Filipino band of Mercury rides the soul train with ease in new single “That’s Why”
The track pays tribute to the bygone era of Motown, classic R&B, and funk while giving it a more contemporary feel
Filipino alternative pop/soul trio of Mercury introduces a fresh and exhilarating era with the release of their new single “That’s Why”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.
Updating their sonic direction with bits and pieces of retro-soul, Motown, and ‘70s funk, the band pays tribute to the sounds of a bygone era while taking listeners on a luscious blast of timeless grooves and smooth-talking.
“In terms of direction, we think that we’re in a phase where we want to try out new things and discover what else we can pull off together, regardless if the sound is different from the other previous releases we had. And we’re enjoying having to flow around wherever we go,” shares the multi-faceted, genre-blurring band. “That’s the essence of what of Mercury really is, just like the liquid element.”
According to the press statement, “That’s Why” was written in hyperbolic terms as their own way of sharing the most illogical, non-feasible reasons for loving a person, be it your partner or significant other. A love song in its purest form, the soulful track rides the romantic train with smooth production courtesy of frequent collaborator knōwmaadand guitarist Luigi Aganinta, and a swoon-worthyarrangement that brims with skill, class, and discipline.
“The whole band with knōwmaad wrote the lyrics, and I guess it was inspired from my own perspective on my love for my wife,” of Mercury’s Nathan Huang shares. “Originally, the title ‘That’s Why’ came from knōwmaadwho gave us a file of production ideas titled daswhy.”

AXEAN Festival, the acclaimed annual regional music festival, will be taking place in Singapore on 28 and 29 October this year. Alongside live music performances by renowned and up-and-coming acts from 10 different countries across Southeast Asia and the rest of the world, the festival is partnering with a wide variety of craft beer, food, and art vendors from Southeast Asia to give festival-goers a fully immersive experience, fostering a spirit of community and collaboration. This year’s edition of the festival places extra emphasis on Asia’s indelible food culture with exclusive forward-thinking dishes inspired by flavours from across the region and a diverse range of beverages via the festival’s curated Beer Village.
This iteration’s performers include 🇲🇾 Malaysia’s cultural icons Masdoand Zamaera, renowned lyrical storyteller Taba Chake from 🇮🇳 India, feel-good alt-rock band Helsinki Lambda Club from 🇯🇵 Japan, and many more.
The festival is now operating on a pay-cos-you-want system with a 250% tax-deduction for donations over SGD 100 through its charity partner FOUNDATION MUSIC, in the hopes of making the festival accessible to as many people as possible. Donations from the public allow the independent festival to continue its annual efforts to elevate the best music in the ASEAN region, accelerating the artists' careers and launching them on a global stage.

Apart from Singapore-based organizations, France will be the first European country invited to present an artist - Sūn Jùn, a young French emerging musician, composer, and producer. The Embassy of France will also run a dedicated activation space to promote French music industry initiatives in Asia, where festival goers will be invited to discover French sounds throughout the broadcasting of What the France music playlists and to meet and exchange with French music experts and companies based in Asia.

Actor and singer-songwriter Neo Rivera reassureslisteners of God’s comforting love in his newest inspirational single produced by Reverb Worship PH titled,Alam Ko—out now on all digital streaming platforms worldwide!
Originally written as a “rant” song, Neo penned Alam Koin just 10 minutes, which flowed from a night of intense emotions, feelings of isolation, and the weight of being left behind. That was when critically acclaimed songwriter and music producer Kikx Salazar stepped in and urged him to re-write the song, but this time, from God’s point of view.

ADB Capital Management Reforms Unlock $100 Billion in New Funding Over Next Decade to Support Asia and the Pacific
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (29 September 2023) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) today approved capital management reforms that unlock $100 billion in new funding capacity over the next decade to address the region’s overlapping, simultaneous crises. The expansion of available funds will be further leveraged through mobilizing private and domestic capital to move from the billions to trillions required to tackle the climate crisis.
The reforms were introduced through an update of ADB’s Capital Adequacy Framework (CAF). They expand the bank’s annual new commitments capacity to more than $36 billion—an increase of approximately $10 billion, or about 40%. The expansion is achieved by optimizing ADB’s prudential level of capitalization while maintaining its overall risk appetite. The reforms also create a Countercyclical Lending Buffer to support ADB developing member countries (DMCs) facing unexpected crises.
The measures, which will enable ADB to provide up to $360 billion of its own financing to its DMCs and private sector clients over the next decade, are designed to ensure ADB maintains its AAA credit rating and its ability to provide DMCs with funding at low cost and with long maturities. The reforms further safeguard ADB’s AAA credit rating through the introduction of a recovery plan that would prevent capital erosion during periods of financial stress. ADB’s capital adequacy framework is reviewed every 3 years.
“These important reforms will significantly expand ADB’s ability to support a broad range of critical development efforts across Asia and the Pacific, including greater concessional resources for our vulnerable members,” said ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa. “Our decision today is part of ADB’s response to the call for multilateral development banks (MDBs) to do more with our resources and faster. These resources will help the region manage a complex set of overlapping crises, address gender inequality, and provide for basic needs in the context of the existential challenge of climate change. This extra lending power will be extended and leveraged further by renewed efforts to mobilize private and domestic capital and maximize the impact of our work.”
Private capital mobilization will play a critical role in leveraging billions to trillions, by expanding private sector involvement in the development agenda. Upstream actions will help improve macroeconomic policy and the institutional and enabling environment for private sector investment, spurring increased domestic and foreign investment. Midstream advisory support will help create project pipelines and prepare bankable projects that can attract private sector investment. Downstream financing will be structured to crowd in private capital in development projects, including de-risking for the private sector. Upstream enablement, and mid and downstream mobilization, will leverage ADB’s balance sheet, multiplying the resources available for the region’s development.
Economies must also mobilize more tax revenue, modernize tax authorities through digitalization, and cooperate to ensure a fair and well-functioning international tax system. Domestic resource mobilization is vital in the effort to address debt sustainability and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. ADB established the Asia Pacific Tax Hub in 2021 to provide an open and inclusive platform for strategic policy dialogue, knowledge sharing, and development coordination among ADB, its members, and development partners.
Asia and the Pacific’s poor and vulnerable are acutely exposed to escalating and interconnected crises that jeopardize their health, educational outcomes, and livelihoods. An estimated 155 million people, or 3.9% of the region’s population, lived in extreme poverty in 2022 and many, in particular women, face a cost-of-living crisis that has made food and other essential commodities and services unaffordable.
The updated CAF is the latest of several initiatives by ADB to increase its lending capacity. In May, ADB established the Innovative Finance Facility for Climate in Asia and the Pacific (IF-CAP), which allows donors to guarantee parts of the existing sovereign loan portfolio on ADB’s balance sheet, thereby releasing capital for new climate projects. ADB has also entered into sovereign exposure exchange agreements with other MDBs to reduce portfolio concentration risks and leads the MDBs’ participation in the International Finance Facility for Education.
ADB is committed to achieving a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, while sustaining its efforts to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.

The Itchyworms to embark on a 3-city tour in Japan next month!
The Itchyworms have recently announced their three-city tour in Japan this October 2023!
The mini tour will kick off at the LIVE HOUSE GATTACA in Kyoto on October 6, followed by two more stops in Osaka(The Blarney Stone and Sengokudaitouryou) on October 7 and 8, respectively.
Prior to the announcement, The Itchyworms performed at the Tokyo Beyond Festival on November 22, 2022. They have also participated at the Kansai Music Conference in a virtual setting while delivering an exclusive live performance at the Big Baby Studios in Manila.
“There will be a lot of Filipino fans who will travel two or three hours just to see us live, so we will still be playing some hits,” the Di Na Muli hitmakers share in a collective statement. ‘We will also be playing some other songs that we think will be appreciated by the Japanese musicians and audiences. We feel that music is universal, and whether we sing in Filipino or in English, the audience will love it.”
The acclaimed band, consisting of core members Jazz Nicolas (lead vocals, drums, piano, keyboards, keyboards), Jugs Jugueta (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), and Kelvin Yu (bass guitar, backing vocals), will be joined by their new recruits Ciudad’s Mikey Amistoso (acoustic guitar, keyboards, backing vocals, tambourine) and WecklMercado (lead guitar, backing vocals) for this particular tour.
This year, The Itchyworms have released two new singles: “Panic In My Mind,” which was specifically written for their bandmate Chino Singson, who moved to Canada with his family to start a new life, and the Beatles-inspired “The Morning After,” which features some of their most intricate productions to date.
The Filipino alt-rock outfit has also released 2013’s award-winning album, After All This Time on vinyl last November 2022, and a repress of their 2021 album, Waiting For The End To Start on the same format. Both records are available via Backspacer Records.

Club Mild confronts past mistakes and regretson new single “Sun Gazer”
Previously known as M1LDL1FE, the Singaporean alt-pop trio embraces the next chapter of their music career with a balance of rhythm and introspection

Manila, Philippines — Singapore-based indie pop trio Club Mild confronts impermanence with regret and meaninglessness on their latest single, “Sun Gazer.” Weaving a tapestry of introspection that resonates on multiple levels, the indie pop anthem combines vivid lyrical metaphors with funk guitars and pulsating electronic beats—a musical ode to facing mortality, embracing meaninglessness, and the overwhelming power of being the author of your own life.
According to David Siow, the band bassist, “Sun Gazer” was inspired by the feeling of being wracked with regrets that you end up “going around in circles” and “contemplating about bad life choices.”
Siow adds, “At the same time, you worry about making the same mistakes in the future. This back and forth between past regrets and fear of the future overwhelms you. It’s like staring at the sun, thinking you’ll find safety if you can find the edges. You end up in this hollow state of “not living”. Yeah, it’s about that, but with dancing.”
With a chorus that beckons, "I wanna go back and undo the things I’ve done," the song captures the sentiment of being paralyzed by the weight of past mistakes. But amidst this introspection lies a spark of hope, a yearning to transcend the confines of regret and find forgiveness within.
The song is written and performed by Club Mild, and produced by Malcolm Besley, a record producer, songwriter, and mix engineer who is also the drummer of Northeast Party House, a Melbourne-based electronic indie band.
“We’ve always been fans of this band called Northeast Party House; we even covered one of their songs once,” shares Siow. “So when Paddy found out that their drummer, Malcolm Besley, was their main producer, we reached out, did the Zoom calls, and got to work. Malcolm is brilliant; he managed to make all of the elements of Sun Gazer really slap!”
Formerly known as M1LDL1FE, the eclectic Singaporean band has performed in the Philippines twice, sharing co-headliner billing with Deafheaven and Delta Sleep on 2018’s All Of The Noise and performing as one of the guest international acts at last year’s GNN Year End Show in 123 Block.
