Introducing SHANNi: A rising phenom bridging generations with timeless appeal

November 15, 2024

Watch the music video of “Kdrama”

Meet SHANNi, the breakout artist who has swiftly captured the attention of Gen Z with her unique fusion of ‘70s-inspired torch ballads, jukebox soul, and 2010s-bedroom pop. Born into a rich musical legacy that includes influential figures like IV of Spades’ Blaster, K24/7 and Daddy’s Home’s “Daddy A” Silonga, and Smokey Mountain’s Shar Santos, SHANNi is carving out her own distinct path in music. With songwriting that transcends her years, she continues to push creative boundaries, proving she is an artist who is here to stay—both artistically and sonically.

Recently, SHANNi released her latest single, “Kdrama,” a song that has quickly gained traction online. An introspective track about the complexities of moving on, “Kdrama” explores the emotional challenges of letting go of both a person and the memories that linger. Inspired by the wave of Korean dramas that have captivated global audiences, the song reflects on the dramatic, often unpredictable nature of life itself—full of twists, turns, and always tinged with hope for the future.

Produced, arranged, and co-written by Zild Benitez, with additional songwriting contributions from Unique Salonga, Blaster Silonga, and SHANNi herself, “Kdrama” showcases the artist’s eclectic influences. Musically, the track channels the Manila Sound, drawing from the legacy of icons like Sharon Cuneta and Cinderella, while also evoking the timeless, vintage-pop styles of Dusty Springfield, Lulu, and Daryl Hall. Rather than embracing grandiosity, SHANNi infuses the song with a more understated, melodramatic sensibility—perfectly capturing the emotional depth she sought to express.

SHANNi explains, “For Kdrama, I really wanted to dive into those retro sounds, especially the torch ballads from the '70s. There’s something about that era that captures raw emotion so beautifully, and I felt it was perfect for the feelings I wanted to express. Mixing in a bit of Manila sound and classic pop just felt right like gives the song this nostalgic vibe while still feeling fresh. I aimed to create a song that resonated deeply, embodying both timeless and modern elements.”

A month ago, SHANNi also unveiled the music video for “Kdrama,” a poignant visual narrative that mirrors the song’s themes of emotional turmoil and the struggle of moving on. Set against the backdrop of a bustling, cosmopolitan city, the video chronicles the emotional aftermath of a relationship, juxtaposing memories from the past with the challenges of the present.

“These visuals alternate between the past and the present, highlighting how memories keep surfacing even when they try to move forward,” shares the young singer-songwriter. "It captures the relatable struggle of figuring things out—akin to a K-drama that leaves you pondering about the complexities of love. We designed it to feel like a mini-K-drama itself, showcasing those relatable emotions we all experience."

The MV was helmed by Pio Delos Reyes, Russell Sison, and Zyrus Ramos of Asia Pacific Film Institute (APFI) Productions. According to SHANNi, working with AFPI was an amazing experience, whose result mirrors theemotional intensity of the song in a visually arresting way. “It felt like a true partnership where we bounced ideas off each other and refined the story we wanted to tell. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out.”

With “Kdrama” and its accompanying music video, SHANNi continues to prove she is a dynamic force in the music industry—an artist who seamlessly blends nostalgia with modernity and who remains committed to forging a unique artistic journey. Stay tuned, as SHANNi is undoubtedly one to watch.

SHANNi’s “Kdrama” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the music video here.

Jason Marvin reflects on healing and second chance in Rewritten Promise

November 14, 2024

Listen to the album’s focus track “Pwede Pala”

Jason Marvin has released his new album, Rewritten Promise (Volume 2) via Sony Music Entertainment.

The Filipino singer-songwriter’s new album brings to light the raw emotions of regret, growth, and the difficult path toward healing. With this poetic sequel to his debut album, Promise, Marvin closes out an old chapter of his life through songs of regret, letting go, and moving on, and sets himself for a new adventure armed with redemption and hope.

“This album is about changing of plans and expectations,” Jason Marvin shares. “Acknowledging that we have no control over destiny; we can make plans, set expectations, and even prepare for what’s ahead. But when life throws you an unexpected storm, you just have to hold on to who you are and trust in God’s faithfulness.”

The album was conceived during some of the darkest days of Marvin’s life, a time of deep reflection and self-discovery. While undeniably written from a place of hurt and woundedness, the songs also became his lifeline—an outlet for emotional release and a source of comfort as he worked through his struggles. The music allowed Marvin to reframe his perspective on life, spirituality, and love, ultimately setting him on a path toward recovery and renewal.

Collaborating with two distinguished producers—Nicholas Lazaro of La Balls Studio and Shadiel Chan of 9 Degrees North—Marvin’s vision for Rewritten Promisecame to life through diverse creative influences. Lazaro, known for his enigmatic style, brought a distinct artistic touch to the album, while Chan’s expertise in creating soothing, atmospheric soundscapes further enhanced the emotional depth of the project.

Marvin reflects, “Working with Nick Lazaro was always a learning experience with the way he would suggest arbitrary elements and vocal harmonies for my songs that fits so perfectly. He was an older brother who knew his stuff through experience and guided me well. Working with Shadiel Chan is always a vibe. The coldness of Baguio, the quality of equipment, and Shad’s patience and lightness allows you to breathe and thus making the creative process so fluid. He’s someone you walk with side by side and together you discover how magical the output would be.”

Musically, Rewritten Promise explores acoustic folk sensibilities, woven together with lush arrangements and deeply personal lyrics. Marvin’s storytelling ability shines as he takes listeners on an emotional journey—from feelings of isolation to the catharsis of reconciliation and growth.

Jason Marvin explains his though process as a musician, and likens his process like that of a storyteller. “I usually love starting raw and simple. Setting up the listener’s ears for a whole range of dynamics, a simple acoustic guitar paints a picture of loneliness. From the first track of Mag-Isa being the denial stage, until the last tracks of PwedePala and Yaman being so grand with drums, strings, electric guitars—as the culmination of the album, I’ve always envisioned this album as a reflection of my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It’s that personal to me.”

The focal track of the album, “Pwede Pala,” is a testament to Marvin’s newfound hope and optimism. In this powerful song, he confronts his past fears and hesitations, finding strength in the idea of second chances and the possibility of love after loss.

Heartbroken people would joke about love being fleeting—walang forever—but I refuse to believe that even in the light of my story,” he admits. “I’ve seen it with my parents. Marriages can work. Marriages can be flourishing even after 40 years. Marriages can survive storms when both parties are willing to fight for it.”

With Rewritten Promise (Volume 2), Jason Marvin emerges as an artist unafraid to confront life’s toughest moments, offering his audience not only an intimate glimpse into his journey but also a message of hope and resilience.

Jason Marvin’s new album, Rewritten Promise (Volume 2) is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment. Watch the visualizer for the album’s focus track “Pwede Pala” here.

The 9-track release brings a new level of sophistication to her songcraft, touching on the familiar themes of her 2023 EP, whilenavigating wisdom and emotional honesty that go beyond her years.

“The stories are more real, the production has these rich new textures, and overall, it’s way more intimate,” says the prolificrecording star. “This chapter is me opening up more about who I am, especially after coming out earlier this year. I think my writing’s gotten a little more reckless and freer—I’m just saying what I want to say without holding back."

Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2) embodies every aspect of Denise Julia: the real person stepping out of the limelight and online fanfare, stripped to the core with nothing but life lessons and bittersweet endings. On her latest EP, she candidly expressed the feelings of being vulnerable and in love, and putting on a brave face even when confronted by the difficult times.

Denise Julia's songwriting, characterized by unsparing confessionals that explore her sexuality and the messy nature of adolescent life choices, shines brighter this time around—a proof that there’s a silver lining in openness. In Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2), the R&B/soul vixen doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out, but she knows that through her storytelling, she would inspire more women and queer folks to go with their gut feel and embrace the love and respect they truly deserve.

“I wanted to capture those bittersweet moments of love and self-discovery—the real stuff we don’t always put into words,” DJ adds. “My inspiration was a mix of personal experiences, growing into myself, and just the feelings people keep bottled up but wish they could say out loud."

Denise Julia’s latest EP draws a lot from classic R&B but doesn’t shy away from embracing its modern edge. Whether it’s a sensual bop straight from the Aaliyah/Brandy playbook or a confessional ballad that reveals moments of unfiltered fragility, the B.A.D. hitmaker knows when to lurch forward or snap back with her chameleonic but sultry singing style. For this EP, she hones her contemporary R&B sound with touches of soul and pop, going for something that is both nostalgic and fresh.

Some of the highlights of the EP include the focus track “sweet nothings,” a collaboration with Jay R, the R&B King of the Philippines. Propelling the narrative forward with transcendent moments of harmony and sensual bliss, the song tackles the honeymoon-phase feeling in a relationship where everything feels so good that you don’t want to let go.

According to the ‘Patron Saint of Situationships,’ as the fans often call her, working with Jay R was a dream come true. “He understands R&B on such a deep level, and having his influence really elevated the song. I feel like if you told young Denise that she would collaborate with the King of R&B in the future, she would have never believed you, so this is such a monumental thing for me. He’s the best at what he does, and I hope to take what I’ve learned from working with him into my own craft.”

Other notable collaborations in the EP were the DENȲ-assisted “don’t matter,” which showcases the duo’s effortlessly sultry side while maintaining their individuality throughout the process, and “twin flames,” which features Vietnamese-American artist thuy. Denise Julia considers both artists an inspiration, with each adding their own flavor to the material.

Here is the track list for Sweet Nothings (Chapter 2):

1. better than he does

2. sweet nothings (feat. Jay R)

3. thinkin’ bout you

4. twin flames (feat. thuy)

5. (boy it’s just) attraction

6. inhibitions

7. bet

8. there’s no way you’d want me back

9. don’t matter (feat. DENȲ)

Ely Buendia drops sophomore album, Method Adaptor

November 8, 2024

Listen to the focus track “Kandarapa”

OPM icon Ely Buendia marks an essential chapter in his solo career with the release of his sophomore album, Method Adaptor—out on Friday, November 8, 2024, via Offshore Music and Sony Music Entertainment.

Maintaining the sonic hallmarks that have made him a beloved figure in Pinoy rock, Ely Buendia’s new album examines memories, experiences, and social issues with both self-awareness and maturity. As someone who is known for unpacking cultural and personal narratives in ways that could be incisive but relatable, Ely has truly mastered the art form of reflection, especially when he weaves words and feelings with intricate instrumentation. On Method Adaptor, he delivers mastery in both restraint and complexity, often balancing both skills to create a sonic tapestry that instantly pulls listeners into its orbit.

As Ely explains it best, “I think all the songs have something to do with rebelling—be it from the disappointments and hardships of life or from the control that people want to have on your mind. I would say these are the most defiant songs I’ve written so far.”

Navigating through themes of sorrow, anger, joy, and triumph, the ten-track record shapes up to be one of the most captivating rock releases that came down the pike in recent memory. After being in the music business for more than 30 years, Ely admits that this album explores vulnerability that comes from a place of complicated humanity, revealing moments of fragility and darkness as he deals with the pressures of social expectations and career.

“Fame didn’t mix well with me,” Ely Buendia shares. “I just felt it got in the way of my trying to evolve as an artist and made me more guarded as a whole. Coming out for me means owning everything, both my failures and successes.”

Produced by Jerome Velasco and Audry Dionisio, with a little help from Erwin Romulo, Method Adaptor sounds consistently delightful from top to bottom, but with enough room to surprise or provoke.

"Kandarapa," the album's focus track and one of its highlights, is about fighting through the hard times not knowing if you can make it until the end. The music legend reveals that there are times when pressure in life can be a bit overwhelming, and all you want is to buckle and submit to the whim. “Sometimes you feel like you’re going to have to battle your way through the rest of your life.”

Other featured tracks in the album include previously releases “Tagpi-Tagping Piraso” and “Bulaklak Sa Buwan;” the somber piano ballad “Faithful Song,” the brooding, synth-pop tune “Kontrabando,” and the menacing stomper “Tamang Hinala”—to name a few.

Check out the Method Adaptor track list:

1. Faithful Song

2. Kandarapa

3. Bulaklak Sa Buwan

4. Tamang Hinala

5. Deadbeat Creeper

6. Sige

7. Tagpi-Tagping Piraso

8. Kontrabando

9. Chance Passenger

10. Esprit de Corpse

Ellie’s First Day at the Dentist: A Teaching Tale

November 7, 2024

Ellie’s First Day at the Dentist by Dennise Jean P. Manuben is a tale designed to teach kids about dentists. Many children have not visited their dentists yet, especially since the pandemic has prevented face to face checkups. I myself am guilty of that, since I was only able to recently visit my dentist for cleaning since the pandemic. I am thankful that I did, because I would like to preserve my smile. I hope that more people, especially kids, will visit their dentists as well.

This book was written and illustrated by the precocious author. I would like to commend her for inspiring children to have their teeth checked. I find the illustrations whimsical and appropriate for her age. The layouting and editing by Nellen B. Coronado is also noteworthy as the overall book is pleasant and inviting.

More children should be cautioned about avoiding sweets, such as candies. This book successfully does that. I know that more and more child authors are self-publishing their books. I hope that they will focus on stories that teach moral lessons and educational values. Visiting the dentist is a lifelong habit that must be instilled without unnecessary fear at an early age. This book achieves that, and also provides an enjoyable reading experience. Even as an adult, I was encouraged to continue observing proper dental hygiene through this book.

I would like to see more stories by the author, along with her illustrations. She has the potential to go a long way. This is only the beginning for her. She has the makings of writing more books in her career.

The layout artist also deserves commendation, and I hope that she has more projects not just in children’s books, but in other genres as well.

Mythica Obscura Volumes 1-4: A Heritage Project

November 7, 2024

Mythica Obscura Volumes 1-4 by Karl Gaverza is a heritage project like no other. The author is the unparalleled founder and scribe behind Philippine Spirits, a website that features mythical horror stories of our country. I am a fan, and this book was a treat that arrived just in time for Halloween weekend.

I am already a fan of the author, particularly of his efforts to preserve our country’s horror literature. Most of them were passed on through oral tradition, and this has been greatly affected by several factors such as colonization and the passage of time. Discovering our rich horror stories happened during the pandemic, when I felt the need to unwind from working at home by listening to podcasts. There, I discovered horror and true crime podcasts from the Philippines. Additional research on my part has led me to Philippine Spirits, which was my introduction to the author’s works both as a writer and a researcher.

Mythica Obscura is filled with familiar stories such as Mr. Brown. I am no longer afraid while reading these stories because I am a horror fan myself. The illustrations have brought back the zine feel in the book, which I actually appreciate given that I do encounter zines myself during conventions and book fairs. To have all of these folk horror tales in one book is thrilling because it will be a valuable resource material for students who can further study them. It can also provide casual entertainment to readers like me, and ties to the motherland to those who are part of the Filipino diaspora.

I would like to commend the author for commissioning Filipino artists to illustrate his book. It is also noteworthy that he is working with people from different parts of the country to translate his stories into different local languages and dialects.

I am excited to see what’s next for the author, as well as for Philippine Spirits.

The Requiem Thesis: A Love Letter to Psychology

November 7, 2024

The Requiem Thesis by Christian Khiel Pineda Unto is a love letter to psychology. The author is a psychometrician by profession, and his work is evident in this novel. Including Freud in his novel is a brave effort considering that not everyone is into novels that are intellectual in nature. It is fortunate and beneficial to the reading public though that authors like Christian are unfazed by the general idea that Filipinos do not like intellectual novels. In fact, he enriches Philippine literature at large by contributing this rich and atmospheric novel to its fold.

Reading The Requiem Thesis is a journey through escapism. I enjoyed being in another time and place through this novel, as I was reading this during a challenging time in my life. I am diagnosed with two mental illnesses, and I found this book to be a valuable resource considering that I have to work harder than most people in order to function properly. I am far from normal, and yet, this book made me feel that through diligence and hard work on my part, I will be able to reach a level of normalcy which can enable me to function and become productive. The most important components of my healing are that I am conscious and that I am willing to let my doctor help me become a better version of myself.

It is remarkable that I was able to see semblances of hope that I will have mental stability in a work of fiction. I think that novels are meant to guide us through stories and experiences which the author considers to be helpful to his readers. The Requiem Thesis was an enjoyable read. I even found the experimental study at the end of the book entertaining because my best friend happens to be a scientist.

The Art of Forex: A Strategic Approach

November 7, 2024

The Art of Forex by Alexander Wee Gonzales is a strategic approach to trading. My first impression of the book was that it was different from the typical books I have encountered on the subject. Most of them were thick, hardbound, and intimidating. This book by Xander is written in plain English. Also, he did not promise the moon and the stars, but rather the ability to develop his approach called “Chart Vision”. He made forex approachable and comprehensible in less than one hundred pages.

It is evident in the book that the author is passionate about his craft. His way of teaching trading as both an art and a science cannot be achieved without the innate love for his work. In the beginning of the book, he wrote that no two traders are the same, and that it is an individual journey. This is true, and his “chart vision” approach is a solid foundation as a strategy.

My favorite part is the chapter on the psychology of the forex game. Here, I was able to understand the author’s roots in Taekwondo and how his background in martial arts has honed his resiliency and creativity. He was able to develop his own style in his sport, which was the similar game plan he had for forex trading. While learning the basics and the rules of the game, he built his own strategies through experience, wins, losses, and developing his signature style. I like this because it is not only applicable to trading, but to everyday life as well.

While I do not engage in forex trading, I have definitely learned some key concepts which I could apply to managing my own resources and continuing my journey as a published author and writer.

Department of Irregular Elimination: An Introspective Journey

November 7, 2024

D.I.E. (Department of Irregular Elimination by Just Villanueva seems like your typical science fiction novel in the beginning: dystopian plot, technological elements, and anger. Lots and lots of anger. But what sets this novel apart is the journey through the values held by its protagonist.

Mavelin Diaz is twenty-one. At such an impressionable age, she joins DIE, the Department of Irregular Elimination. She is tasked to kill unwanted forces such as terrorists in order to bring some semblance of order to a dystopian Philippines. She channels her energy into completing her expected tasks, but unforeseen events force her to make difficult choices. These choices bring her to an introspective journey, which happens in parallel to her exploits. And while the setting is a dystopian Philippines, there are still familiar places in the book. Benguet, for example, was the setting of one of their flights. I would like to commend the author for including one of my favorite provinces in the novel, and for describing it as full of trees. In an unforgiving future, it is comforting that trees still exist in fiction.

Loyalty is given to a country that provides its citizens enough reasons to defend it. DIE has reminded me of how love of country is still supposed to be upheld even during challenging times, and under questionable leadership. We need to be like Mav- brave, flawed, and loyal to a fault.

It is noteworthy that despite the cussing and the challenges that Mav faces, the novel highlights the importance of values such as forgiveness and patriotism. It is inspiring to serve one’s country even when the lines are blurred between right and wrong. I am eager to see how today’s readers will react to a Filipino science fiction novel such as this one. We definitely need more sci-fi in this country.

Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Science Coursebook Volume 2: The Conversation Continues

November 7, 2024

Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Science Coursebook Volume 2 by Adrien Kyle M. Jacinto, RPh, MS is an exam reviewer designed to aid pharmacy graduates ace local and international exams. While both volumes of the author’s coursebooks were designed to provide all the essential information on all board subjects, I treated it as the continuation of my conversation with the author about pharmacy.

As someone with no knowledge in pharmacy, I must admit that the first volume was more entertaining for me. I read it to pass time, and it made me understand the basics of pharmacy. This volume was a deep dive into concepts which were totally foreign to me, such analytical chemistry and manufacturing pharmacy. Good thing that the book had several illustrations which helped me grasp the information better.

What I found interesting in this book was the part on legal pharmacy and ethics in the Philippines. I am a PWD, and I am benefiting from indigent patient programs in hospitals and LGUs. It was empowering to know that there are laws that give me access to cheaper medicines, such as generic alternatives. In fact, my favorite concept was nonmaleficence, which means “to never injure or wrong the sick”. As someone with limited means, I have experienced various forms of discrimination because I always ask for help in order to afford my healthcare. Knowing that there are laws that protect me has inspired me to continue fighting for my life and for my rights.

Similar to the first volume, the author has provided a QR code which lets the reader access the solutions to the sample problems online. I commend the author for this measure to combat book piracy, since access to the solutions online is subject to his approval. I would also like to commend the author for providing his email address so that readers can address issues and concerts to him personally. This fosters academic discourse and intellectual improvement.

Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Science Coursebook Volume 1: A Pharmacy Exam Reviewer

November 7, 2024

Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Science Coursebook Volume 1 by Adrien Kyle M. Jacinto, RPh, MS is a pharmacy exam reviewer like no other. I must admit that I have no background in this field. My background is in the Humanities. However, I have always been a frustrated scientist. My best friend in college was a biology professor, and he instilled in me the value of applying the scientific method in my everyday thought process. As a result, I have tackled this book review assignment as an experiment. My goal is to understand the basic principles of pharmacy without having the educational background in this branch of science.

The result was a trippy read. I am a visual learner, so the illustrations helped me appreciate the concepts which were otherwise foreign to me. Since I am a person with a disability and I am taking medication, it was refreshing to see visual representations of the antidepressants that I take. And as someone with several drug allergies, it was enlightening to see how the drugs that I am allergic to work, such as penicillin.

There is a QR code provided by the author which lets the reader access the solutions to the sample problems online. I find this an effective measure in combating book piracy. More importantly, the author has provided his email address in order to address any concerns regarding the book. I commend the author for initiating the exchange of ideas not only for the reader’s benefit, but also for his own continuous learning.

I highly doubt if the information I have read will help me in everyday life, but I must say that the book has helped me appreciate pharmacy as both a science and an art. The author is evidently passionate about his field of study, and I am eager to see how the second volume will help me appreciate pharmacy as an approachable series of concepts instead of a foreign language.
