Yamakawa Saturday

I ordered lunch and dinner from Instagram food delivery shop Yamakawa Kitchen. They only deliver on Saturdays, so I made sure to stay home for my weekend Japanese food fix! As usual, they did not disappoint.

Their gyudon was delicious! It was just the right balance of flavors, and their onsen egg gave the dish restaurant-quality sophistication. It went well with black coffee.

For dinner, I had their recently-launched katsu sando. It was delightfully filling. Their katsu was thick and juicy. It tasted like asado, which I liked! All in all, 10/10.

To get your Japanese food fix at home, order in advance from Yamakawa Kitchen! I am one satisfied customer.

Journaling Workshop

I am a firm believer in paid workshops because it is human nature to consistently practice something that has been bought with hard-earned money. I joined a paid journaling and memory keeping workshop by local journal maker and YouTuber V of Noted Journal PH. I wanted to restart my journaling journey but I needed some help, so I enrolled in this afternoon webinar for some inspiration.

I received the journal kit prior to the workshop day itself, so I was able to get acquainted with the journal and its vegan leather cover that will be my emotional dumpsite in the coming months. During the workshop, I discovered that I am more of an essay-type diarist. I express myself better with words rather than photos. I may have this blog to document my everyday life, but there is something magical about putting words on to paper. The art of letting go with a pen and notebook is therapeutic, and I am happy to rekindle this habit during the pandemic.

To be honest, the past few weeks have been challenging. I was getting cabin fever, and my partner who lives in another city had the dreaded Covid-19 virus. While he did not need to be hospitalized, it was still a tiring ordeal. We had to keep our relationship alive through video calls and chats. While we were able to lean on each other during these difficult times, I wanted to strengthen my emotional ability through journaling. I noticed a positive change already in the two days that I have been journaling, as I realized that I can control my emotions through daily journaling.

Let me end this blog entry with the output I made during our journaling workshop. I do not normally use photos and stickers on my spreads. It was refreshing to change my journaling style for a day and meet fellow diarists. It is also nice to meet V virtually and interact with her! I am really grateful for this experience and I hope that similar opportunities will be available in the future to develop my passion for journaling.

This post is not sponsored. I am just a happy Noted Journal PH customer! To support V and her brand, visit her website, and learn how to journal via her YouTube channel.

What I Love About R2R

Rags 2 Riches has recently emailed its subscribers a set of questions to probe what they love about their brand. I have been a longtime fan of this brand, so this is an interesting exercise for me. Here’s what I have to say about R2R.

My first R2R piece was purchased from Firma in 2008. It was a clutch designed by local fashion icon Rajo Laurel. I used it during my first job at a bank, and it held my makeup and toiletries. It was neon pink, and it was woven by a mom at Payatas. It was one of the first local brands that included a hand-signed card by the artisan who made the item. It touched my heart, and as a fresh college graduate, it helped pave the way for my career choices and eventual foray as an online distributor for another social enterprise, a position that I hold to this day. It also gave me a tangible link to the impact of my buying power to a community, however small that purchase may be.

My favorite R2R purchase is the Noah Fanny Pack because it was the bag that I wore to conferences at ADB and while my terminally-ill father was confined at the hospital. I brought it with me from meetings to fora, and from my father’s chemotherapy sessions to my trips to buy his necessities at the pharmacy. It was also special because I purchased this bag at the R2R HQ, which I documented in this post.

R2R launched a clothing line, and I bought a couple of pairs of shorts from them last year. I enjoyed these pairs because they went well with my cropped tops, and even my favorite t-shirts.

I think their clothing line deserves to be praised for their efforts to use upcycled fabrics and include indigenous weaves in their designs. However, as someone who does not like ruffles and ribbons, perhaps a more edgy collection would attract a new set of customers to try their clothes.

My favorite R2R memory would be that time when I bought a pair of flats made of the signature R2R basahan (rags) weave and indigenous textile. I felt so stylish during that day! Those shoes are still wearable to this day after five solid years of wear.

My dream is for R2R to continue growing despite the challenges of the global pandemic. I may have stopped purchasing from them due to some budget constraints of late, but my R2R face masks and filters remind me everyday that this brand may have started from rags, but I watched them grow to riches. I have grown up since their humble beginnings, and I hope that God will bless me with work and opportunities so that I can continue buying from brands such as R2R and support communities in the process.

God bless you, R2R!

Fibi Candy Body Jewelry

I recently purchased a titanium navel barbell from local shop Fibi Candy Body Jewelry. Their selling point is their anodizing service which they currently offer for free with every purchase of their titanium jewelry. This gives their customers the option to have colorful bling composed of a safe, implant-grade metal.

Since I was feeling fancy, I chose to have my selection anodized in light blue. I was not disappointed, and I loved the result!

You may also purchase your own implant-grade titanium body jewelry from Fibi Candy! Simply go to their Shopee page and chat with the seller to specify your chosen color for your jewelry.

Stay safe and healthy!

Noted Journal Workshop Kit

I recently registered for an Online Memory-Keeping Journal Workshop with local maker Noted Journal PH. The webinar will be held on the 22nd of May, and I can’t wait! The fee comes with a kit that contains Noted Journal’s famous handmade vegan leather journal, sleeve, washi tapes, stickers, and ephemera.

I love journaling, especially bullet journaling. I have been a Noted Journal client since October 2020.

I must admit that the pandemic has been tough to deal with at times, so a little spice to my everyday journaling would help. Also, I look forward to meeting new friends.

If you are interested to join the workshop, you may visit Noted Journal PH’s website.

Happy journaling!

Quielle x Sailormoon

I recently purchased this Quielle x Sailormoon necklace from their Shopee store. I love this item because it reminds me of my childhood.

I reminisce about those times when problems seemed to be solved by powers that were manifested from the moon or planetary forces. Now, we are faced with a global pandemic. This necklace offers a sparkle of hope amidst these uncertain times. Also, it’s a cute way to support local.

You may buy this necklace via this link. You may also check out their Shopee store for more locally-made stainless steel jewelry.

Stay safe, everyone!

Iconic Filipino singer-songwriters to take the virtual stage for ‘ALPAS’ concert

Acclaimed and award-winning solo artists Ebe DancelJohnoy DanaoBullet DumasBarbie AlmalbisAia de Leon, and Kitchie Nadal are coming together for a virtual concert that offers an exciting music experience at the comforts of every music fan’s home.

Literally defined as “breaking free,” ALPAS is a digital show produced by kumu, an online community platform for livestreamers, and GNN Entertainment, a Manila-based music events and PR agency. The event is a flagship effort between the two producers to keep the live music scene alive while public life is on lockdown.

With new security and health protocols in place, the virtual showcase will be shot in advance somewhere in a ‘familiar’ music venue that serves as second home to a lot of progressive-leaning acts and independent bands, and in Spain, where one of its artists, Kitchie Nadal is currently based. Expect the iconic singer-songwriters to perform their biggest hits and rarities in a stripped-down format, and collaborate for a special ‘medley’ number arranged by renowned musical director, Ronaldo Tomas.

“Music feels more essential than usual in the time of pandemic,” kumu Live Events Manager Lorraine Alelisshares in a statement. “It’s quite challenging to find a sustainable workaround to help artists connect with their fans and implement welcoming developments in the virtual concert space. ALPAS is our way to support the live music scene as we transition into the new normal. Thanks to GNN, we’re given an opportunity to push boundaries, build a system around it, and help more people in the concert industry who have lost jobs.”

ALPAS marks the first time that the six top-notch performers will be equally headlining a show after having performed as solo acts or part of a collective. Through the years, the singer-songwriter trio (Ebe Dancel, JohnoyDanao and Bullet Dumas) have staged three-peat sold-out concerts at the Music Museum (2x) and Kia Theatre (1x) in 2015, 2016 and 2018 respectively, while the queens of alternative rock (Aia de Leon, Barbie Almalbis and KitchieNadal) have performed as a group in two sold-out concerts at the Music Museum in 2016 and 2017, and a benefit virtual concert in 2020 to raise funds for the employees of indie music venues in Metro Manila. All these shows were organized and produced by GNN Entertainment.

The online show is slated to premiere on June 5, 2021 from 6pm onwards. Tickets for ALPAS are now available for purchase via kumu, with a price of P499 for general admission. For details on how to buy tickets, go to this site: www.kumu.live

Tamago Sando PH

I had a lovely snack earlier, as I had Tamago Sando PH’s Tamago Original (Php190) sandwich. Inspired by the sandwiches in Japanese konbini or convenience stores, their take on the classic snack is spot-on. It is filling and tasty. It is worth the delivery charge from Makati to QC as my family definitely enjoyed our orders.

For orders and inquiries, you may visit their Instagram page.

Enjoy!

dia maté teams up with IV of Spades’ Blaster Silonga on new single “Dream”

Promising newcomer dia maté dials down the R&B melodrama for a luscious summertime tune that is built around laid-back melodies, indie-pop influences, and tropical-sounding rhythms.

Written by mate herself and produced by IV of Spades’ Blaster Silonga, “Dream” explores the hesitation of commitment and moving forward despite falling in love with someone. According to the 19-year-old artist, the song was inspired by how people sometimes close themselves off subconsciously to protect their heart from the trauma induced by past relationships. “That’s what ultimately holds us back: the fear of being let down again,” the young singer-songwriter says. “Dream essentially describes wanting to wake up from the past, to pretend it was only a dream.”

Upbeat melancholia

dia maté originally penned and produced the demo for “Dream” on guitar, but the rising pop/R&B star eventually wanted to revamp the track with a more upbeat and energetic vibe to complement the melancholic appeal of her lyrics. That’s where Blaster Silonga and Sam Marquez from One Click Straight came in as producer and sound engineer respectively, bringing the vision to life with charismatic flair that reflects maté’s personal branding.

“It started through zoom meetings with Blaster and text exchanges back and forth to discuss what we were going for production-wise,” the Island Records recording star shares in a statement. “Thankfully, we had the same vibe in mind: a more indie-pop/band type production. Blaster also had other great ideas so we rode along with that. Sadly. due to the situation now, we couldn’t meet up to record the song so I recorded all of the vocals in my room. After that, he sent the song to be mixed and mastered by Sam.”

H&M Summer Campaign

“Dream” is currently making rounds as a featured song on H&M’s Summer Campaign and as part of the “Best of H&M Philippines Store” playlist. Mate shares, “It feels surreal, really. The wonderful team at Island got me this collaboration and for that I am so grateful. I’m so happy that I was able to create a song that perfectly fit the summer vibe they were looking for.”

dia maté also reminisced about her childhood, walking into an H&M store and wanting to buy everything in sight. “H&M was always one of the first shops I’d walk into at the mall. In regards to style and values, H&M aligns perfectly with mine. I’m happy that I can shop sustainably and know that I’m paying for good quality.”

“Dream” is available now on all digital platforms worldwide via Island Records Philippines. Watch H&M’s Summer Campaign feat. "dream"

Ben&Ben paint breathtaking imagery of young love on new single “Upuan”

It’s official: Ben&Ben have finally released “Upuan,” the first single off their upcoming sophomore album to be released under Sony Music.

Written in 2019, in Dumaguete upon arrival at the hotel after one of their shows, their new song takes a nostalgic look on young love, and as Ben&Ben describe it, “the palpable romantic tension that arises from friendships that are formed by sitting next to each other, and the adventurous conversations that ensue.”

Lyrically, “Upuan” draws breathtaking imagery that interprets gestures in such lifelike ways, capturing a play of details with romantic earnestness. The band points out, “we incorporated a more visual style in the song, painting a picture for the listener and transporting them to that familiar place, of falling in love with someone they just met, whether that is in a classroom, by the beach, at a restaurant.”

It helps that they’re painting a picture in the listener’s head with ethereal arrangements and soaring choruses that swirl beautifully against a backdrop of naturalist setting: samples of birds singing, the swoosh of the waves, and even the conversation of the trees. There is magic in the way Ben&Ben fuse all these elements together to create a cinematic landscape punctuated by poetry and inventiveness. It’s effortlessly picturesque, while employing a level of commitment to make the audience feel like they’re part of the experience, as if tapping into something personal and is of utmost importance to their being.

In a joint statement, the nine-piece collective said that the music of “Upuan” was conceived during a random jamming session with no prior agenda as to how it would sound. “But to our surprise, that first jamming brought about the soul of how Upuan sounds now. The earthy, ethereal soundscapes, and that sense of sonic adventure came from the fact that we just moved in together, and being in a new place surrounded with summer vibes and nature elements, helped shape our expression of our new song. We feel very blessed to be close to nature in this season and it’s almost like a tribute to their beauty that we included them in the song.”

Written and produced by Ben&Ben, co-produced/mixed by Jean Paul Verona, and mastered by Leon Zervos, “Upuan” was recorded in the band’s home studio. Verona and sound engineer Sam Marquez helped in the recording process, giving the song its final touches.

The acclaimed hitmakers are also currently working on their second album. “Since the production of this song, we're continuously working on all the other songs that will complete it. We're really pushing forward in terms of experimentation and diversity of sound in the songs.”

Ben&Ben’s “Upuan” is out now on all streaming platforms worldwide via Sony Music.
