P-Pop girl group YARA reimagines Sexbomb Girls’ “Bakit Papa?” with a contemporary R&B makeover

YARA’s version of the novelty hit is produced by Thyro Alfaro, the award-winning composer behind some of the biggest OPM hits

P-Pop powerhouse YARA reimagines the glory era of Y2K music with a modern update on Sexbomb Girls’ signature hit, “Bakit Papa?”—out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

Paying tribute to the novelty classic that ushered in a new wave of all-women, sing-and-dance pop groups, YARA gave the song its smooth makeover with a synth flavor on top.

“This version of ‘Bakit Papa?’ is more R&B-leaning,” shares the four-member girl group. “It has a sensual feel, matched with sultry choreography.”

YARA’s contemporary spin on “Bakit Papa?” is co-produced by reliable hitmaker Thyro Alfaro, who is responsible for some of the most memorable chart-toppers of the last decade, including hits from Sarah Geronimo, James Reid, and Sam Concepcion. Alfaro worked with John Paul Soliva on the arrangement and Niño of Popinoyon the production side, while taking into consideration the artistic direction that YARA wanted to achieve for this particular track.

The result is an R&B bop that is just as captivating and exciting as the original but distinctly aligns with the Filipino girl group’s brand of sass.

YARA takes pride in being more involved when it comes to the creative aspects of music-making. In “Bakit Papa,” they worked closely with Sony Music Entertainment to bring their vision into reality.

“From styling to choreography, from coming up with promotional strategies to executing the material, we collaborated with our label to ensure that we get the best results possible,” says the ADDA artist.

The release of “Bakit Papa?” comes with a performance video that highlights the unapologetic fierceness of the song. The visuals also feature a choreography that adds a sensual dimension to the mix while delivering fun and nostalgia at the same time.

YARA is a four-piece girl group composed of Gelou, Rocher, Christa, and Kim. They’re one of the newest P-Pop acts under Sony Music Entertainment, which includes SB19, 4th Impact, and more among its top-prized talents.

Filipino singer-songwriters raven and Angela Ken teams up on “Pangako,” a song about life-long commitment and everlasting love

The song is co-produced by acclaimed young artists Tim Marquez and Zild, and written by raven himself

Angela Ken and raven, two of the most promising singer-songwriters in the country, have recently linked up on a new song that expresses the joy of feeling secure about one’s relationship and wanting to make life-long plans with the person you love.

Aptly titled “Pangako,” the soaring ballad finds the two Filipino artists exchanging vows of commitment with earnestness that speaks to an entire generation of listeners—young or old, and everything in between.

“It’s about being ready to love that special someone for a lifetime,” raven explains. According to the young bedroom pop act, the song was made for two committed individuals who are both on the same page, celebrating one another and having each other’s backs even in times of frailty.

“I was inspired specifically by my Tito’s wedding when I wrote it,” he shares. “It’s my dream to make a song that goes well with an SDE video: a soundtrack that complements a couple’s montage, all while bringing the sugary feels in one go.”

The original version of “Pangako” was produced by raven with the assistance of his mentor, Rico Blanco. Acclaimed artists and producers Zild and Tim Marquez came into the picture for the duet version and added layers of newness and intricacy to the production. The result is a heartwarming ballad that brims with intricate harmonies and gorgeous instrumentation, painting a picture of romantic bliss, the youthful kind.

“it’s not the typical arrangement that you would normally hear in my songs,” Angela reflects. “And I guess that’s where the magic appears: the intricate details that the producers incorporate in the song and the way they preserved the inherent simplicity of what made it stand out, on a lyrical and emotional level. This collaboration is really for the books.”

Both raven and Angela Ken have gained significant attention at the height of the pandemic, sparking the curiosity of casual music fans with their brand of relatable songwriting and pop-infused melodies. Angela rose to prominence with 2021’s “Ako Naman Muna,” which racked up more than 40 million streams on Spotify alone, while raven’s steady rise in the music industry and incredible musical instincts captured the attention of Rico Blanco, which resulted in bagging a management deal with Balcony Entertainment and a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment.
