At 15, you could find SK8 in his room writing lyrics, and by his sophomore year, you could find him handing out CDs in high school. The 23-year-old moved to Los Angeles from Omaha, Nebraska, and linked with the venerable Taylor Gang, first breaking into the mainstream with his gold-certified single, "Like That," with Jack & Jack and opening for revered rap icons like Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, and Rae Sremmurd. SK8 began building a dedicated fanbase of dreamers who related to his message of seizing every moment long before his eventual move to LA. Shortly after founding his own imprint - Alignment, and formally signing a joint venture with Atlantic Records via James McMillan's ART@WAR, SK8 released his major label debut EP, sk8sounds, which was buttressed by the standout singles "Omme (feat. Wiz Khalifa)," "XXX" and "Mood (feat. YK Osiris)." Filipino bedroom-pop soloist raven relives teenage romantic encounter in new song “Sinta”

Filipino singer-songwriter/producer raven expresses affection towards his special someone in the new single “Sinta,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

According to raven, the song is inspired by slice-of-life anime shows and his personal encounters with love.

“On Sinta, I’ve traveled back in time to relive some of my most memorable romantic experiences,” narrates the Balcony Entertainment act. “It’s my way of honoring teen love in its purest form.”

The bedroom-pop heartthrob exudes a breadth of impressive musicianship with his mix of buoyant melodies, irresistible rap verses, and lighthearted arrangements.

As expected, raven channels his vibey, chill side in a song that sounds delightfully homemade, but certainly isn’t lacking in charisma and confidence.

“Sinta” is written, produced, mixed, and mastered by raven himself, with guidance from Rico Blanco, his constant mentor and idol.

“Sir Rico helped me polish the material without sacrificing what makes it a standout,” shares raven. “He was generous enough in sharing his ideas and suggestions when it comes to music.”

To date, raven has more than 15 million streams on Spotify across all credits. In 2021, he released his acclaimed EP, Lika Na, which features his signature hit “Paraluman,” and “S.U.K.I.”

Filipino newcomer Benj Pangilinan steps into the spotlight with debut single “Love, That’s Rare”

The eclectic pop track is penned by Benj himself, andproduced by Grammy-nominated artist Xerxes Bakker

Benj Pangilinan forges his own path in the music industry as one of Sony Music Entertainment’s newest recording artists in 2023.

Coming from an esteemed lineage of established actors, music icons, and prominent entertainers, the promising newcomer is keen on proving skeptics wrong with an impressive debut that digs deep into young romance and nostalgia.

His new single “Love, That’s Rare” gazes wistfully at the complexities of love while acknowledging its effect on shaping one’s worldview—for better or worse. Benj wrote a song that transported him back to a specific time and place, helping him make sense of the conflicting emotions he was experiencing at the time.

Benj recalls how immediately comforting the experience was, after meeting Xerxes for the first time. “There was an immediate click. After some conversation, you already knew the visions were aligned. In terms of a production standpoint, it's all about coming to a mutual understanding of the vision for the song and developing that trust with each other.”

Discussing ‘Tension’, Kylie says,
 
“I started this album with an open mind and a blank page. Unlike my last two albums there wasn’t a ‘theme’, it was about finding the heart or the fun or the fantasy of that moment and always trying to service the song. I wanted to celebrate each song’s individuality and to dive into that freedom. I would say it’s a blend of personal reflection, club abandon and melancholic high.”
 
Kylie has worked with a number of producers on the album with seven of the tracks being produced and co-written with her long-time collaborators, Biff Stannard and Duck Blackwell. 

Discussing the recording process, Kylie says,
 
“I loved being back in the studio with my collaborators but was also able to benefit from remote recording, which we have all got used to – my mobile studio never left my side for a year and a half ! The album is a mix of songs I have written and songs which really spoke to me. Making this album helped me navigate challenging times and celebrate the now. I hope it accompanies listeners on their own journeys and becomes part of their story.”

Indonesian singer-songwriter Kara Chenoa is coming to Manila

Aside from performing at The Rest Is Noise 36 this Friday, Kara Chenoa is set to release his new single “Lifetime,” featuring Filipino R&B star Jason Dhakal

Jakarta-based singer-songwriter Kara Chenoa is set to make a gratis appearance in Manila for the upcoming The Rest Is Noise 36 (TRIN36) on May 26, 2023, at the Balcony Music House, Makati City. The award-winning Indonesian artist will be joining some of the most esteemed acts in the country, such as actor/rapper Elijah Canlas, hip-hop duo BLKD and Calix, dance-rock outfit Pedicab, and acclaimed electro-pop star Ena Mori, to name a few.

Kara Chenoa is currently in the Philippines for a series of engagements, including a music video shoot for his collaboration with Filipino alt-R&B artist Jason Dhakal. The two acts are teaming up on “Lifetime,” a soulful and heartfelt tune about the potential for a lasting connection. Conveying one’s romantic connection to someone special, the song presents the protagonist’s desire for a bond that transcends time and dimensions, wondering if the feeling is mutual.

“The song emphasizes a willingness to break societal norms for love,” describes Kara. “Despite acknowledging the limitations of time, the characters in the lyrics are patient and willing to wait for the right moment. ‘Lifetime’ captures the longing, hope, and commitment associated with building a meaningful and enduring relationship.”

The upcoming single will serve as the focus track of his sophomore EP titled Green Banana, due to arrive on June 30.

The Only Child Is Not Kawawa

“𝘈𝘺, 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘬𝘢 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘢 𝘬𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘬𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘥!” This is a phrase that I have been hearing all my life.

Whether from people who personally know me or people who have just met me, this phrase is always their chosen icebreaker for me. It doesn’t matter if they have said it before. It also doesn’t matter if they knew my life and my background. They will still tell me that I am supposed to be pitied because I lack siblings.

Dear reader, it is time to stop calling the only child 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢.

I usually hear on AM radio and on TV dramas that people without siblings are 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢 because they are all alone. I beg to disagree. As an only child, I never felt alone. I never considered myself to be alone.

In fact, I recognized my own agency at an early age thanks to my circumstances. Being without siblings has taught me to fend for and depend on myself for company, peace of mind, and stability. I never sought out companionship because I knew that I had myself.

I also did not have any problems making friends because I was confident enough to converse with others thanks to my wide exposure to books and movies. I was interested in other people because I had a curious mind.

In school, I did not feel awkward because I was there to learn. The friends I gained along the way were there because we had common interests. So, I have myself to thank for my own self-assurance.

I also learned to overcome challenges and learn from my failures because I had a high standard for excellence. I did not fear failure, because I only competed against myself and not with siblings.

I must say that the stigma against my being an only child translated even until I joined the workforce. I was questioned about having no siblings in job interviews, and I told them all that I was not a spoiled child. I knew what I wanted and what my goals were, so I might have been mistakenly perceived as spoiled. But I never thought of myself as one.

I worked doubly hard for everything because I was the only child in my family. It was solely my responsibility to make myself and my parents proud. So, I am not kawawa because I do not have siblings to pressure me to succeed or make my way into the world. I only had myself, and I am fortunate enough to grow up knowing that I wanted to write and publish books for a living.

Now that my dreams are coming true, I can say that I am lucky that I worked hard and followed my heart. I am not 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢 because I have direction in life, and I made it all happen for myself.

So, if you know someone who does not have siblings, stop calling them 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢. It is a backward mindset that unfairly stereotypes people.

People should be appreciated for their skills, values, and strengths. They should be seen for how they overcome challenges and how teachable they are. Everyone should be able to make their own way into the world.

It is time to move forward from the stereotype that the only child is 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢. The only child is strong, capable, and determined.

No one deserves to be called 𝘬𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘸𝘢 simply because of their solitary order in the family.
