Tamago Sando PH

I had a lovely snack earlier, as I had Tamago Sando PH’s Tamago Original (Php190) sandwich. Inspired by the sandwiches in Japanese konbini or convenience stores, their take on the classic snack is spot-on. It is filling and tasty. It is worth the delivery charge from Makati to QC as my family definitely enjoyed our orders.

dia maté teams up with IV of Spades’ Blaster Silonga on new single “Dream”

Promising newcomer dia maté dials down the R&B melodrama for a luscious summertime tune that is built around laid-back melodies, indie-pop influences, and tropical-sounding rhythms.

Written by mate herself and produced by IV of Spades’ Blaster Silonga, “Dream” explores the hesitation of commitment and moving forward despite falling in love with someone. According to the 19-year-old artist, the song was inspired by how people sometimes close themselves off subconsciously to protect their heart from the trauma induced by past relationships. “That’s what ultimately holds us back: the fear of being let down again,” the young singer-songwriter says. “Dream essentially describes wanting to wake up from the past, to pretend it was only a dream.”

Upbeat melancholia

dia maté originally penned and produced the demo for “Dream” on guitar, but the rising pop/R&B star eventually wanted to revamp the track with a more upbeat and energetic vibe to complement the melancholic appeal of her lyrics. That’s where Blaster Silonga and Sam Marquez from One Click Straight came in as producer and sound engineer respectively, bringing the vision to life with charismatic flair that reflects maté’s personal branding.

“It started through zoom meetings with Blaster and text exchanges back and forth to discuss what we were going for production-wise,” the Island Records recording star shares in a statement. “Thankfully, we had the same vibe in mind: a more indie-pop/band type production. Blaster also had other great ideas so we rode along with that. Sadly. due to the situation now, we couldn’t meet up to record the song so I recorded all of the vocals in my room. After that, he sent the song to be mixed and mastered by Sam.”

H&M Summer Campaign

“Dream” is currently making rounds as a featured song on H&M’s Summer Campaign and as part of the “Best of H&M Philippines Store” playlist. Mate shares, “It feels surreal, really. The wonderful team at Island got me this collaboration and for that I am so grateful. I’m so happy that I was able to create a song that perfectly fit the summer vibe they were looking for.”

dia maté also reminisced about her childhood, walking into an H&M store and wanting to buy everything in sight. “H&M was always one of the first shops I’d walk into at the mall. In regards to style and values, H&M aligns perfectly with mine. I’m happy that I can shop sustainably and know that I’m paying for good quality.”

Ben&Ben paint breathtaking imagery of young love on new single “Upuan”

It’s official: Ben&Ben have finally released “Upuan,” the first single off their upcoming sophomore album to be released under Sony Music.

Written in 2019, in Dumaguete upon arrival at the hotel after one of their shows, their new song takes a nostalgic look on young love, and as Ben&Ben describe it, “the palpable romantic tension that arises from friendships that are formed by sitting next to each other, and the adventurous conversations that ensue.”

Lyrically, “Upuan” draws breathtaking imagery that interprets gestures in such lifelike ways, capturing a play of details with romantic earnestness. The band points out, “we incorporated a more visual style in the song, painting a picture for the listener and transporting them to that familiar place, of falling in love with someone they just met, whether that is in a classroom, by the beach, at a restaurant.”

It helps that they’re painting a picture in the listener’s head with ethereal arrangements and soaring choruses that swirl beautifully against a backdrop of naturalist setting: samples of birds singing, the swoosh of the waves, and even the conversation of the trees. There is magic in the way Ben&Ben fuse all these elements together to create a cinematic landscape punctuated by poetry and inventiveness. It’s effortlessly picturesque, while employing a level of commitment to make the audience feel like they’re part of the experience, as if tapping into something personal and is of utmost importance to their being.

In a joint statement, the nine-piece collective said that the music of “Upuan” was conceived during a random jamming session with no prior agenda as to how it would sound. “But to our surprise, that first jamming brought about the soul of how Upuan sounds now. The earthy, ethereal soundscapes, and that sense of sonic adventure came from the fact that we just moved in together, and being in a new place surrounded with summer vibes and nature elements, helped shape our expression of our new song. We feel very blessed to be close to nature in this season and it’s almost like a tribute to their beauty that we included them in the song.”

Written and produced by Ben&Ben, co-produced/mixed by Jean Paul Verona, and mastered by Leon Zervos, “Upuan” was recorded in the band’s home studio. Verona and sound engineer Sam Marquez helped in the recording process, giving the song its final touches.

The acclaimed hitmakers are also currently working on their second album. “Since the production of this song, we're continuously working on all the other songs that will complete it. We're really pushing forward in terms of experimentation and diversity of sound in the songs.”

Ben&Ben’s “Upuan” is out now on all streaming platforms worldwide via Sony Music.

Lacey Scarf

I recently finished crocheting this lacey scarf. I followed the Crochet Easy Shawl pattern by GG Crochet. I used fine cotton yarn by Miss Crochet a Lot, and a 4.5mm hook.

This was a therapeutic project over the second Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) period. Having a rise in the Covid-19 patients in my country has been a source of anxiety, so this project helped me stay calm and on track. It also inspired me to stay focused as the pattern is only a two-row repeat.

This simple yet beautiful pattern inspired me to do more during this difficult period. I joined webinars again to educate myself, and it reminded me of how much I love learning. It has also cleared my mind from the difficult news stories at the moment. I focused on the hypnotic pattern, and it kept me going until I finished the scarf.

If you are also feeling down at times, find fulfillment in the hobbies that keep you sane. Focus on what you can do and don’t feel discouraged by factors beyond your control. If you also crochet, just keep on hooking!

Let us all create a better present by being present. God bless us all!

Chen Pangan is poised for crossover breakthrough with the release of debut single ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’

Chen Pangan PR Photo 1.jpeg

Filipina singer-songwriter Chen deserves to be someone to keep an eye on this year. As the lead guitarist and one of the vocalists of Unit 406, the rising pop sensation has enjoyed a bit of success with decent-sized hits such as 'Kahit Na Anong Sabihin Ng Iba' and 'Tanghaling Tapat,’ which eventually earned her band a nomination for Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist at the 2018 Awit Awards.

This year, Chen is poised to take on a new role as a solo artist with the release of her debut single, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ under MCA Music Inc.

Delivered with soulful, emotive vocals and heartfelt songwriting style, the song dips into stripped-down pop territory before its colossal reveal in the chorus. “Nangangarap kung maibabalik sasimula lahat / uulitin ko, ‘di nagsisisi sa iyo,” she sings as if coming from a place of immense longing and grief.

According to Chen, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ is a song that speaks of one’s yearning for love. “It's about loving someone without being loved back and eventually accepting reality and choosing to let go,” says the talented newcomer. “And it’s also about deciding to turn the page and move forward.”

Chen explains that the recording process behind ‘Sana’y AlamMo’ went smooth despite the challenges of having to internalize the emotional component of the lyrics, while allowing herself to feel its pain. “The experience working with Gab and Tiny was super chill and fun,” Chen shares. “There was never a time that we had to unplug or revise. Everything just flowed very well.” ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ was composed, arranged, and produced by Gabriel Tagadtad, with additional production by Tiny Corpuz.

At present, Chen is busy exploring her creative potential with and beyond her band, Unit 406. She’s confident with the kind of music that she wants to dabble into, and as showcased in her first solo single, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo,’ the much-buzzed star is more than ready to take any challenges that will come her way. “What separates me from other artists is the tone and personality my music brings,” she tells in a statement. “In contrast to hugotsongs, ‘Sana'y Alam Mo’ has this R&B flare that is snappier than your typical love songs. It’s not as soft and gentle, but it’s very raw and true to its message of love being bittersweet.

Chen’s ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ is out now on all streaming platforms.
