Catriona Gray, Noel Cabangon, Juris, Keiko Necesarioand more artists join forces in the star-studded “Bagani” music video

Several Filipino artists from all over the country have banded together to record “Bagani,” the official theme song to celebrate the 500th year anniversary of Victory of Mactan and the Philippines’ role in the first circumnavigation of the world. 

The music video, which is officially out today, Friday at 8:00 PM, features an all-star performance from an ensemble put together by PhilPop and The National Quincentennial Committee, with the help of Jude Gitamondoc of Kadasig and Jeremy Sarmiento of MinPop.

Aside from the appearances of more than 50 artists, who took their time recording and filming themselves in makeshift studios remotely or at home, the music video helmed by Josh Olasiman, also includes various footage from Medical City c/o Kevin Tristan A. Espiritu, and documentary films such as Jose Rizal sa Landas ng Paglaya and May Pagasa ang Bantayog ni Andres Bonifacio.

Commissioned by The National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) to give its audience a feeling of hope and optimism, the song was written and composed by Roel Rostata, arranged and produced by Jungee Marcelo, with Visayan lyrics in the chorus by Jude Gitamondoc.

Honoring solidarity and bayanihan spirit during tough times

According to its chief songwriter, Roel Rostata the track was written as a response to the growing challenges that the Filipino people are experiencing during the time of the pandemic, and how important it is repurpose music as a vessel to champion resiliency and bayanihan spirit. “There's no other way to rise above and make it through this pandemic other than working together,” Rostatashares in a statement. “Bagani encourages the listeners to turn fears and doubts to hope and healing, to manifest dreams into reality and to embrace victory. The song also encourages listeners to be part of the solution despite all the negativity and problems.”

“Bagani” is a by-product of PhilPop Bootcamp 2019, an initiative that aims to empower the next generations of contemporary Filipino singer-songwriters. PhilPopExecutive Director Dinah Remolacio shares that the song was recorded for the Quincentennial celebration, but its inherent meaning has expanded into honoring our collective optimism and teamwork to rebuild the nation, and bring to light stories of optimism and resilience. “Eventually, the song became larger than what it was originally intended for,” Remolacio shares. “It triggers a strong commitment to the past and our future. It evokes strength and at the same time— solidarity.”

As part of the multiple virtual celebrations commemorating an important milestone in Philippine and global history, the music video marks the partnership between NQC and PhilPop to mark the 500th anniversary of Victory of Mactan in 2021. 

Under the partnership agreement, the country’s premier songwriting competition serves as the screening committee responsible for picking the official theme song, as well as co-producing its official music video with Warner Music Philippines.

Israel Promotes Urban Gardening on Earth Day

The Embassy of Israel in the Philippines, in cooperation with MASHAV and the City Government of San Juan, celebrates Earth Day 2021 by promoting urban gardening among the youth. A total of 280 vegetable kits were distributed to various elementary and secondary public schools in the city through this project.

Ambassador Rafael Harpaz said that the vegetable kit encourages the young generation to grow their own food in the comfort of their backyards. “The COVID-19 pandemic limits the youth to stay at home. Planting is a fun and exciting activity they can do with their family.” Ambassador Harpaz added.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora extended his big thanks to the initiative of the embassy. He mentioned as the guest speaker that promoting urban gardening promotes environmental awareness and protection, as well as food security. He also looked forward to inviting Ambassador Harpaz to visit the homes of the children in San Juan once their vegetable garden grew.

Ms. Cecille Carandang, San Juan Schools Division Superintendent, said that the project gives hope and inspiration to the youth of the city and is a step closer to a sustainable and Earth-friendly environment.

MASHAV, Israel’s agency for international development cooperation under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel is active in supporting worthy endeavors. The urban gardening project is part of the cooperation between the embassy, MASHAV, and the local government of San Juan. 

Among the public schools that participated in the said project are: San Juan National High School Senior High School, San Juan Elementary School, San Perfecto Elementary School, Salapan Elementary School, Pedro Cruz Elementary School, Pinaglabanan Elementary School, West Crame Elementary School, Kabayanan Elementary School, Sta. Lucia Elementary School, and Nicanor Ibuna Elementary School.

Chen Pangan is poised for crossover breakthrough with the release of debut single ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’

Filipina singer-songwriter Chen deserves to be someone to keep an eye on this year. As the lead guitarist and one of the vocalists of Unit 406, the rising pop sensation has enjoyed a bit of success with decent-sized hits such as 'Kahit Na Anong Sabihin Ng Iba' and 'Tanghaling Tapat,’ which eventually earned her band a nomination for Best Performance by a New Group Recording Artist at the 2018 Awit Awards.

This year, Chen is poised to take on a new role as a solo artist with the release of her debut single, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ under MCA Music Inc. 

Delivered with soulful, emotive vocals and heartfelt songwriting style, the song dips into stripped-down pop territory before its colossal reveal in the chorus. “Nangangarap kung maibabalik sasimula lahat / uulitin ko, ‘di nagsisisi sa iyo,” she sings as if coming from a place of immense longing and grief.

According to Chen, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ is a song that speaks of one’s yearning for love. “It's about loving someone without being loved back and eventually accepting reality and choosing to let go,” says the talented newcomer. “And it’s also about deciding to turn the page and move forward.” 

Chen explains that the recording process behind ‘Sana’y AlamMo’ went smooth despite the challenges of having to internalize the emotional component of the lyrics, while allowing herself to feel its pain. “The experience working with Gab and Tiny was super chill and fun,” Chen shares. “There was never a time that we had to unplug or revise. Everything just flowed very well.” ‘Sana’y Alam Mo’ was composed, arranged, and produced by Gabriel Tagadtad, with additional production by Tiny Corpuz.

At present, Chen is busy exploring her creative potential with and beyond her band, Unit 406. She’s confident with the kind of music that she wants to dabble into, and as showcased in her first solo single, ‘Sana’y Alam Mo,’ the much-buzzed star is more than ready to take any challenges that will come her way. “What separates me from other artists is the tone and personality my music brings,” she tells in a statement. “In contrast to hugotsongs, ‘Sana'y Alam Mo’ has this R&B flare that is snappier than your typical love songs. Zack Tabudlo scores No.1 hit on Spotify Philippines and YouTube Trending charts with “Binibini”

The Andrea Brillantes and Seth Fedelin-starred music video racks up more than 5 million views to date.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter/producer Zack Tabudlo has all the reason to celebrate as ‘Binibini’ takes the No. 1 spot on Spotify and YouTube Trending charts.

The Dan Villegas-helmed video, which stars Andrea Brillantes and Seth Fedelin, has amassed over 5 million views on YouTube, making it one of the most viewed Filipino music videos this year. 

According to the ‘Nangangamba’ hitmaker, the music video was a product of collaboration between him and Dan Villegas’ team, running back and forth with the main concept and eventually coming up with an intriguing premise to spice up the narrative. “The video was reversed in post,” Tabudlo shares in a statement. “It shows how ending something that makes you happy wants you to go back from the very start. I also had to memorize my song backwards 200x the speed to get that smooth slow-mo effect, while singing the song as the rain goes upwards. It also gives you a vague ending that is open topersonal interpretation.”

Tabudlo is also grateful to have worked with top actors Andrea Brillantes and Seth Fedelin, who both delivered exemplary performances as a young couple caught in a romantic disarray. “Working with them was pretty cool! I never really worked with big names in the acting industry before, so seeing them shoot the scenes especially the dramatic ones gave me goosebumps. You can really see the difference of real actors that can make a story come to life.”

Over at Spotify, Zack Tabudlo’s ‘Binibini’ remains the biggest song in the country, peaking at No. 1 on the streaming platform’s Top 50 charts a day after the music video was released. 

His other song, ‘Nangangamba,’ which was recently announced as the main soundtrack to the IdeafirstCompany’s sci-fi romance drama, LOVE VS. STARS, is also the No. 1 track on both Spotify’s Global Viral 50 chartand Philippines Viral 50 chart. It’s also currently the second-highest streamed domestic track after ‘Binibini’ on the said platform.

Mangkakahoy Table

We have been on quarantine for more than a year now, so I invested in a sturdy standing desk from Mangkakahoy. I got the medium because I crochet while working on my laptop. I have been previously typing on top of a pile of books and boxes so this is definitely an upgrade. The desk is well-made, and it feels sturdy. Virus Shawl

I just finished crocheting this virus shawl! I followed the pattern from Jonna Martinez on YouTube. I used gradient cotton yarn from Baguio Yarns by Miss Crochet A Lot, double pull. Then, I used a 4mm Tulip hook from craft fave Oh My Yarn.

This has been my favorite crochet project so far. I finished it in only a week! The virus pattern was named as such as the shawl builds its height quickly, and the pattern is simply fun to work with. It was the perfect quarantine project.

AJ Mitchell is primed for stardom with electric new single ‘Stop’

Ace Banzuelo conquers the insurmountable with trap-infused pop single “Mayari”

Manila-based singer-songwriter/producer Ace Banzuelohas captivated music listeners from all over the world with his introspective fusion of electronic, hip-hop, indie, and pop music. His earlier singles “Himala” and “Malayo,” both released in 2020, have amassed a combined 4 million streams on Spotify alone, making him one of the most exciting new solo acts in recent memory.

According to Banzuelo, the trap-infused synth pop tune was inspired by the goddesses and characters from the Filipino mythology, using it as a metaphorical springboard to essay his personal take on romance, toxic masculinity, and privilege. “The song's approach to the myth discusses how wrong arrogance and privilege is when used as aleverage to attracting someone,” the young hyphenate shares in a statement. “The song questions toxic masculinity in a relationship as it is inspired from the war between the God of the sun, and the Goddess of the moon. In the song, the girl finds interest in one guy, and comfort to another. The main reason for their conflict is miscommunication.”

Written and produced by the artist himself, the song attests to his openness to discuss personal issues from a socially aware lens, cutting out the posturing for a message that is universally relatable and morally responsible. Banzuelo points out, “I'm proud that the combination of my way of storytelling and deep involvement with my art gives my audience a full different experience. I'm continuously growing as an artist, and I'm very, very specific with what I want to create and how it should be presented.”

On a production level, “Mayari” sparkles to life with its amalgam of chillwave textures, ‘80s-sounding synths, hip-hop/R&B verses, and modern trap beats, concocting a version of bedroom pop music that yields ecstatic returns. “Mayari has a very diverse arrangement since it starts with a slow verse, an engaging chorus followed by rap verses and a synth solo,” Banzuelo adds. “I produced the song by using digital vintage synthesizers with modern minimal trap beats on top. I think what makes it contemporary sounding is my way of using consistent modern sonic textures in my songs: a cross between the past and the present, just like how I made the concept of the song's story.”

“Mayari” is the last song off Ace Banzuelo’s thematic streak of melancholic pop tracks—a prologue of some sorts that aims to introduce his work to the general public. Crochet Bralette

I just finished crocheting this bralette. I followed the pattern by Shyler Crochets, and this video tutorial really took me from total wearables noob to novice in no time. I used one ball of Oh My Yarn Cotone Medio yarn in tree, and a size 5mm hook.

I highly recommend this pattern if you are also dipping your toes into the world of crocheted wearables. It is easy to follow. I was able to finish it in a couple of days.

Easy Shawl

I recently finished crocheting this shawl using a yarn cake from Baguio-based brand Crocheted by Carisse. I used a 4mm hook and followed the Easy Crochet Shawl pattern by The Craft Nut.

These are challenging times, as Covid-19 continues to become a threat. The pandemic has hit me closer to home, as familiar names have become Covid-19 positive in the past few weeks. Because of this, I am doing my part by praying for their speedy recovery, observing social distancing and sanitizing whenever I am out for essential errands, and staying home.

Crochet has become my therapy of sorts, and I highly recommend this hobby to anyone who’s looking for something to do while in quarantine.

Zack Tabudlo’s ‘Binibini’ serenades us with a reimagined kundiman

Zack Tabudlo is rewriting kundiman with a contemporary pop flair on his latest single, ‘Binibini,’ out today on various streaming platforms via Island Records Philippines/MCA Music Inc.

Symbolizing love as dance, the young producer/singer-songwriter penned ‘Binibini’ at the peak of a romantic relationship with a former flame. “She was the binibini that I would dance with in the middle of the rain, in the middle of a chaos, or whatever’s happening around us,” Tabudlo references the inspiration behind the song. “I would dance/love her no matter what.”

According to Zack, ‘Bininibi’ is more than a simple crush, or a cliché situation. He likens the song to the mutual connection between two persons romantically swept away with each other, but are “waiting for the right moment to say what they feel.” 

Tabudlo reflects, “Despite of what everyone says or what problems the two of you are facing in life, the both of you will be there for each other and will always be behind each other in every situation there is.” His new track ‘Binibini’ encompasses that kind of reassuring love that goes beyond idealistic.

Musically, “Binibini” incorporates a touch of kundiman with a modern singer-songwriter flair, capturing a uniquely arresting sound that tells a story from a confessional standpoint: raw, earnest, and teeming with emotional honesty. Zack Tabudlo is an alt-pop RnB artist from Manila, Philippines. He hit the ground running when he began his music career, becoming a finalist for reality talent show Talentadong Pinoy at the age of 10. He was a contestant for the voice kids season 1, and had a stint as a member of youth singing group GRAVITY, and one half of teen pop duo Zack and Fritz.

When it comes to music production, Zack has certainly earned his stripes. Under the mentorship of Jonathan Ong and Chris Anthony Vinzons of Sonic State Studio, Zack continued to hone his techniques and sensibilities. He was also mainly mentored by Cleng Saturno – son of VehneeSaturno.

Viral Rico Blanco TikTok gets reimagined by producer/singer-songwriter raven

Rising producer/singer-songwriter raven teams up with indie pop artists Naila and somere on the new single “S.U.K.I.”—released today via Sony Music Philippines.

The lo-fi jam, which was produced by raven and Rico Blanco, takes into account the pain and longing of someone who gave his all, but failed miserably to mend what’s left of the romantic relationship. Collaborators Nailaand somere, who also provided their lilting vocals to the insanely catchy bop, are also credited as songwriters for this special project featuring different generations of musicians.

Putting together the entire song is interesting from a production standpoint, as it started from a random challenge posted by alternative rock icon Rico Blanco on TikTok, where he played a piano while beatboxing for others to explore with either a rap verse or a vocal melody with lyrics. 

Blanco’s captivating instrumental, which only lasted for a few seconds, has racked up over 2.8 million views on the platform since it was uploaded late last year. 

Multi-instrumentalist and singer/rapper raven took the challenge seriously and wrote verses that sting with melancholic thoughts. The genre-bending artist shares in a statement, “S.U.K.I. was actually based from my own personal experience. I wrote it as a tribute to a young love that didn’t end up pretty well, despite trying everything to make it work.”

Up-and-coming singer-songwriters Naila and somerecompleted the musical narrative by writing and singing their own verse on the rap ballad, giving the material a refreshing perspective that complements raven’s bedroompop treatment.

According to 15-year-old artist Naila, her verse was lifted from a poem she personally penned when she was in 8thgrade. “It was when I finished reading a book about a couple with a very tragic love story, I was so attached to it to the point that I even made a poem using the female protagonist’s point of view. I was scanning my old notebooks that time and saw the poem that I wrote. I really wanted to make it into a song and then eventually, Sir Rico’s video showed on my timeline, which gave me an idea of duetting on his video and posting it in TikTok.”

It took 16-year-old artist somere days to think of the words to “S.U.K.I.,” but ended up with lyrics of her own that reflects an important phase in her life. “Things became unfortunate, I had a very bad mental breakdown and words of pain suddenly came out of my mouth. I decided to duet Sir Rico’s video, thinking that maybe someone out there may be going through the same thing, and maybe I can use my voice to give that person a nice warm virtual hug.”

The collaborative ideas led to the low-key gem that is “S.U.K.I.,” which brought an entirely confessional safe space for the artists to bask in their individual pain and come up with a song that could inspire others to move forward and be better.

Its music video, which was shot in a lush greenery somewhere in Tanay, Rizal, features raven enjoying his sweet time outside of the city.

CBN Asia brings you two brand-new films about hope and healing amid the pandemic on its much-awaited Holy Week special – Tanikala presents Habang May Ngayon and Isa Pang Hiling, airing this Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on GMA.

In Habang May Ngayon, seasoned actress Karen Timbol tells the true-to-life story of Carla Manas who battled the deadly virus. As she fell seriously ill, Carla faced harrowingexperiences and fear of death in the shadow of COVID-19.

“Compared to my previous roles, this is something different. What I liked about this character is that, in the middle of the storm, she saw hope,” Karen said.

Thrilled about her first Tanikala role, the actress shared that she could relate to Carla’s journey, “I see myself in her. Whateverhappened to her in the past, she used it for good. Many people went through a lot of challenges during the pandemic, I hope that they will be inspired through this story.”

Meanwhile, actress and beauty queen Lara Quigaman-Alcaraz takes on another challenging role as a mother in Isa Pang Hiling. Lara plays Jarolyn Moulder, whose world turned upside down when her husband and son suffered from COVID-19. 

In utter desperation, Jarolyn pleaded with God to allow her to be infected too so she can stay in the hospital and take care of her son, Vincent. Sandro Muhlach portrays Vincent.

Lara felt the deep connection to her character right off the bat, “We are both mothers who are willing to do everything for our children, to the point that we’ll pray, ‘Lord, let me bear this, please spare my child.’ That’s where I pulled all the raw emotions from. When it’s about our child, we will really cry to God.”

The actress continued, “I was in awe after shooting the scenes because I realized that the story and character I portray happened in real life. So prepare your tissues not only because the scenes are quite tearful, but because you will see how good our God is–how He wants to heal and save us. And you should look forward to that!”

Habang May Ngayon is directed by Joash Bermejo while Isa Pang Hiling is directed by Timmy Yee.

Rising singer/songwriter Destiny Rogers today releases a new version of her debut single “Tomboy” featuring New Jersey rap sensation Coi Leray. 

 This new version follows ignited streams of “Tomboy” after Lisa of K-Pop group BLACKPINK posted a choreographed mini-film entitled “Lili’s Movie” performed to “Tomboy,” which has enjoyed over 39 million views and counting since its release last month.

Following Lisa’s post, Destiny’s single “Tomboy” peaked at #12 on the Spotify Viral 50 Global chart and is currently top 20 on the chart. Destiny connected with Lisa from BLACKPINK directly on FaceTime last night to thank her for the new wave of support for “Tomboy.”
