Global Girl Group XG Achieves First Ever Billboard 200 Chart Entry with Latest EP AWE

Global girl group XG has debuted at number 175 on the Billboard 200 chart with their latest mini-album, AWE! This achievement marks their first-ever entry on the chart, solidifying their status as a rising force in the global music scene. AWE also claimed the top spot on the Heatseekers Albums chart, further showcasing the group's growing impact worldwide. For Japanese artists, this is a significant milestone, following Joe Hisaishi and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's A Symphonic Celebration - Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki in 2023. XG is also the first Japanese girl group to make the list since BABYMETAL’s METAL GALAXY in 2019. Their success with AWE follows the historic achievement of their song “GRL GVNG,” which ranked No. 1 on the Hot Trending Songs Powered by Twitter chart, making them the first Japanese artist to top the weekly chart in the US.


Their second mini-album, AWE, was released in Japan on November 8 and in the US on December 6. It debuted at No. 3 on both the Oricon Weekly Album Chart and the Billboard Japan Hot Albums chart. Internationally, the album climbed to No. 12 on the Apple Music Worldwide Album Chart (Daily), entered the Top 200 in 48 countries and regions, and reached No. 2 on the iTunes Top 100 Pop Albums (Worldwide). The music video for the lead single “HOWLING” also trended on YouTube in 10 countries, and XG made history as the first Japanese female artist to enter the US Billboard Rap Digital Song Sales chart, further cementing their growing global presence.


This year, XG embarked on their first world tour, The First HOWL, performing 29 shows across 26 cities worldwide. The tour drew an impressive audience of approximately 200,000 fans, with 120,000 in Asia, 50,000 in North America, and 30,000 in the UK and Europe—a remarkable accomplishment for a Japanese artist. The momentum continues with additional performances in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka), and into 2025 with shows in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne) in February, along with plans for a South American tour.

Adding to their achievements, XG was recently announced to perform at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They will be the only Japanese artist on the lineup and the first Japanese female artist to secure the second headliner spot, just below the main headliner, creating significant buzz in the global music industry.

Regina Song to Bring “Fangirl: The Tour” to Manila next month

Singapore-based singer-songwriter Regina Song is set to make her highly anticipated Philippine debut with Fangirl: The Tour next month. The tour, which includes stops in key Southeast Asian cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Manila, will showcase her dynamic blend of melodic guitar-pop sensibilities and infectious songwriting.

Regina’s Fangirl: Live in Manila performances will take place across two venues. The first, an intimate solo acoustic set, will be held at Jess&Pat’s in Quezon City on January 24. The following evening, January 25, she will perform with her full band at Sari-Sari Cocktails in MakatiCity, featuring a stellar lineup of guest acts, including dwta, syd hartha, Muri, and Clara Benin.

Barbie Almalbis to launch fifth studio album, Not That Girl next month

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Award-winning singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis is set to release her highly anticipated fifth studio album, Not That Girl, on Friday, January 10, 2024, on all major digital platforms worldwide.

 

The upcoming album marks a personal chapter in Almalbis’ lifeand career as she openly discussed her mental and emotional health journey through music. The songs explore themes of healing, resilience, and self-discovery, breaking the silence around the stigma often associated with depression.

 

As part of the album’s launch, Almalbis will take the stage for an exclusive live performance on the same day of the release at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati City. The intimate event will feature a long set that includes both fan favorites and new tracks from Not That Girl. Joining Almalbis for the special celebration are some of the Philippines’ most exciting musicians: Kai del Rio, .bird, Twin Lobster, and JohnoyDanao.

 

A few hours ago, Almalbis shared a vulnerable reflection on her experience with depression, emphasizing the importance of support and self-expression. In an Instagram post, she wrote:

“But through it all, I was never really alone. I had the support of people who prayed for me, listened to me, loved me, and continually reminded me to remain in God. Their presence was a lifeline. In the midst of the pain, my friends encouraged me to write. And so, I did. The songs came so naturally, almost effortlessly. I was reminded of the days when I was a teenager, overwhelmed by emotions, and the only way I could process them was to pour them into my writing. It felt like I was reconnecting with something deep within me.”

 

Almalbis went on to describe the process of collaborating with producer Nick Lazaro, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of Not That Girl. “Making songs with my friend and producer, Nick Lazaro, was also a visceral experience. The plan was to make just one song, but a few months later, we had completed an entire album. Finishing it felt like closing a chapter, but in many ways, it also marked the beginning of something new. While this past year has been incredibly difficult, I’ve come to realize that the pruning I experienced was for a purpose. I’m learning, growing, and trusting in the new chapter God has planned,” Almalbis said.

 

The album’s pre-release singles, including “Desperate Hours,”“Homeostasis,” and “Happy Sad,” have already offered a taste of what’s to come. These tracks showcase a more experimental, playful side of Almalbis’ music, yet retain the emotional depth and vulnerability that has defined her discography.

MONA releases debut EP Love, MONA: a modern take on love letters

Filipino recording star MONA has officially released her highly anticipated debut EP, Love, MONA,

Available now via Sony Music Entertainment, the 5-trackrelease serves as a collection of love letters in the form of songs. Inspired by the tradition of exchanging handwritten letters in the ‘90s, MONA channels this intimate and personal expression of emotion into her distinct brand of storytelling.

“I was born in the ’90s and I experienced those handwritten letters, and I kind of miss it,” shares Mona Gonzales, the artist behind the moniker MONA. “Now, people rarely do that as we live in a digital world and everything is online.” 

At its core, Love, MONA tackles love in varied forms, be it platonic, romantic, or self-love. It also doubles as a coming-of-age record, reminding listeners and fans of love’s transformative power, and how it shapes our identities and influences the stories we tell.

“I want the listeners to listen to each song from the album and find the ones that resonate with them,” MONA explains. “Each song represents a different emotional experience—whether it’s the excitement of new love, nostalgia, curiosity, caution, or the challenges of understanding oneself and others. I hope to take listeners on a journey through heartfelt moments, vulnerability, and self-discovery, all wrapped in catchy melodies and relatable lyrics.” 

Musically, Love, MONA showcases the artist’s versatility, positioning her as a chameleonic figure capable of seamlessly navigating multiple genres and influences.

“Tayo Na Ba,” showcases MONA’s playful and dynamic vocal delivery, blending retro-futuristic production with early 2000s R&B, all while maintaining a distinctly modern OPM (Original Pilipino Music) sensibility. 

“Lapit Sa Akin” and “Boy From The ’90s,” both produced by Peter Lamiel, reveal MONA’s impressive range. Theformer recalls the sounds of Japanese pop legend Utada Hikaru and early Robyn, while Lapit Sa Akin draws inspiration from a colorful era, offering infectious melodies paired with a summery, feel-good chorus.

One of the album’s standout moments, “LuntiangMundo,” takes a reflective look at embracing our unique life journeys and finding joy in the simplest moments. The track revisits MONA’s guitar-driven pop sound but adds a dreamy, eclectic flair, thanks to production by South Korean producer J2. The result is a smooth, sensual vibe with a nostalgic touch.

Meanwhile, “Sandstorm,” a city-pop-inflected track produced by Jaxzmusic, blends groovy beats, funky instrumentation, and smooth rhythms, exuding confidence and a fresh, magnetic energy.

With Love, MONA now available, MONA looks ahead to her musical future with an eagerness to continue exploring new genres and styles. “I don’t know what the future holds for me, especially in this industry,” she reflects. “But I just do the things that I love most and enjoy it. December 13th, 2024 – Singapore – Out now, indie pop singer-songwriter Fiji Blue (aka Trevor Dering) shares his long-awaited debut album 'Glide'.  The 11-track project is rich with achingly personal yet universally relatable anecdotes on love and loss, both platonic and romantic.

“This album was written during a period of personal transition,” he explains. “There’s a lot of adjustment that comes with dealing with the end of relationships, feeling stuck in the middle trying to process all these intense feelings at the same time…It was like starting from scratch, both emotionally and in terms of writing songs themselves.”

After postponing his North American tour to support his wife Natasha during her recovery from brain surgery, Fiji Blue is set to bring 
'Glide' across the US and Canada this February and March. Last August, he performed at some of his biggest festivals yet, including Summer Sonic in Tokyo and Lalala Festival in Jakarta. Most recently, in November, Fiji Blue returned to our shores in Asia, with stops in Singapore, Taipei, Manila, and Hong Kong.

To tell the stories on the forthcoming album, Fiji Blue decamped to Topanga for a weeklong writing retreat, penning a song a day and getting lost in lush production – an ascendant helium balloon of synths, skittering electronics, and widescreen harmonies cut with the warm humanity of more organic instrumentation like piano and acoustic guitar.

There’s palatable emotion reverberating through every note, chord, and melody of 'Glide', balancing both the pain and affection that inspired them. At its most heartbreaking, it’s a rumination on those who never really leave us, the faint imprints that linger long after lives go their separate ways; at its most uplifting – the emotions Dering prefers to focus on – it’s rich with gratitude for his friends and family, a future full of hope and possibility.

“I love sad music, and if I could only write sad music, I would,” he says with a laugh. “The thing I really love about Fiji Blue is having uplifting harmonic and production elements alongside lyrics that sit more in that melancholy world. Sometimes it’s nice to find that middle ground.”

Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, in partnership with JOSH CULLEN of SB19 and Reach Out and Feed Philippines Inc., has launched a meaningful initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable children in underserved communities across the country. This partnership seeks to address both malnutrition and the environmental challenges contributing to poor health in these areas.

The initiative is part of Sony Music Group’s (SMG) global ‘Season of Giving’ campaign, which unites the company and its artists and songwriters in efforts to give back to the communities in which they operate. This year, the program marks an important shift, moving beyond just providing nourishing meals to tackling the root causes of malnutrition—especially the socio-environmental factors that exacerbate it.

“Previously, we focused on delivering direct nutritional support. However, experiences in areas like Sitio Dumpsite in Antipolo taught us that to make a real, lasting impact, we must address severe socio-environmental issues impacting children’s health,” explains Dawn Cabigon, Founder of Reach Out and Feed Philippines Inc. “For example, in Tondo’s Smokey Mountain, over 25,000 residents, including vulnerable children, live amidst high pollution levels from waste burning, exposing them to toxins that harm their development. These environmental factors are just as detrimental to children’s health as inadequate nutrition. In response, this project incorporates holistic support, addressing both the nutritional and environmental needs of these communities.”

JOSH CULLEN, took part in the outreach program at the San Pablo Apostol Parish in Tondo, Manila. During the event, Cullen performed tracks from his debut solo album, Lost & Found, including “No Control” and “1999,” as well as SB19’s popular hit “GENTO.” The acclaimed artist alsoinvited the kids to join him on stage for a viral dance challenge, creating a memorable and interactive experience.

Cullen, who has shared his personal story of overcoming hardship, connected deeply with the children in these communities, many of whom face similar challenges. Inhis speech, he spoke about his humble beginnings and encouraged the audience to persist in the face of adversity, reminding them that their dreams are within reach. At the end of the event, he joined volunteers fromReach Out and Feed Philippines Inc. to distribute gifts to the children who participated in the party games.

“Collaborating with JOSH CULLEN brought a relatable and inspiring figure to both our team and the young beneficiaries,” Cabigon shares. “His visit to Tondo, where many children have parents who are incarcerated or make a living through scavenging, offered them a powerful example of hope and resilience. By connecting with the kids, JOSH CULLEN reminded them that, despite their current circumstances, they too have the potential to achieve their dreams with hard work and determination.”

Award-winning Filipino band Ben&Ben has reached another milestone as they made it to New York’s Times Square, appearing in a billboard for Spotify.

This high-profile feature on the digital billboard is part of an initiative to promote their third studio album, The Traveller Across Dimensions. The campaign marks a significant step in expanding the band’s global presence, bringing their unique sound to new audiences worldwide.

Sponge Cola shares the other side of the story in new track “Kelly (Sagittarius)”

Filipino alt-rock band Sponge Cola continues to explore the complexities of heartbreak with the release of “Kelly (Sagittarius),” an emotionally charged pop-rock track that offers a different perspective on the aftermath of a painful breakup.

Serving as the fiery counterpart to last month’s melancholic “Kelly (Scorpio),” the new single completes a compelling two-part series, delving deep into the subjective nature of truth and emotion.

The dual tracks—“Kelly (Scorpio)” and “Kelly (Sagittarius)”—form a unique digital bundle that captures two distinct emotional responses to the same heartache. While “Scorpio” conveys a sense of defeat and resignation, “Sagittarius” presents a more hostile and confrontational take to a traumatic experience.

The band's vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon explains, "If you look at it from just one person's perspective, delivery plays a huge part in a message, even when you use the same words. While the Scorpio version sounds a bit more defeated, Sagittarius sounds more hostile. If you look at it as a response to the other, like a conversation, you can see how truth can sometimes be subjective. It's a 'he said, she said thing' kind of thing, and even with the same words, the truth is still unfathomably vague. There's a tendency to believe only one narrative, then totally shut the other out. But there's always two sides to every story, sometimes even more. People are quick to take sides and judge.” 

“Kelly (Sagittarius)” navigates a wide spectrum of emotions in the aftermath of a breakup—surrender, yearning, regret, anger, and frustration—perfectly capturing the intensity of heartache. The song was inspired by a vivid dream Yuzon couldn’t shake off, eventually leading him to write the track in its entirety.  

He notes that the bridge, which features the line “Ang siyang pumirma, ang siyang sumumpa…” (roughly translated as “The one who signed, the one who swore…”), represents a rare moment of clarity within the otherwise dream-like atmosphere of the song.

“I wrote that line as the most concrete part of the song, making it more grounded and lucid compared to the rest of the track,” says Yuzon. “I mean, come on, it talks about paperwork.”

Lead guitarist Armo Armovit reflects on the creative process behind the song, emphasizing the band’s commitment to emotional authenticity in their music. “We’re always experimenting with different elements, but we never lose sight of what works best in communicating the song’s core message,” Armovit admits. “Sometimes we let go of expectations and let the music take us where it wants to go—even if it leads us down two separate paths.”

1. Now or Never
SERIM and ALLEN contributed to the lyrics.
The focus track encapsulates the members’ fearless determination to face the world head-on. 2. Secret

WOOBIN participated in producing and composing, while WOOBIN, SERIM, and ALLEN contributed to the lyrics.
Co-produced by member WOOBIN, this track draws inspiration from the group’s journey on the survival programRoad to Kingdom: ACE OF ACE. The lyrics vividly portray the experience of soaring into the sky alongside their fans, LUVITY, after enduring a long period of darkness. Two of Filipino hip-hop’s promising stars, Alex Bruce and Zae, turn up the heat with the release of their collaborative single “A to Z (Drop It)”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

The fun, upbeat track marks a pivotal moment for both artists as they navigate a new chapter in their career, with Bruce preparing to turn 18 soon and Zae dropping her second track as an artist under AWAL. Together, they deliver another catchy R&B/hip-hop jam that embodies confidence, self-expression and femininity.

More than just a banger, the track is a declaration of empowerment. Featuring bold, sassy, and unapologetic vibes, “A to Z (Drop It)” is about “embracing who you are and owning your space,” shares Alex Bruce.

The collaboration exudes a natural chemistry between Bruce and Zae, two artists who hit it off instantly despite the material being their first joint. The song showcases the best of both worlds, blending their strengths and perspectives in one compelling package.


“Working with Zae brought a fire that matched mine, and together we created something that’s pure sassy, classy, nasty vibes,” says Alex Bruce. “This is us stepping up ourgame.”

Championing women in hip-hop

The song is a testament to the power of female solidarity in a genre often dominated by men. In the music video, the presence of strong women in Pinoy hip-hop is emphasized, including a special appearance by one of the heavy-hitting rookies in the game: Illest Morena. Inspired by the iconic dance movie, Step Up (2010), the music video revolves around the concept that women should be celebrated, and not pitted against each other.

“We’re not just here for the spotlight; we’re here to uplift each other and make sure our voices are heard,” shares Bruce. “In a space where women are often overlooked, we’re showing that we’ve got each other’s backs. Together, we rise and create a powerful statement of unity and respect.”

The music video was helmed by Louie Ong, a two-time MYX Music Award nominee. He brought the concept to life with dynamic cinematography and high-energy visuals, further enhancing its message.

The track also represents a breakthrough for both acts as they continue to challenge expectations and barriers in the Pinoy hip-hop scene. For Alex and Zae, this release is a declaration of their rightful place in a culture that is often slow to recognize women as key players.
