Linya-Linya Land returns this 2024 with an exciting line-up of local talent that celebrates diversity across different lines of antics, artistry, and advocacy for the Ka-Linya community and beyond.

 

The multi-format annual festival features wavemakers in music, comedy, and performance art, meaningfully curated to welcome new and mainstay concertgoers alike. Filipino singer-songwriters, bands, and rappers, Lola Amour, Over October, Unique Salonga, Cheats, Oh! Flamingo, KJah, Mhot, and Apoc represent their corner of the music scene in the event.

 

Improvisational theater performers and stand-up comedians are also set to take the stage, comprising SPIT Manila; GB Labrador, James Caraan, Nonong Ballinan, Ryan Rems, and Muman Reyes of The KoolPals, and Comedy Manila’s Victor Anastacio and Issa Villaverde.

 

An aspect that makes this year’s return extra special is introducing drag performance art to its loyal audience. Ru Paul’s Drag Race Philippines Season 3 superstar, Tita Baby, joins the roster bringing the world of drag and diversity to Linya-Linya Land.

 

At the heart of this event is Linya-Linya’s advocacy of supporting homegrown artists and performers while amplifying the local art and creative industry's voice—where it has put down its roots for nearly 10 years. The event aims to create a space where diversity in talent and passion for social change can thrive, alongside non-profit organizations and partner communities, such as the Angat Buhay Foundation, AHA! Learning Center, The Learning Lab, and PANTAY.

As Ali Sangalang, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Linya-Linya, puts it, “Celebration ito ng Filipino arts and culture mula sa iba’t ibang linya. Different art forms—from music, comedy, to performance art—nagsama-sama sa iisang entablado para i-showcase ang Filipino creativity, at itulak din ang iba’t ibang adbokasiya. Masaya kami sa Linya-Linya na ikonekta at pagtagpo-tagpuin silang lahat sa isang masaya at makabuluhang event.”

 

Apart from show-stopping performances, the event is also packed with activities brought by Linya-Linya and the “ambassadors of fun”—Breakout Manila, Kape-Kape, Puddy Rock Studio, and Heroes Headquarters. Together, the house of brands is looking forward to creating a day with something for everyone to enjoy in this integrated and interactive experience.

Linya-Linya Land 2024 will take place on November 30, 2024 (Saturday) at 123 Block, Mandala Park in Mandaluyong City, from 2 PM onwards.

Visionary electronic artist Knock2 has just unleashed his anthemic new single “hold my hand,” the second track to drop from his forthcoming debut album NOLIMIT. Following NOLIMITs lead single “
feel U luv me” (which cleverly sampled PARTYNEXTDOOR’s “TBH”), “hold my hand” has been a highly-anticipated ID since Knock2 began teasing the track atLollapalooza and HARD Summer in 2023, his subsequent sold-out, headlining ROOM202 tour, as well as at his co-headlining, four consecutive sold-out shows at Shrine Auditorium last fall.

The track combines soaring, euphoric synth chord progressions with angelic vocals courtesy of Sophia Giripari, transporting listeners to a nostalgic era of cathartic Main Stage anthems. Representing a modern take on the progressive and electro-house stylings of the early-2010s, the track reinvigorates that vintage sound with Knock2’s signature ear for indelible melodies and vibrant instrumental production.

The driving conceptual narrative behind NOLIMIT truly begins to unfold via the vibrant “Hold My Hand” music video. Directed by 3D animator Alec West, the “Hold My Hand” music video brings the NOLIMITuniverse to life via West’s trademark, low-poly animation style.
 
The video introduces fans to the character Dash - a mysterious hacker who resides in his hideout deep within a city’s junkyard. As the video progresses, we see Dash encounter a girl who joins him on adventures across the metropolis - a lively montage told through vibrant sequences of animation that immerse the viewer into NOLIMIT’s retro-futuristic worldview. 
 
Fans can hear Knock2 play “Hold My Hand” and other NOLIMIT tracks at his upcoming collaborative sets with ISOKNOCK, who have special, multi-day events planned at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Auditoriumand San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium. Sean Archer explores complicated adolescent life in debut EP, BANDA KA NANG BANDA

Sean Archer marks his official debut with the release of his first EP, BANDA KA NANG BANDA, under Sony Music Entertainment.

Named after a common phrase often alluded to passionate musicians whose connection with performing sees no limits, the title of the EP reflects the immediacy and grit of Sean Archer’s rock-leaning sound, drawing inspiration from his ‘90s grunge and pop-punk influences. 

The multi-talented newcomer explains, "BANDA KA NANG BANDA talks about pushing through with your love of music despite the stigma it holds within our society, where people see music as a waste of time instead of a beneficial career or hobby. This record is very personal to me because it came from a place of confessional expression. I'm proud to have written songs that reflect my experiences as an adolescent in my early twenties, navigating love, sleep deprivation, band life, and interest in zodiac signs.”

Sean Archer co-produced the album with his mentor Rico Blanco, with award-winning record producer and engineer Angee Rozul taking over the mixing duties. The former also arranged most of the songs, going for a raw and heavy sonic direction that fits the current times.

Sean Archer revealed that he originally released three of the songs before deciding to re-record them with Rico and Angee. He re-recorded the other previously unreleased tracks, in separate sessions.

The young artist under Balcony Entertainment considers the recording process an “efficient” and memorable experience, where he admitted learning so much from his collaborators. For instance, he shares that he completed the vocals for three songs in a single day. "This was due to Rico's advice of not thinking too much about the process and just letting the magic happen. It was a new experience for me, and I immediately took on this new mindset as a musician.”

Standouts in the EP include “Puyat,” his breakout hit, which delivers three-chord menace with pop sensibilities; “Red Flag,” a soaring anthem that shows his more vulnerable side; “Patay,” a dynamic track filled with brash hooks and intense energy; and “Yayaman,” an ode to youthful recklessness and drunken passion. The EP’s focus track “Ms. Zodiac” continues his coming-of-age journey with a burst of romance, wrapping up the 6-track release on a high note.

Taken as a whole, BANDA KA NANG BANDA is a remarkably restless work that strikes a balance between emotional tenderness and intensity. The writing, as expected, is manic and unapologetic, but never loses its sense of truth and youthfulness—a commitment that makes his new record all the more human.

Ben&Ben steers clear of negativity on new arena-rock anthem “Triumph”

The explosive track serves as the first single off their soon-to-be-released third album, The Traveller Across Dimensions

 

Filipino band Ben&Ben heralds the start of a new era with the release of “Triumph,” the first single off their upcoming third album, The Traveller Across Dimensions, due out on November 29, 2024 via Sony Music Entertainment.

A massive rock anthem that defies sonic expectations, “Triumph” empowers listeners to work on quieting the voices inside their heads and not let anything or anyone hinder the progress that they’ve gained in reaching their goals and dreams.

The nine-piece act's very own Paolo and Miguel Benjamin penned the stadium rouser, which was deeply inspired by the difficult struggles that the band has experienced over the years, particularly the kind that "would leave you running on empty andwondering how much longer things would have to go on feeling so unbearably heavy."

The band explains, "Triumph is an anthem for those who are tired of being tired. It's the fight song for the moments we have to be our own cheerleader, our own support system, our own best friend, our own defender. Even in our weakest moments, there are times we may feel the need to manifest victory, to speak hope into ourselves that we can emerge through any struggle triumphant.”

With a more theatrical approach to songwriting and production, Ben&Ben's latest single achieves remarkable heights, driven by glam rock bombast and virtuosic instrumentation. It’s the first song that they've arranged and collaborated with their producer and friend, Ziv, whose expertise and skill added an invaluable layer of character and nuance to so many of their songs for the forthcoming album, including "Triumph."

“For each song in the album, we would spend a day or two essentially conducting a workshop or brainstorming process to find what direction the song is pulling us towards,” Ben&Ben reveals. "As part of the democratic process, each band member contributes their ideas for the song while Ziv synthesizes and streamlines everything to gradually shape the final arrangement. After we settle on a band arrangement for the song, we head to the studio where even more details are meticulously fine-tuned.”

Pivoting towards a more multimedia approach for the next chapter of their music releases, Ben&Ben conveys a new dimension of storytelling through a fully 3D animated music video. 

Introducing the character of Liwanag, the titular traveler from their new album, the music video of “Triumph” essays the story in a way that will have the audience immersed and curious about her journey. The concept of the MV was conceived by Paolo Benjamin, alongside Miguel Benjamin and the rest of the group, in collaboration with the extremely talented folks at Puppeteer Studios. 

“We wanted to stray from the more reality-based music videos we've done so many of throughout our career, and as kids who grew up lovers of animation, video games, and all things fantastical, we really believe that animation is one of the most compelling ways to tell a story,” the critically acclaimed band shares in a press statement. "We naturally gravitate toward supporting characters who possess their own struggles, motivations, and emotions. Sometimes, we may find ourselves relating more to fictional characters than we do to real-life figures, as it often feels like life is stranger than fiction."

James Reid expresses the joy of summer romance on “Mirasol”

James Reid continues to earworm his way to pop ubiquity with the release of “Mirasol”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

His latest single not only oozes with undeniable charisma but also reinstates his potential as a hitmaker of first-rate caliber, boasting an impressive run of inescapable chart-toppers in the 2010s.

According to James, the song is about falling in love with a sunflower and how romance is something that requires appreciation, protection, and understanding. “Love is an organic process and needs to grow naturally,” he adds.

“Mirasol” is co-written by James and Alison Shore, an R&B artist whose work brims with effortless cool and ‘90s suave. Both accomplished artists thought of using the sunflower as a metaphor “for a relationship that gives off an air of sweet summer romance and innocence.”

As James explains it further, “I want to connect on a different level with my fans that I haven’t been able to do before. Writing in Tagalog (Filipino) was a very welcomed challenge for me, and I’ve enjoyed it so much.”

One Click Straight’s Tim Marquez, a frequent collaborator of James himself, also brought a tapestry of effortlessly blissful sound that complements the romantic nature of the lyrics. The final product evokes the more commercial and critically acclaimed work of James Reid during the Diary Ng Panget era, but rendered with more sophistication and subtlety, production-wise.

“Mirasol” serves as the third single off his upcoming EP, jgh, which is slated to drop on November 22, 2024. The soon-to-be-released EP, which contains tracks such as “Sandal” and “Hurt Me Too,” is described to be a “return-to-form” record, touching on his softer, more vulnerable side and more pop-leaning direction.

Phum Viphurit goes exploring on his adventurous new EP, Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1

Following the surprising singles “The Other Side” and “Balter Baby,” Phum Viphurit presents his adventurous new project Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1 in its complete form. Released to streaming platforms on October 17, 2024, the Bangkok-born singer-songwriter takes his creativity and eccentricity to new heights via the four-song EP which tells the story of Paul Vibhavadi, the world’s fastest moving bilingual sloth who is on a quest to find inner peace. 

 

The concept for Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1 came from Phum wanting to stretch the boundaries of his music, which then led the 29-year-old film school graduate down other creative avenues for his songwriting. “For the longest time I've been into early 2000s house and I always knew that I wanted to incorporate my guitar playing into that type of BPM. When I had the idea of these four tracks in mind, I immediately thought alter-ego,” he says. “I've always found when artists do projects where they get to explore an alter-ego, whether that's Tyler, the Creator doing Igor or David Bowie being Ziggy Stardust, there's almost a sense of newness in it and that excited me. It also allowed me to detach myself from writing from my diary or from such personal experiences, and use my screenwriter brain to make this character and the story arc within this little new universe.”

 

When it came to deciding the alter ego’s name and character, Phum didn’t have to look very far. “The sloth has been my logo for the last two years, and there’s something very calming about it that’s very true to my own character. The name Paul Vibhavadi is actually a play on my initials, Phum Viphurit/Paul Vibhavadi. Vibhavadi is quite a famous street in Bangkok, and Paul is my alias whenever I play FIFA or NBA 2K. When I make any other sports characters, his name will always be Paul Vibhavadi. So why not?”

 

 

With Phum stepping into Paul’s shoes, the Paul VibhavadiVol. 1 EP takes us on the sloth’s journey as an out-of-place city dweller in search of the magical forest of Himmapan. Opening track “The Other Side” is a house music banger that sees Paul encounter a sloth-worshipping tribe that lulls him into getting carried away by the idolatry; the instrumental dance track “Balter Baby” then soundtracks Paul cavorting with the tribe before he floats away in a glowing bubble. “Past Life,“ which features rapper TangBadVoice, takes a more contemplative tone in which Paul is overcome with emotion as he recollects his former lives while floating away; and in the subdued finale “If This Is the End”, Paul reaches the gateway of his destination and considers what he has to leave behind if he decides to enter.

 

Though the Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1 EP is an exercise in storytelling via a fictional character, Phum couldn’t help but find similarities with his own life. “I spoke to an artist friend about this project, and he said, ‘Sometimes when you put on a mask, that’s when your work is the most honest.’ Because there’s only a physical filter, and behind that you can say so many things because it’s your honest, pure thoughts and expression,” says Phum. “That stuck with me, and the story of Paul Vibhavadi is somewhat parallel. There’s definitely some parallels to my own life and the downfalls of fame that I’ve seen.”

 

 

 

 

It's this juxtaposition of taking a light-hearted approach to deep lyrical themes that makes Paul Vibhavadi Vol. 1 a special project by a special artist. For his part, Phum Viphurit – who has taken to dressing up in full costume as Paul Vibhavadi in his recent Instagram posts and music videos – would like to emphasize the fun aspect. “All in all it’s a lot of fun. The subject matter can be a bit intense if you look at it that deeply, but I’ve had a lot of fun working on this character and this project,” he says. “I hope it shows.”

Filipino singer-songwriter Frank Ely lives up to his potential as one of the country’s promising new greats with the release of his new single “Maisayaw”—out now via EvosoundPhilippines.

The Kundiman-inspired track finds Frank Ely expressing his romantic admiration from a distance, displaying earnestness and levity in the most beautifully understated way.

Certified heart-stopper

“The song is a serenade for someone whose heart you want to win, a poem for the person who made you feel something you've never felt with anyone else—the one you cannot bear to lose and could never forget if they were to leave,” shares the breakthrough solo act.

According to Frank Ely, he originally composed the song in 2023 for his now-girlfriend but wasn’t fully produced at the time because he didn’t want the logistical limitations to get in the way of its quality and potential. A year after that pivotal moment, Frank Ely got signed to a record label called Evosound Philippines and eventually got the opportunity to record the material in an actual studio.

“It was great working with my producer, Paulo Agudelo, who understood the assignment and brought my vision back to life,” Frank Ely explains. “What I like about Paulo’s treatment is how it sounded perfectly aligned with the sonic direction of my previous work, but redressed with a more sophisticated and refined approach.”

Technological first

Evosound Philippines will be releasing Frank Ely’s “Maisayaw” in a postcard format, having the same function as a vinyl single that can be spun in a regular record player or a turntable. Embossed with comparatively light plastic grooves, the post-card vinyl will be the first of its kind to be released in the country.

“Evosound reached out to me to have my single pressed on a postcard vinyl,” Frank Ely reveals. “I thought it was cool to be the pioneering act to have my song pressed in a format that’s never been done, at least locally. It’s interesting how music packaging can change the course of the game and offer an exciting glimpse into the future of releases. The possibilities are just endless.”

Tyla adds to the fever of her breakout season with the arrival of the deluxe edition of her debut album, TYLA, available now as TYLA +. The refreshed album, which features three brand new tracks from the GRAMMY-winning singer, celebrates the historic run that began in Summer ‘23 and has resulted in the birth of true superstardom.

On TYLA +, Tyla shines a light on rising South African talent, featuring DJ/producer Tony Duardo and singers Optimist and Maestro, on the opening track of the deluxe trio, “Shake Ah.” The following two songs, “Push 2 Start” and “Back To You,” exhibit Tyla’s continued infusion of R&B into her Amapiano-led palate. “When Amapianowould come on, we would see everybody’s moves just change. The nominations come on the heels of Tyla’s victorious summer 2024, during which she earned two BET Awards—‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best International Act’—to go with a ‘Best Afrobeats Video’ at the MTV VMAs.

 

For Tyla, however, there is much more to come. She recently announced a pair of massive tour dates: Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 in her native South Africa, where she hasn’t performed since “Water” was released. It will be a welcomed homecoming for Tyla who, after just one album, is already one of the most globally renowned and successful artists ever from the region. Tickets will be on sale Thursday morning.

 

There is also more music still to come, as Tyla told PEOPLE in September. “It's different,” she said. “I've grown so much this year. I've evolved in so many different aspects that this new music is going to be that version of me, the now version of Tyla.

The Bloomfields releases new single "Get Up"

Ahead of their highly anticipated 20th anniversary show this month, The Bloomfields have dropped “Get Up,” a new single that the band originally wrote in 2019.

Built around a single-chord jam, “Get Up” draws inspiration from the whimsical era of ‘60s psychedelic rock. The energetic track brims with a heavy dose of loud, droning guitars and hypnotic soundscapes, providing a stark contrast to their more pop-leaning work.

According to the band, they wrote the song without the intention of making a hit. “It felt wonderful to release it as our fourth single and share it with our audience.”

The Bloomfield explains, “It’s a high-energy track that felt perfect to release ahead of our 20th-anniversary show, getting people hyped and ready.”

Band members Rocky Collado and Lakan Hila penned"Get Up,” with the latter taking care of the mixing duties. Giving the track a retro feel with modern energy, Lakanmade sure that his approach to production reflected The Bloomfields’ 1960s and 1970s aesthetic while embracing a hard-hitting, jam-driven sound.

The indie pop/rock outfit will be performing the song live for the very first time at Byaheng Mahiwaga: The Bloomfields 20th Anniversary Gig, happening on October 25, 2024, at Fin and Claw, Timog, Quezon City.

Chronicling their musical journey for the past two decades, the special show aims to “treat fans to a night of memorable music and fun” as The Bloomfields perform some of the most iconic originals from their catalog, along with notable covers from their repertoire.

The highly anticipated event will include a full-length set from The Bloomfields, a performance by High Targets, a Motown-influenced ska/reggae band, and a special reunion with former bandmate Dino Pascual, who is preparing to launch his solo career next year.

The Rest Is Noise PH Halloween Special feat. Thailand's KIKI, M1ss Jade So, Munimuni, CRWN and more!

The Rest Is Noise PH, an independent production outfit that champions the best of Asian music and strengthens regional and global connections, onstage or in the digital space, will be throwing a Halloween party to cap off a fantastic year in music.

Acclaimed Thai alternative pop trio KIKI will be headlining the Halloween soiree and will be performing in the Philippines for the very first time. Known for their immediately catchy songs that blend pop and funk elements with groovy basslines, colorful synths, hip-hop and lo-fi elements, and soulful vocals, the Bangkok-based band has charmed music festivals all around the world with their showstopping performances. They are also preparing to embark on an Asian tour, which will include multiple stops in Tokyo, Nagoya, Nagano, Singapore, Jakarta, and Manila.

 

 

Other acts on the bill include Filipino drag superstar M1ss Jade So, whose incredible run on the second season of Drag Race Philippines captivated fans all over the world—thanks to her distinct antics, charisma, and talent.

AXEAN Festival alums Munimuni and CRWN will also be performing at The Rest Is Noise PH’s Halloween special, along with Davao-based hip-hop collective Playertwo and Chain Messages, who will be dropping a special DJ set to culminate the fun and exciting event.

The Rest Is Noise Halloween Special will take place at Sari-Sari Cocktails in Makati City on October 27, 2024, from 7 p.m. onward. Early bird tickets are available in limited quantity via bit.ly/kikimanila.

The event also encourages attendees to dress up in their Halloween costumes for a special care package from The Rest Is Noise PH. The top three with the best costumes will also win a special prize.

Phum Viphurit Goes Deeper into the World of Paul Vibhavadi in “Balter Baby”

After surprising fans with his story-driven conceptual single “The Other Side”, Bangkok-born singer-songwriter Phum Viphurit goes even deeper into the world of his alter ego Paul Vibhavadi on “Balter Baby”, the second single from his upcoming EP PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1. Released to streaming platforms on October 9, 2024, this dance-oriented piece is Phum’s first instrumental-only track that showcases another side of his musical tastes and capabilities. An animated music video for “Balter Baby” by Shea Oracheski and James Bedggood based on Phum’s concept will also debut on the official Phum Viphurit YouTube channel.

 

In terms of narrative, “Balter Baby” picks up just before where “The Other Side” left off, in which the lovable sloth Paul Vibhavadi is grappling with his newfound adulation amongst a sloth-worshipping tribe he stumbled upon during his journey in search of the magical forest of Himmapan. “I wanted to expand on a part of the previous music video when it shows the tribe worshipping him, almost like an Ari Aster, Midsommer-type dance,” says Phum. “So it’s showing Paul in the trance of that, what he was feeling in that dance sequence.”

 

Intriguingly, Phum opted to convey this chapter of Paul’s story via an instrumental track with no vocals, once again pushing the boundaries of his music in the process. “I’ve done instrumental-heavy music, but always with glimpses of my voice. This one’s purely for people to dance to,” says Phum. “Honestly, if you go through the last fifty of my liked Spotify songs, I would say 45 of them are instrumental music. When I’m looking for inspiration, I try to write lyrics over pre-existing instrumentals, and I wanted to deconstruct that method by, ‘Hey, what if I can capture someone’s attention or move their head along to this three-minute house track that’s guitar-based with some synths?’ It was an interesting challenge, but also fits within the theme of the story.”

 

Regarding the specific influences for “Balter Baby”, Phum says, “I listened to a lot of Modjo, a dance group from the 2000s. I also listened to a lot of Seventies Motown, funk and disco. But most of it was led by the visual, because I directed the ‘The Other Side’ music video and was pretty heavily involved in the animation process for the ‘Balter Baby’ video. So I was thinking of Paul’s story and what particular soundtrack would suit this scene.” Indeed, the music of “Balter Baby” perfectly complements the video that takes us into Paul’s mind as his immersion into this new world that has embraced him sees him grooving along like a retro dance video game character.

 

The choice of “Balter Baby” as a single also further emphasizes the boldness of Phum Viphurit’s exploration on the PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 EP, while still making sense within the context of the project. “I felt like it was going to introduce a new house-inspired song like ‘The Other Side’, I needed a bit of a continuation before I break from that tempo and texture, so ‘Balter Baby’ was the most natural selection to me,” he says. “It’s like, ‘Hey, it’s not just a one-off thing.’ I’m playing with the idea of trance, movement and motifs throughout the whole EP.”

 

The end of the “Balter Baby” video sees Paul Vibhavadi enclosed in a glowing orb as he floats away from that tribe, and the audience is free to draw their own conclusions – or look for more answers when the PAUL VIBHAVADI VOL. 1 drops on October 17. “I know it’s quite a conceptual piece of work, and there’ll be many different interpretations of it,” says Phum. “But I’m so excited to show my creativity and make people feel something again with this next piece of work.”
