From Left to Right: Francis Dayao, General Manager, Off The Record; Ricky Ilacad, CEO and Founder, Off The Record; Roslyn Pineda, General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment; Maan Atienza, Deputy General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment.

Manila, February 12, 2024 - Sony Music Entertainment (SME) Philippines and Off The Record, a Manila-based indie record label known for nurturing Filipino artists, have announced a new product and distribution partnership to further develop and promote Filipino music.

Under the partnership, SME Philippines will distribute Off The Record’s music catalogue globally and work together to build strategies in marketing, media promotion, artist development, brand partnership, and synchronization.

An industry veteran who has launched the careers of the biggest alternative, pop, and crossover artists of the last two decades, Ricky Ilacad founded Off The Record with the intention to harness his market-tested expertise to develop Filipino homegrown talents and accelerate their chances of success in the continuously evolving but globally inclusive music scene.

"We are thrilled to join forces with Off The Record," said Roslyn Pineda, General Manager, Philippines, Sony Music Entertainment. "Ricky Ilacad has a proven track record of success in the music industry, and we share his passion for developing exceptional Filipino talent. The partnership comes at an exciting time for both SME Philippines and Off The Record. Off The Record has recently enjoyed success with releases from newcomer Ica Frias (“Oh Honey”) and breakthrough band Paham(“Ganid”). Autotelic’s Josh Villena also brought his A game to the label’s growing roster of eclectic acts with the release of “Hello” via his music alter-ego totñ. SME Philippines continues to be a leading force in the Philippine music industry, with a roster of top artists, including Ben&Ben, SB19, and O SIDE MAFIA.

RECENT PHILIPPINE VISIT INSPIRES MBNEL “JUST LIKE YOU” RELEASE

February 12, 2024

Stream “Just Like You”- HERE

Watch “Just Like You” Music Video- HERE

Taking great inspiration from his most recent visit to his motherland, Filipino-American rap artist MBNel released his latest single “JUST LIKE YOU” via US label EMPIRE (Tyga, Fireboy DML, Tink, Amber Liu, Alextbh, Afgan).

This new single puts MBNel’s artistry on full display with a unique beat and unapologetic lyrics that perfectly reflects life in Manila for the Filipino masses. In fact, the proud Fil-American rapper features everyday life in the Philippine urban jungle for the song’s official video which was filmed in Manila’s slums and old railways, with MBNel playfully chilling with Pinoy folks and kids in the streets as a proud tribute to his heritage.

JUST LIKE YOU’s music video shows a rather honest depiction of the hard life that Filipinos living below the poverty line have to deal with, which they resiliently overcome day after day by finding reasons to smile, survive, and thrive even amidst dire situations—a typical trademark that Filipinos are known for all over the world. It was a strategic choice by MBNel and his team to show this side of the Philippines instead of the country’s postcard-worthy locations. After all, this particular song is about coming to terms with one’s not-so-good side and dealing with it head-on instead of sweeping it under the rug.

With lyrics such as “It’s crazy I be praying, but I sin too”, the song shows MBNel’s unmistakable Filipino side—a man who prays (how often do we hear “praying” in a rap song?), but is well aware of his sins and makes no attempt to deny them. The line “You broken (tryin’ to) heal too” lets his Pinoy fans know that he empathizes with them, and the song further emphasizes this with the words “I know you damaged, well baby me too” in an honest admission by the rapper that he’s no different when it comes to having problems.

"I’m trying to show that I share some of the same problems that some of my fans might be going through or have been through. This video demonstrates that we are not that different regardless of fame, money or whatever”, shares MBNel.

The celebrated rapper further shares, “I loved coming back to visit the Philippines; my culture is something I’d love to keep learning about and now I want to come back and stay longer.”

JUST LIKE YOU is out now on all digital streaming platforms.

ATARASHII GAKKO! SAY ‘HELLO’ ON NEW SINGLE, “HELLO (FROM THE TIGER’S APPRENTICE)”

February 9, 2024

(Photo Credit: James Baxter — download HERE)

Tokyo-based and wildly special four-girl progressive pop-group ATARASHII GAKKO!share a euphoric new single, “HELLO (from The Tiger's Apprentice)” via 88rising. On “HELLO (from The Tiger's Apprentice),” ATARASHII GAKKO! embrace an empowered punk-inspired sound with suave lyricism and greetings in several languages, including German, Japanese, Chinese, English, and Spanish. Set to striking percussion and super guitar riffs, ATARASHII GAKKO! welcome fans and demonstrate their global appeal in any language, wherever they are.

The song is notably a main fixture of the TheTiger’s Apprentice film soundtrack, entitled ‘The Tiger’s Apprentice (Music From and Inspired By The Motion Picture),’ which features songs from various artists including: ATARASHII GAKKO!, ZHU, Audrey Nuna, Cacien, and more. The soundtrack will be released on 88rising Music.

Stream new single “HELLO” HERE

Watch the “HELLO” visualizer HERE

Stream the Soundtrack HERE

The new music follows on the heels of a highly successful year and start to 2024. In January they unveiled “Toryanse,” a play on the classic Japanese nursery rhyme. Last October, they unveiled “Tokyo Calling,”  a reflective single about the harsh monotony of daily life in Tokyo which opens with a doomsday-like alarm. It was met with critical acclaim upon release and ATARASHII GAKKO! made their US late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with the song (watch HERE). The group also showcased their inimitable performance style on their first worldwide SEISHUN Tour, which sold out completely in the U.S., and at music festivals like Mexico City’s Corona Capital Festival and 88rising’s New York and Los Angeles iterations of the Head In The Clouds Music & Arts Festival. This year ATARASHII GAKKO! plays their first-ever Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with sets onSunday, April 14 and 21.

ATARASHII GAKKO! (literally meaning “new school” in Japanese) are a group of four young women who are redefining what it means to be a girl group. While most J-Pop female idol groups are known for their squeaky high voices, perfectly synchronized dance moves, feigned images of purity and innocence, and an excessive drive to always be kawaii (cute), AG! isn’t into any of that. They wear sailor-fuku (sailor suits) uniforms in a style that were worn by Japanese students back in the 70s and 80s with long skirts and pulled-up socks, and staunchly refuse to be objectified. Their aggressive and expressive dance moves, which they choreograph themselves, are a hybrid of the energy of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal headbanging, and hip-hop street dancing. Musically, AG! brings together elements of modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, rap, punk, dance music, but it would be pointless to try to categorize them in any genre.

Denise Julia and DENÈČ team up for the first time on R&B jam "don't matter"

February 9, 2024

The empowering track showcases the duo’s effortlessly sultry side while maintaining their individuality throughout the process.

Filipino R&B stars Denise Julia and DENÈČ link up on the soulful, sultry jam “don’t matter”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

The track marks the first time that the two rising phenoms worked together for a music project. In an Instagram post last week, Denise Julia confirmed that the idea of collaborating with each started three years ago, when they were just trying to make it big in the music scene.

Produced by J. Greg, Duaneinsane, and Denise Julia, and composed by the latter with DENÈČ, “don’t matter” finds them trading verses over a delicate, laid-back groove.

With Denise Julia’s powerhouse vocals blending perfectly with DENÈČ’s sensual coos in the most exciting way possible, the song transforms into a charming, sing-along bop that’s centered on empowerment, freedom, and self-love—three virtues that triumph over the prospect of everything going wrong in a leap of faith.

The arrival of “don’t matter” comes off the heels of the duo’s recent accomplishments for their music releases: Denise Julia becoming the most streamed Filipino female artist for several months, thanks to the enormous success of her 2023 EP, Sweet Nothings (Chapter 1), and DENÈČreaching more than a million monthly listeners on Spotify on the strength of her acclaimed crossover album, LOVES7AGE.

A week ago, Denise Julia dropped the music video of her new single “Sugar n’ Spice.” Helmed by award-winning filmmaker Samantha Lee, the visuals depict sweet sapphic moments that a lot of adolescent queer women can relate to, regardless of category and experience. To date, the music video has racked up nearly four hundred thousand views on YouTube in less than a week, and has peaked within the top 10 of the video sharing platform’s ‘Trending for Music’ charts.

DENY on the other hand, has wrapped up 2023 with a record-breaking milestone. Her new album, LOVES7AGEwas a hit among fans and critics and even yielded memorable hits such as “Alam Ko Na,” a collaboration with Just Hush and Third Flo’, and the Arthur Nery-featured “Sabik.”

Both OPM darlings have set their personal bests on creative and commercial terms while maintaining their individuality in an overly saturated and hyper-competitive musical landscape.

Denise Julia and DENÈČ’s “don’t matter” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

Spence Lee Drops Electrifying New Single andCinematic Music Video - "Foundation"

February 7, 2024

Watch here

“Foundation” artwork. Download here.

Spence Lee, the rising Hip-hop star from New Jersey, is set to make waves with the release of his latest single and music video, "Foundation." Following the success of his recent tracks, "Spend My Days" and "White Tee," the artist delves into new territory with "Foundation," where he metaphorically asserts his dominance and showcases his musical genius.

The song's inspiration stems from Spence Lee's personal values, as reflected in lyrics like "God and my family is my foundation, I don’t make any moves out of desperation." This thematic core not only influenced the title but also forms the bedrock of the artist's creative expression. In a musical landscape often saturated with superficiality, Spence Lee aims to lay down the foundation of authenticity and substance.

"Foundation" is a unique blend of impactful and meaningful lyrics coupled with a boastful flair. The vibe of the song is designed to uplift and energize listeners, making it the perfect workout anthem or club hit. Spence Lee's ability to seamlessly blend powerful messages with a catchy beat showcases his versatility as an artist.

The melodic and dark beats of "Foundation" were crafted by a powerhouse trio – Lifted of the Eardrummers, MaxFlames, and Lucian. The result is a classic southern slow trap beat with an Asian flare. The rolling bass, melodic undertones, and mysterious ambiance create a sonic experience that perfectly complements Spence Lee's lyrical prowess.

Stream “Foundation” here.

The accompanying music video, shot in Saigon, Vietnam, and directed by Jason Ano, is a visual spectacle. The breathtaking scenery of Saigon serves as a backdrop to high-energy scenes featuring motorcycles, boats, fire breathers, and traditional Vietnamese choreography in the heart of the city. Spence Lee is seamlessly integrated into the vibrant culture of Saigon, surrounded by locals embracing their heritage.

The music video goes beyond the ordinary, featuring stunning artistic imagery of Spence amidst ocean rocks and traditional Vietnamese dance sequences. The striking visuals serve as a testament to Spence Lee's commitment to showcasing the spirit of Vietnam and his own cultural identity.

Watch the “Foundation” music video here.

The single's artwork is a heartfelt tribute to Spence's grandmothers, both of whom recently passed away. The imagery features Spence in an Asian jungle, with his grandmother depicted as an angel protecting him. This visual element adds a personal touch to the release, reinforcing the emotional connection between the artist and his art.

"Foundation" is not just a song; it's a statement. Spence Lee is carving his niche in the music industry, combining meaningful narratives with visually striking content. As he steps into the spotlight with "Foundation," Spence Lee invites listeners to join him on a journey of self-discovery, cultural celebration, and musical innovation.

Revisit the timeless appeal of Rivermaya’s Greatest Hits: Himig Ng Dekada 90

February 5, 2024

A top-tier collection of the band’s most iconic alt-rock anthems, the compilation album is the go-to playlist to hype OPM fans for their reunion concert on February 17, 2024 at the SMDC Festival Grounds

With timeless pop-rock anthems that cut across generational lines, Rivermaya has easily cemented their place as one of the most important Filipino bands of all time. Their songs have served their purpose as great anchors for intimate conversations and as a source of comfort for every Filipino yearning for music they can call home.

More than their wistful and sometimes introspective reflections on love, pain, freedom, and youth, Rivermayapenned music with a mix of unwavering earnestness and vulnerability, capturing the essence of everyday life in nuanced but relatable terms.

The band’s iconic lineup from 1994 to 1998, which includes Bamboo Mañalac, Mark Escueta, Nathan Azarcon, and Rico Blanco has produced some of the most enduring classics in Pinoy rock. From the chest-thumping sing-alongs of “Hinahanap-Hanap Kita,” “Elesi,” and “Ulan” to the stadium-sized glory of “Awit Ng Kabataan” and “Kisapmata,” from the melancholic balladry of “If,” “Panahon Na Naman,” and “214” to the cult appeal of “Bring Me Down” and “Luha,” the popular four-piece act achieved commercial success while delivering groundbreaking cultural impact and artistic vision in equal measure—something that has proven to be elusive, even among their contemporaries in the field.

Their legacy, which shaped the ever-fickle pop culture of the ‘90s with their distinct brand of eloquence and charm, is fully captured in their essential Rivermaya - Greatest Hits: Himig Ng Dekada 90 album, which chronicles the biggest hits of their formative years as well as the underrated tunes that still hold merit up to this day. Featuring twelve of their most iconic songs and two remixes, the compilation album gives listeners a complete picture of the band’s music: fearless in its humanity and imperfection, but smugly cool in portraying tenderness, chaos, and adventurousness in situations that don’t always feel like they’re made for the movies. It’s as real as it gets.

“There are powerful messages in the songs, for those who need to hear them,” drummer Mark Escueta reflects on the compilation album’s intrinsic appeal. “Overall, it’s fun to listen to the songs, even the sad ones. We’re honored that we get to share our music and inspire people on a personal, intimate level. We no longer own these songs; they belong to anyone who dares to wholeheartedly embrace them and still emerge whole from the process. It’s everyone’s songs now.”

With Mañalac, Escueta, Azarcon, and Blanco headlining a reunion concert on February 17, 2024, at the SMDC Festival Grounds, Rivermaya’s Greatest Hits record serves not only as a convincing argument for the band’s inimitable genius but also as a guide to the immortal music that’s so deeply ingrained in Pinoy collective consciousness. For long-time fans who would want to deep-dive into the band’s discography and review their career-defining ‘karaoke’ jams, this compilation album is the way to go for the essential no-skips fodder.

Here's the track list to get you started:

1. Hinahanap-hanap Kita

2. Ulan

3. 214

4. Elesi

5. Himala

6. Awit Ng Kabataan

7. If

8. Kisapmata

9. Panahon Na Naman

10. Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo

11. Bring Me Down

12. Luha

13. 214 (Tripnotic Mix)

14. Kisapmata (Mayhem Mix)

Rivermaya - Greatest Hits: Himig Ng Dekada 90 is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Entertainment.

The original lineup, composed of Bamboo Mañalac, Rico Blanco, Nathan Azarcon, and Mark Escueta, stages a one-night-only reunion concert produced by Live Nation Philippines. Dubbed ‘Rivermaya The Reunion,’ the iconic pop-rock outfit will be celebrating the unparalleled Rivermaya legacy with a highly anticipated set featuring some of their greatest hits and rarities. Tickets are available on the Live Nation Philippines website and SM Tickets outlets.

AFGAN: The global superstar and pride of Indonesia, releases “Shallow Water,” the first single and video from his upcoming English album, Sonder, which will be out later this year via EMPIRE.

February 5, 2024

The global superstar and pride of Indonesia, releases“Shallow Water,” the first single and video from hisupcoming English album, Sonder, which will be outlater this year via EMPIRE.

“Shallow Water” music video — “Shallow Water” streaming link— assets folder

Afgan —one of Indonesia’s brightest stars— releases his new single and official music video “Shallow Water.” Out today via EMPIRE, the emotionally charged ballad will appear on Afgan’s forthcoming English album, Sonder. A deeply personal release for Afgan, “Shallow Water” explores how past traumas can hinder a relationship and how the fear of making mistakes can prevent a relationship from evolving into something deeper. Speaking on the song’s inspiration, Afgan shared, “this fear of fucking things up arises if we went in too deep in the relationship. Cause it definitely doesn't feel like shallow waters and you tend to get overwhelmed and drown in the emotions.”.

Listen to “Shallow Water” here and watch the official music video here.

Afgan is set to make his U.S. concert debut later this month with headlining performances at Elsewhere in New York City on February 15th and at The Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles on February 16th and 17th. The February 16th show sold out almost immediately and a second date has been added by popular demand.

Afgan has been redefining Indonesian music on the global stage with his commanding vocals, emotionally charged songwriting and R&B sensibilities. Over his illustrious career, he’s built a massive passionate fanbase of nearly 20 million followers across his social media and hundreds of millions of streams across his music catalog. His 2021 groundbreaking album, WallïŹ‚ower —his first English project and foray into the global pop market— spotlighted his influence and opened new doors for the Jakarta-based superstar. It earned #1 on Netease International Chart and landed on 10 Spotify New Music Friday Playlists. The album’s top singles, which included “M.I.A” featuring Jackson Wang, “Touch Me” (Remix by Robin Thicke), “Say I’m Sorry,” and “If I Don’t Have Your Love,” have generated more than 40 million streams. As Afgan’s star quality continues to take stock internationally, he sets the stage for Sonder, his most personal body of work yet, which is set to be released later this year.

Afgan, the shortened moniker for Afgansyah Reza, grew up in Jakarta, as a shy individual, finding solace in music and honing his natural talent in the privacy of karaoke rooms. His mother’s love for powerhouses like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Brian McKnight would come to shape his vocal style— he would imitate these artists, practicing their belting and runs. One day, serendipitously, a label VP overheard Afgan’s captivating rendition of John Legend’s “Ordinary People” during a karaoke session and offered him a record contract on the spot. Afgan released his debut album, Confession No.1, in January 2008 and since then, has become an influential, beloved name in Asian entertainment with eight solo albums under his belt. Known for his soulful, buttery vocals, coalesced with R&B and ballad roots, Afgan has headlined arenas throughout Asia, including at Java Jazz Festival, Joyland and PESTAPORA, and toured 60 dates in 2023 alone. His dynamic performance extends from the stage to TV and film, such as the popular Korean reality series, Tripmate: Who Are You. He’s collaborated with fashion brands, like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Coach and Kenzo, and with artists such as B.I, Jackson Wang, Robin Thicke, and Raisa. Most recently, two of his singles, “Panah Asmara” and “Lenggang Puspita,” went viral on TikTok with millions of videos created. As he embarks into his next era, a year that’s already brimming with promise, including a world tour and a new album in motion, Afgan is unabashedly him.
