush and sweet, bringing together the chill R&B and jazz genres—think Kehlani meets H.E.R., or SZA meets Corrine Bailey Rae. The song starts with a strong, bluesy instrumental hook carried smoothly by electric guitar, accompanied by a bass line that locks in the groove. Together with the velvety tones of the electric piano and the sharp click of a faraway snare, the arrangement is a soothing balm for those biding their time away.
Full of soulful longing, ‘When It’s Time’ speaks to the season all of us are in and reassures us that there is still joy to be found in the process. Beyond that, it enheartens us to wait a little longer... because, just like gifts unwrapped on a Christmas morning – good things are worth the wait.

Lyrics of When it’s Time
A fire wakes; dam breaks
Those troubling words that mustn’t be said
Feel alive yet somewhat dead
Caught between a passion and a fear,
‘Cause I don’t know –
But I know that when it’s time
The hills will run alive and dance
Songs will grow on leaves of green
And I know that when it’s time
Words take their shape and bloom
Longing in their buds
And I’ll know, I’ll know
When it’s time
Soothe the tears, bind the heart
Must hold it well, keep my smile on
Don’t want to hang on your every word
Every silent space that amplifies my beating heart
Oh I know that when it’s time
It’ll be clear for us to see
The waves will part for you and me
And I know that when it’s time
Love will shine like stars in skies
Promise in their eyes
And I’ll know, I’ll know
When it’s time
Oh I know that when it’s time
It’ll be clear for us to see
The waves will part for you and me
And I know that when it’s time
Love will shine like stars in skies
Promise in their eyes
And I’ll know, I’ll know
When it’s time

The Craft of Writing Exercise 4
You should have ordered another beer. So what if people judge you for drinking when you know that you do so in moderation? So what if you laugh out loud and wear the clothes that make you feel pretty? So what if you have better things than your cousins? So what if your Titas think that you should be married by now or that you should wear nail polish and makeup? What you do is none of their business. Stop overthinking. You are already too tired as it is. Someday, there will be a time when a pandemic will force you to stay home and do everything at home. You will have less work but more time for your music, crafts, and writing. Write your books. Post your song covers. Send your gifts to frontliners. Give blood, then get your piercing and tattoos. You should live life with no regrets.
As you know, cancer runs in the family. While your recent checkup has confirmed that you are in your best health condition so far, you should live life to the fullest because it is still too short. Workout like you always do. Eat healthy and lessen those street food binges. Have a beer, but eat a salad too. It’s all about balance.
Your life is your own. Do not listen to people who limit your beliefs. Nothing’s gonna change your world. And since you enjoyed writing your last book, why don’t you write another one? Your story is still being written. Now go drink that beer. Cheers!

I ordered a palette from local ceramic artist Maria Ceramika, and I received a trinket dish as well! I was still a newbie blogger when I first met Aileen, the ceramicist behind this thriving brand. I got hooked after I bought two pairs of ceramic earrings from her, and we have kept in touch since then.

Israeli Ambassador Sees Expansion of Israel-PH relations
Ambassador Ilan Fluss revealed the flourishing relations between Israel and the Philippines in the fields of economy, agriculture, tourism, defense, among others during the Pandesal Forum held in Kamuning Bakery. The Israeli Ambassador also emphasized that he envisions expanding the cooperation between the two countries focusing on innovation and technology.
“Israel is a global hub of innovation and technology. We want to share our know-how with Filipinos and to work together in maximizing their potential while using smart and innovative Israeli technology adjusted to local conditions,” Ambassador Fluss said.
Israel is known as the start-up nation with leading companies in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, water technology, and more. The embassy plans to feature and introduce more of these in the Philippines.
He specifically mentioned the agriculture sector, which will benefit more in using Israeli innovation. “I recently visited Tarlac State University and I saw the impressive and successful display of the adoption of Israeli smart technology in the province,” he said.
Israel and the Philippines have existing cooperation in the agriculture field. “Every year, Filipino students train in Israel for 11 months to practice smart agriculture,” Ambassador Fluss said. “Israel offers advanced technologies and innovation in farming that it aims to share with the Philippines to contribute to its goal of attaining sustainability and food sufficiency in the country while addressing climate change,” he added.
MASHAV is Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation. Filipinos in various fields were trained in Israel to further their skills in the areas of agriculture, water management, public health, entrepreneurship, innovation, among others.
“The historic visit of President Rodrigo Duterte in Israel in 2018 gave a boost to the relations of our countries. He was the first Philippine president to visit our country,” Ambassador Fluss said.
Ambassador Fluss described the relationship of Israel-PH as a multi-layer partnership. “Cultural activities bring people together. We want to feature and expose more Israeli culture to Filipinos,” he said. He mentioned the first Hebrew to Filipino translation of the Etgar Keret book and the Israeli Film Festival this November as few examples of the embassy’s cultural activities.
“The highlight of the film festival is the documentary of ‘Kuya Noy’ which features the OFW life of a Filipino rock band member Asin. It is important for us to know stories like this since Filipinos are an integral part of our society,” Ambassador Fluss explained.
There are around 30,000 Filipino caregivers in Israel. Their rights are protected with the bilateral labor agreement between the two governments. They are an integral part of the Israeli society. “My father-in-law has a Filipina caregiver. Our family appreciates her care and dedication,” he shared.
In the middle of the pandemic, Israel assisted the Philippines by bringing two delegations of medical experts to the Philippines. The first group shared the Israeli experience in vaccination drive campaigns and the other one shared their knowledge on efficient infection control protocols and hospital management.
Ambassador Ilan Fluss considers himself as a “diplomat balikbayan.” “I was fortunate enough to experience this great and beautiful country, its culture, and its people as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Israeli Embassy in Manila in 1995. I am delighted to be back to close the circle, this time as the Israeli Ambassador,” he said.
Ambassador Fluss encouraged Filipinos to come visit Israel. “Vaccinated Filipinos can now visit the Holy Land, Old City Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Beit Shemesh,” he recommended.
Philippine Airlines is aiming to start direct flights to Israel by April next year. This is expected to boost the tourism, economy, and people-to-people relations between Israel and the Philippines. Filipinos are entitled to free visa access to Israel for 90 days.
“Israeli backpackers are excited to visit the Philippines. We are optimistic of the signs of your country opening up and recovering from the economic crisis due to the pandemic. We hope that the tourism industry will bounce back stronger soon,” he said.
Ambassador Fluss also wished good luck to Miss Universe Philippines Beatrice Gomez as she competed in the Miss Universe pageant to be held in December in Eilat, Israel.
The Pandesal Forum was moderated by Mr. Wilson Lee Flores at Kamuning Bakery, an 82-year-old bakery. The famous Filipino pandesal and Israeli challah breads were featured during the forum held on November 18 to signify the friendly relations of Israel and the Philippines.
