Filipino singer-songwriter BenjPangilinan drops music video for “Love, That’s Rare”

The nostalgic MV was conceptualized by Benj himself and his sister, Hannah

Filipino singer-songwriter Benj Pangilinan is the newest recording artist this year to be launched under Sony Music Entertainment—home to some of the biggest acts in the country, including P-Pop royalty SB19 and multi-awarded band Ben&Ben.

Serving charismatic flair with undeniable vocal chops, the promising star has shown immense promise with the release of “LOVE, THAT’S RARE.” The track serves as his official single under the international record label, and is co-produced by Grammy-nominated Xerxes Bakker(Imagine Dragons, Snoop Dogg).

The release of the electro-pop ballad is accompanied by a music video directed by Filipino filmmaker Gilb Baldoza, who has done important work for fellow recording artists such as Julie Anne San Jose and Rico Blanco. The main idea behind its visuals was conceived by Benj and his sister Hannah.

“We wanted to try our best to tell a story that made people see a different side of Love and all that it brings,” the alt-pop prodigy explains. “Working with Direk Gilb was super fun. His energy is infectious. I learned so much from him on the process of what it takes to create a short film.”

Despite coming from a lineage of well-respected entertainers, Benj Pangilinan wants to be known for bringing his personal stamp to his own art. Not worried about what other people think, the multi-hyphenate artist is keen on redirecting his focus on making music that represents his own vision.

I'm not trying to impress anyone,” he admits. “I guess I just try to focus on being as authentic as possible to shine His light on others.”

GNN Pop takes concert-goers on a nostalgia trip with Kyla and Jay R reunion concert

Manila, Philippines, July 5 2023 (6 pm) – GNN Pop, a subsidiary of the Manila-based events, PR, and multimedia outfit GNN Entertainment Productions, has recently announced its debut offering for 2023.

For its inaugural edition, the pop-focused entity takes concert-goers on a nostalgia trip with the return of Filipino R&B royalty, Kyla and Jay R to the big stage.

GNN Events Director Marie Lara Pauline Bobier reveals that the concert aims to celebrate Kyla and Jay R's versatility and chemistry as musicians and performers. “The setlist will be a collaboration between the core production team and the two R&B royalty, putting a premium on songs that defined their iconic status, while also challenging them creatively to the best of their abilities. This is a very important project for us, GNN, as this is our first pop concert. We promise that Back in Timewill be an unforgettable reunion for all of us."

Made possible by two of the most iconic voices in OPM, Back In Time: Kyla and Jay R The Reunion Concert will take place on September 2, 2023 (Saturday) at the New Frontier Theatre in Cubao, Quezon City.

The highly anticipated show aims to bring Y2K vibes back to life with soulful collaborations, captivating numbers, and show-stopping vocal performances. It also marks the tandem’s 20th year of creative partnership, which spawned numerous sold-out concerts, top endorsement deals, and chart-topping hits such as “Let The Love Begin,” “Undeniable, “Say That You Love Me,” and “Back In Time.”

During the intimate press conference held at the Empty Stomach and Lounge Bar in Taguig City on July 5, 2023, Kyla expressed her excitement about working with Jay R again for this special project.

Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai: A Colorful Tale Filled with Valuable Lessons

The lumpiang shanghai is a ubiquitous part of Filipino gatherings. Because physical gatherings were prohibited during the pandemic, families have recently celebrated their special occasions with a bang. Since they have all missed each other’s company, they prepare food which will surely delight the guests. Lumpiang shanghai is a popular dish because it is relatively easy to cook, it is tasty, and it can be eaten both as a finger food and as a viand. Personally, I enjoy eating it after all the celebrations are over. I reheat them in the microwave, and taste the love behind every roll. it is really a party in every bite.

Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai by Nina Diaz Puyat is a beautiful tale about Pia and Loom. It may be a children’s story, but it also has valuable lessons for adults. We live in a very divided society, and being united for a noble cause is what we need to advance as a nation. The legend tells of natural calamities such as food shortages due to storms. It was the need for food that drove Pia to beg for provisions from the queen, and it was also what led to the creation of the famed lumpiang shanghai. Without spoiling the story for those who have not read it yet, I must say that I found it touching and very relevant. I also found the illustrations by Sean Erwin Santia charming. This book is also told in both English and Filipino, making it the perfect gift for Pinoy kids both here and abroad.

I highly recommend this book to both the young and old. It is a simple and poignant reminder to unite for the betterment of our country. It is also a reminder that food unites us all, and there is nothing better than a gathering with lumpiang shanghai to suppress hunger and to bring people together.

Beyond Sketches and Structures: One Long Dedication to the God, Ultimate Architect

Architecture is a field that marries art and science. It takes skill and expertise to design buildings that can shelter people and serve communities. I have the privilege of being friends with architects, and their meticulous dedication to their craft is truly admirable. This is why I was curious about the book Beyond Sketches and Structures: Prayers and Verses for Design and Construction by Emilie Tiburcio Garcia. I have never encountered an architecture book before, so I was in for a treat. And even if I am not particularly religious, I was drawn to the prayers which were composed by the author for architects, construction workers, engineers, and everyone in the Built Environment, Design, and Construction industries. There is also ample space for personal reflections and photos of the construction stages, such as project groundbreaking, topping out, and completed project. There is also a space for the photo of the project blessing, which is a reminder to dedicate the completed work to the Ultimate Architect, God. 

The photographs by Carlos Pasicolan Garcia evoke Old World charm and European class. It made me feel like I was taking a mini pilgrimage across Europe. The accompanying scriptures were tastefully selected and appropriately placed with the corresponding photos. All in all, the book is more than just a prayer book, but a long dedication to God and His wonderful designs.

I am pleased to recommend this book not just to those who are in the field of Architecture, but also to those who are curious about the craft and are dabbling in its allied fields. It is also not exclusively for Roman Catholics. Churches have a universal appeal, for they remind us that design can be used to glorify God and his heavenly power. It is up to us to not just pray while reflecting on the scriptures in this book, but also to dedicate all our work to the Lord. Now that we have this book in circulation, I hope that more authors will write books on prayers for various professional fields. I am excited to see this genre grow.

LOIR’s debut EP, Chapters exhibits emotional maturity beyond years

After dropping ethereal tunes that capture the struggles of youth in the most genuinely honest way, Filipino recording artist LOIR is now ready to open up old wounds and deliver an unsparing narration of her teenage life in her debut EP, Chapters, out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

The 7-track EP, which exhibits a knack for confessional songwriting and tender, spacey production, reflects emotional maturity beyond her years. In moments when the soulful newcomer needed some rescuing, she wasn’t afraid to examine her decisions in life with both sides of the coin: never consumed by ego, but instead, looking for answers with a hopeful, open mind.

“Chapters represent the ups and downs of my life,” the young singer-songwriter explains. “I’ve learned along the way that sometimes, it’s okay to pause and embrace defeat.
