K-Pop boy group T1419 marks highly anticipated debut with ‘Before Sunrise Part.1’

T1419, the newest nine-piece global K-Pop boy group launching under MLD ENTERTAINMENT (MOMOLAND, JT & Marcus), has finally released their highly anticipated single album, BEFORE SUNRISE Part.1.

BEFORE SUNRISE Part.1 opens with debut single, ‘ASURABALBALTA’—a genre-mashing banger infused with hard-hitting beats and trendy sounds. Sponge Cola releases “Siguro Nga,” a song inspired by K-drama series, Start-Up

Sponge Cola is no stranger to writing music inspired by their love for cinema and pop culture. In fact, the four-piece alternative rock outfit named their debut full-length album, Palabas to acknowledge the compelling impact of shows—be it a theatrical play, a dramatic film, or an episode in a television series—in making us understand our own lives, the lives of those around us, and the lives of people whose contributions to humanity deserve to be celebrated at all cost.

With this creative pursuit comes a tribute to the blockbuster K-drama series, Start-Up, which is currently heaping praises all around the world for its gripping story on young entrepreneurs aspiring to make it big in the competitive world of Korean high-tech industry. Sponge Cola released “Siguro Nga” as a song born out of vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon’s love for Han Ji-Pyeong, a prominent character whose unconventional upbringing and misfortunes in life enabled him to become a principled, self-made man with a tough exterior and unbeknownst to everyone—a tender heart. 

“Immediately after the shock of episode 9, I literally picked up a guitar and began writing the song,” Yuzon shares in a statement. “I didn't know how the story was going tounfold, but at that point, I felt like it wasn't going to work out for Han Ji Pyeong's character. And while heartbreak wouldn't ravage him, it leaves him with an undulating kind of pain.”

“Siguro Nga” builds on this nuanced character study of a man realizing that he’s lost the love of his life, after spending a great deal of time living a lie to protect the person he’s pining for, from emotional harm and trauma. It’s a soaring acoustic number that is propelled by a genuine reverence for empathy and romantic yearning, but never quite reaches a climatic run arrangements-wise, as it ends on a miserable note, with the subject of the song stuck in a rut, hoping to relive his past to undo his mistakes.

According to Yuzon, the song arrived in the middle of recording phase for their forthcoming album to be released next year. “The process was a bit more theatrical than what we're accustomed to,” he admits. “As a singer, I had to be in character, which made the recording process a bit grueling.” In order to capture the very essence of the song, Yuzon had to experience some of Han Ji Pyeong’s crucialscenes in the series, including having to bask in the rainfor minutes and reliving the memories of standing next to a corn dog stall. “I also had to face someone looking at me with ‘those eyes’ while pretending to be fine. Couple that with the idea of multiple takes, it was tiring but ultimately fulfilling.”

Armo Armovit, the band’s lead guitarist explains how the arrangements for “Siguro Nga” came to play. “Like most of our songs from the previous albums, we started by recording a very basic acoustic guitar as a foundation. Yael himself played the rhythm to make it consistent with how he initially wrote the song and his melody. Everything else on top of that are layers of sound to decorate and enhance the song's emotional content.” Bassist Gosh Dilay adds, “We tried some experimentation in terms of overall sound-- but we reserved a version specifically for future live performances of the song.”

“Siguro Nga” was recorded at Love One Another studios, and was mixed and mastered by Joey Santos. Armovit, who praised Santos for doing an excellent job in designing sounds and layering them to tell a story, was very much happy with the final product. “His familiarity with a wide range of music, and ability to create the appropriate textures for the song was a very welcome and refreshing addition to the production process. Everything you hear that isn’t the usual drums, bass, vocals, and guitar are all him.”

BYE2020 just got bigger with more international artists joining the lineup!

In its debut offering, the online concert welcomes critically acclaimed artists from different parts of the world to stand up for solidarity and deliver inspiring performances to help fellow Filipino people cope with the ongoing pandemic.

“It was initially just a pipe dream having international acts perform in BYE2020, but now that it’s happening we couldn’t be happier,” the team behind BYE2020 shares in a statement. “Since this is a virtual event, we wanted to leverage on the uniqueness of the execution and have international artists be part of the event without ever having to step in the Philippines.”

Chart-topping singer-songwriter Jeremy Zucker (US), globalhitmaker Maximillian (DK), soul pop outfit Peach Tree Rascals (US), rising alt-pop artist Tate McRae (CA), and eclectic pop/R&B singer Conor Matthews (US) are set to take the BYE2020 virtual stage, along with more than 30 artists from the Philippines and abroad.

MASHAV Israel Scholars Gift Learning Equipment to Nueva Ecija Schools

Shalom Club Philippines, Inc. – Nueva Ecija Chapter held their annual holiday activity by donating printing materials to three schools in Nueva Ecija, namely: Alberto G. Bautista Elementary School, Maringalo Elementary School, and Puncan Elementary School.

Shalom Club is the international organization of professionals who received MASHAV scholarship training in Israel. The Philippines has produced MASHAV scholars from various sectors through the years.

MASHAV, through the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines, also contributed to the activity by donating printers and additional copy papers to each school. MASHAV Officer Ms. Gladys Baniqued-Turiano represented the embassy during the turnover ceremony of the learning equipment.

The MASHAV scholars provided support to the distance learning approach of the schools due to the pandemic. In lieu of their annual Share-A-Lunch and gift giving with students from the province, Shalom Club opted to adjust their activity based on the needs of these schools.

Israel recently donated learning equipment to the Department of Education of the Philippines to help its continuous efforts in coping up with the pandemic and to aid in providing distance learning to the Filipino students. Israel also built a hand washing facility at Makati High School and Quirino High School to give emphasis on the importance of hand washing in helping control the spread of COVID-19.

Filipino music acts syd hartha, She’s Only Sixteen, and KRNA to perform atMusic Lane Okinawa 2021

The trend of hybrid and online music showcase and conference festivals is set to continue next year with the debut edition of Music Lane Festival Okinawa in Japan on January 16 and 17, 2021 at select venues in the cities of Okinawa and Naha. The foreign lineup and its international conference program—the annual Trans Asia Music Meeting (TAMM)—will stream online for free.

More than 33 Asian music acts will showcase at the festival weekend, with local artists performing in front of live audiences at Sakurazaka Theater, Sakurazaka Central, and other venues in Naha; and Music Town Oto-Ichiba, 7th Heaven Koza, Remy’s, and more venues to be announced in Okinawa City—all of which will implement strict prevention measures against COVID-19. The festival will stream pre-recorded live sets from international artists curated by its partner music organizations from seven countries.

Marking their Japanese debut, Manila-based alternative-folk singer-songwriter syd hartha, alternative/indie rock band She’s Only Sixteen and Cagayan De Oro dream pop outfit KRNAwill represent the Philippines in the Trans Asia Music Meeting “TAMM” Selection Artists showcase. “The Japanese market is one of the most sought-after in Asia and having this platform, this opportunity to have our artists who are primed for a breakthrough is momentous. It allows them to put one foot on the door, so to speak,” The Rest Is Noise (TRIN) co-founder and creative director MC Galang shares. “We are very grateful to collaborate again with our friends and colleagues in Naha in this capacity.” TRIN is a music events producer-slash-online publication and the festival’s partner in the Philippines.

Bilingual pop anthem “Suyo” wins PhilPop 2020Songwriting Festival

The week-long celebration culminated with podcast documentaries, a series of radio guesting, music video premieres, and the annual finals night.

Noah Alejandre and Reanna Borela’s “Suyo” bagged the top prize of the PhilPop 2020 Songwriting Festival.

Conveying the intricacies of romantic relationships amidst language and cultural differences, “Suyo” bested 14 entries from Metro Manila, North Luzon, South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao clusters on the PhilPop Finals Night held online last Sunday, December 20, 2020. The winning song also walked away with the grand prize of P1 million, tax free.

Alejandre and Borela, the composer behind “Suyo,” served as interpreters for their own track under the moniker, reon.

Aikee’s “Bestiny” and Sherwin Fugoso’s “Pahuway” emerged as first and second place, winning P500,000 and P250,000, respectively.

The former entry was interpreted by Kevin Yadao and Jr. Crown, while the latter was sung by Ferdinand Aragon, who composed the PhilPop 2018 runner-up song, “Di Ko Man.”

Breaking Borders

With #MusicBreakingBorders as its newest tagline, PhilPop 2020 is committed to championing the diversity and global appeal of Filipino music across the country. All entries were chosen for their outstanding contribution to the contemporary Pinoy pop canon and its potential in bringing the unique value of Filipino culture and experience to the international music arena.

Despite the challenges of the new normal, the country’s premier songwriting competition managed to step up itsgame by mounting a virtual Finals Night that honors the finest in homegrown pop songwriting this year. 

Smart People’s Choice

A special award called Smart People’s Choice, which was determined based on the cumulative number of streams and views via Spotify and YouTube, was also handed out to the standouts in every cluster: “Kasadya,” composed and interpreted by XT on Sax with Jay-ar Vaño for Mindanao; “Suyo,” composed and interpreted by reon for Visayas; “Para Kay Catriona,” composed by Kulas Basilonia and interpreted by I Belong to the Zoo for South Luzon; “Balikan,” composed by Lolito Go and interpreted by Benj Manalo for North Luzon; and “Huling Sayaw,” composed by Kian Dionisio and interpreted by NyoyVolante for Metro Manila.

Week-long celebration

PhilPop Songwriting Festival 2020 kicked off its celebration with a week-long series of online eventsfeaturing the 15 finalists.

Connect, a digital media agency based in the Philippines, produced a 5-part series called “PhilPop 2020 Podcast.” The digital documentary put a spotlight on the finalists per cluster and the stories behind every song. 

The episodes run for 5 days, from December 12 – 18:

Get in the Christmas spirit with Lilystars Records’ compilation album, IN REVERIE

Philippine indie music label Lilystars Records brings festive warmth to music listeners all around the world with the release of IN REVERIE: A Lilystars Christmas Compilation.

In keeping up with the tradition of spreading Holiday cheers, the 11-track album offers heartfelt music that evokes the reassuring comfort of home and togetherness even in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

According to Clem Castro, the CEO of Lilystars Records, the compilation release is more than just a reflection of longing, hope and love. “It’s a call to keep our spirits alive no matter what we are facing. There are also tracks about celebration, optimism, loneliness and even dismay.” 

While Christmas can mean a lot of things to different people, IN REVERIE: A Lilystars Christmas Compilation isn’t afraid to explore themes that indirectly address the current pandemic situation. “We can’t say if this release will have an impact for those who are having a difficult time with the pandemic, but we are hoping it does make a difference, Clem shares. “This serves as our gift to music fans this holiday season.”

Helmed with Hallmark-inspired melodies, vibrant arrangements, and intimate songwriting, the songs in Lilystars Records’ IN REVERIE offer an alternative listening experience for discerning music fans who want their Christmas jams a little bit on the obscure side. It covers a diverse selection of tunes with genres spanning pop, folk, blues, jazz, indie rock, twee, electronic pop, post-punk, and alternative music. 

Clem admits that there was no selection process for the compilation album. Instead, he challenged some of the artists in the roster to write and produce their own original Christmas songs. “We have a high regard with the capacity of our artists and their contribution exceeded our expectations. We commend their commitment to produce the tracks on their own, either recording at home or with help of friends or people they work with to bring life to their record.”

Eleven artists from Lilystars Records participated in the call for submissions, which is more than enough to complete a proper album. The result is a unique collection of songs, defined by the sound of each artist and their own personal sentiments about the season. The track list includes:

MASHAV Israel Awards Development Grant to MASHAV Scholar

MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation, awarded a financial grant to Ms. Mary Margaret Barro, the Executive Director of Makati Medical Foundation for her SHALOM (Supporting HeAlth Heroes to HeaL as One with MASHAV and MakatiMed Foundation) Peace and Wellness Kits project. Ms. Barro attended MASHAV Course in Innovations in Women's Health held in Israel last 2018.

Psycho-social Support and Psychological First Aid (PFA) are part of the various pandemic preparedness initiatives of MakatiMed Foundation in response to COVID-19, in collaboration with MASHAV through the Embassy of Israel in the Philippines. This project aims to benefit the frontliners from the Philippine National Police, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, and Philippine Navy to help combat COVID-19. 

Present during the turnover ceremony were Mr. Nir Balzam, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Israel; Atty. Backed with infectious, clubby beats and intricate production details, “Matches” sounds prime for top 40 radio and streaming dominance. The song is featured in various New Music Friday playlists across the globe, including the Philippines—one of its formidable markets. The song is currently at No. 2 on iTunes Philippines, while the deluxe edition of the album that it’s part of, has peaked at No. 1 a few hours after the track’s release.

According to Sarah, “All My Sins” was written as response to being haunted by a mistake committed in the past. “For me, this song is about thinking through all of the mistakes you've made and asking the question of, ‘Am I a bad person? Or am I just too hard on myself?’ I'm definitely an over thinker and a perfectionist, so sometimes I find myself in this place,” the songstress said.

The track was conceptualized during the quarantine periodat a time when Sarah was actively seeking potential collaborations on new material. “I really wanted to do a collaboration with another woman, as all of my previous collabs have been with men and just happened to stumble upon syd hartha one night,” Sarah said. “Her voice was so calming and yet also, so powerful and after binge watching all of her videos on YouTube, I just knew she would be the perfect person to help bring this song to life.”

syd, on the other hand, felt apprehensive at first, given it’s her first collaborative project with an artist from overseas. Despite the imminent uncertainty of the pandemic and the significant gap in time zones, the recording process went smoothly. “Working with Sarah has been amazing,” described syd. “She was very welcoming and chill. It’s an honor to work with an artist like her.”

“All My Sins” offers stellar production choices that wouldn’t feel out of place in today’s current crop of hits. Barbie Almalbis honors animal rights advocate onnew single “An AsPin’s Song”

Ahead of her highly anticipated full-length album to be released next year, Filipina singer-songwriter Barbie Almalbis has officially dropped a heartfelt tribute to her grandaunt Nita Hontiveros-Lichauco, or Tata, as she is fondly referred to. Entitled “An AsPin’s Song,” the track assumes the role of a beloved indigenous mixed-breed dog in the Philippines, which has nothing but utmost love and appreciation for the late animal rights supporter and activist.

Having served The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) for the entirety of her life, Tata was instrumental in empowering people for countless volunteer opportunities that involved rescue, protection and sheltering of strayed and abused animals. 

Barbie recalls, “Tata was a gifted musician and a champion for animals. She was the President of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society, which she reorganized in 1986, after having been one of its youngest volunteers in the ’50s. I had always wanted to write the song she requested, but I didn’t have much experience with AsPins.”

Tata passed away at 93 years old last October 2020, and Barbie shares that “there was much outpouring of love from family and friends and people whose lives she touched.” Among those was Barbie Almalbis’ aunt on her husband’s side Alya Honasan—a dear friend of Tata, and a writer/editor who has interviewed the late animal rights champion on several occasions. 

Barbie reached out to her Tita Alya, who herself is an animal welfare advocate and fur-parent to three AsPins: Kiko, Kikay, and Frankie, to write a song dedicated to the late Tata and her immense contribution to protecting AsPins.

The pop-rock songstress recounts the experience of fulfilling her promise to Tata with the help of her family members and Tita Alya. “After a few days, she sent me the lyrics to An AsPin’s Song, and I was so touched by herwords. I wrote a melody, and my band helped me finish arranging and recording the song. Since it was a family project, my husband Martin and our daughter Stina did the artwork.”

The soaring, inspirational anthem was mixed and mastered by Magic Montano, and was arranged, performed, and recorded by Barbie Almalbis herself on vocals and guitars, with her backing band, Jonard Bolor on drums, Karel Honasan on bass, Nikko Rivera on keyboards, and Stina Honasan and Midori Ulpindo on backing vocals.

Good burger date

I had a lovely lunch date yesterday at Shakey’s Katipunan, where I tried their new good burger for the first time. It is their meatless burger which was released just in time for the holidays. The patty is made of soy-based Unmeat, and the potato bun is flavorful. The burger itself tastes smoked and delicious! Overall, it is a great meal and I did not miss meat at all.

This is not an ad. I am just really satisfied. It is truly a good burger. I hope that you will also get to try it for yourself!

The Itchyworms brings festive cheer with “Have A Merry Christmas” and “Maligayang Pasko”

The Itchyworms keeps the holiday cheer going with the simultaneous release of two Christmas songs “Have A Merry Christmas” and “Maligayang Pasko.” In honoring the time-tested tradition of writing Yuletide-themed originals that are meant to bring people closer to home in feeling and essence, the pop-rock quartet is keen on uplifting our spirits during the pandemic.  

Drummer and lead vocalist Jazz Nicolas points out the important of Christmas songs in a very crucial time like this. “We need to be reminded of the joy and hope and the spirit of giving. It’s the time of year when the world falls in love, so it’s important to listen to Christmas songs all year round.” 

Kelvin Yu, the band’s bassist, echoes Nicolas’ sentiments. According to him, Christmas songs are those anchors in our lives that we can always expect to be there for us no matter what the situation is. “There will always be Christmas songs: during good times, it further uplifts us;and during not so good times, it can provide us with that warm hug that everyone needs come December,” Yu shares.

Have A Merry Christmas: A Modern Holiday Standard

According to lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jugs Jugueta, “Have A Merry Christmas” is inspired by a meme featuring Jose Mari Chan, inarguably one of the most popular holiday tunesmiths ever. “When the Jose Mari Chan meme first came out, it was funny,” says Jugueta. “But then, people just do it every year and it becomes not as funny anymore. Anyway, one time I posted a challenge to my Facebook friends: instead of posting about Jose Mari Chan, why don’t you write your own Christmas song? ‘Have A Merry Christmas’ is an attempt to do so.”

Intricately arranged with Beatlesque pop harmonies, swoony string arrangements, and catchy, sing-along moments, “Have A Merry Christmas” fills the air with comforting message of joy and positivity. In describing the musical process behind the Christmas bop, Chino Singson, The Itchyworms’ guitarist, envisions a lush template in mind: “The melodies are definitely Britpop, and our classic shuffle a la Akin Ka Na Lang and Chocophotoland completes the aesthetic vibe.”

Written by Jugs Jugueta, “Have A Merry Christmas” is a “smorgasbord of Christmas tropes or cliches all rolled into one song.” Nicolas adds, “When you mix them all together, you get a song that pretty much says, Merry Christmas!”

Maligayang Pasko: A jazzy, tropical-infused jingle

Helmed and produced by Jazz Nicolas, “Maligayang Pasko” takes you back to the ‘70s and early ‘80s era: a laid-back, groovy tune that winks toward Manila Sound and city pop. It’s a nostalgic Hallmark anthem whose groove, to quote Nicolas, “is partly based on a latin or bossa nova beat, mixed with funky guitars.” 

The multi-instrumentalist member of The Itchyworms also add a little bit of camp experimentation in the mix in an attempt to highlight the band’s sense of musicaladventurousness. Nicolas recalls, “I was very excited to use a combination of a vocoder, which is sort of a voice synthesizer and a text-to-speech type program to sing the chorus harmonies with us. I programmed three tracks of text-to-speech saying ‘mah lee guy young pass koh’ and tuned each them to sing in harmony.”

This organized chaos resulted into a Christmas song dipped in Tropicália and jazzy elements, and serves as an exploration into an unfamiliar sonic territory.

Both “Have A Merry Christmas” and “Maligayang Pasko” exude the timelessness of holiday songs, and its significance in bringing festive cheer to everyone, despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic. As Kelvin Yu puts it, “I feel that Christmas should still be celebrated this year, especially with the important people in your lives. This year has been tough on everyone, and has made us all appreciate our loved ones, and we can keep them close and celebrate life with them every day, and not only on Christmas.”

Miley Cyrus drops retro-inspired album, Plastic Hearts

After peaking at No.1 on iTunes Philippines with her first single “Midnight Sky” and revamping the ‘80s discotheque with her Dua Lipa-assisted jam “Prisoner,” pop trailblazer Miley Cyrus makes an explosive return with the release of her highly anticipated new album, Plastic Hearts, out now via RCA Records.

Miley’s seventh studio album features collaborations with Billy Idol, Joan Jett and Dua Lipa. In a handwritten letter about the new album, Miley recalls that she began writing the album over two years ago. 

“Thought I had it all figured out,” she wrote. “Not just the record—its songs/sounds but my whole fucking life. No one checks an ego like life itself. Just when I thought the body of work was finished it was all erased, including most of the music’s relevance because everything had changed.”

Built around retro-inspired bangers and thumping stadium anthems, Miley’s new sound gives listeners a renewed sense of appreciation for music made in the ‘70s and ‘80s, as seen in her cover art, which was photographed by iconic rock & roll photographer Mick Rock. Rock adds Miley into the list of artists and legends that he has photographed over the years, including David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, and Debbie Harry.

Bianca releases stripped-down version of Rivermaya’s“Hinahanap-hanap Kita”

Acoustic pop newcomer Bianca drops a stripped-down version of Rivermaya’s ‘90s classic song “Hinahanap-hanap Kita,” out on November 26, Thursday via Sony Music Philippines.

Delicately arranged with acoustic guitars, lush strings, and subtle electronic beats, Bianca’s rendition of the 1997 alt-rock staple makes good on the promise of the original’s melodic sensibilities, while infusing a more poignant take that resonates with the generation of young listeners today.

“I’ve come to realize that I have this tendency to make songs more melancholic because of the fact that I’m more drawn to sad music,” the promising singer-songwriter explains. “This time, I was able to express my own style authentically and show my emotions meaningfully in singing. Through experience, I’ve learned the importance of owning a song by altering its characteristics and technicalities, and ensuring that it’s suited to my personality and liking.”

Being a fan of Rico Blanco herself, Bianca decided to cover one of the singer-songwriter’s biggest songs as a form of tribute. Bianca clarifies, “I also had no specific plans of having this as my second single. However, when I made my own rendition of this song for my guesting at RX 93.1, a lot of people enjoyed it and I did as well. Because of the interest of others, I thought of sharing and releasing it.”

“Hinahanap-hanap Kita” is co-produced by Bianca and 6cyclemind’s Rye Sarmiento, and was recorded at the Backdoor Recording Studio a few months ago. Sarmiento was instrumental in molding the finishing touches of Bianca’s first single “Biglaan,” which to date has racked up more than a million streams on Spotify alone. 

Bianca specifically wanted to work with the prolific producer again because she knew for a fact that the material would be in good hands. “The experience that I had recording with sir Rye was very laidback and fun because of how patient and supportive he was with me as a newcomer in the industry. As a result, I definitely would love to work with him again on future projects.”

The teen songstress plans to step back from doing covers and start releasing new songs that she’s written during the quarantine period. Bianca admits, “I’m still a bit hesitant about it because of my fear of people seeing me be so vulnerable through my music, but thanks to my loved ones and the management I’m in, their continuous love and support motivates me to release my own work.”

From Singapore to Australia: Wovensound headlines hip-hop collab jam “No Road Home”

Hip-hop producer Wovensound has brought together Singapore rapper Ihasamic! and Vietnamese-Australian hip hop artist Joey Maker for his latest single, “No Road Home,” released under international record label, Umami Records.

“No Road Home” is an eclectic blend of old school hip-hop beats, haunting piano chords, conscious rapping, and even a suave guitar solo. In terms of creative inspiration, Wovensound cited Immortal Technique’s“Dance With The Devil” as the track responsible for laying the preliminary touches of his latest collab song. “I wanted a beat that felt that way and brought out that kind of vibe and emotion in people”, said Wovensound.

The lyrics of “No Road Home” tell a cautionary tale of flexing and lying for short-lived clout, and suffering the consequences after. Joey Maker shares, “My writing was inspired by the stories of some of my close family and childhood friends - kids I used to see weekly as I went through high school but have lost contact with since adulthood. Growing up amongst the Australian-born Vietnamese community, there was always a mystique and a lure - even an idea of status - associated with gang culture. We idolised triad movies like Young and Dangerous and looked up to Sydney gangs as much as we feared them. Unfortunately, some of the kids I grew up with got caught up in the image - the image became their reality, and they never made it back. I still think about them today.”

“No Road Home” is the second single of Wovensound’s 6-track debut EP Vertigos Fulfilled, dropping in June 2021. Wovensound and Ihasamic! will also be releasing their 4-track collaborative EP REPACK in early 2021.

“I met Joey Maker almost 3 years ago while I was interning in a studio in melbourne, he came by with fellow rapper Clue to record and mix a track and we hit it off. He is a stellar dude and they were making an awesome track. 

But back then I was still making metal music so working with him didn't really cross my mind till this year when I started delving into hip hop. I hit him up to see if he was interested and sent him the beat. He came back with his verse and the hook he recorded in Aussie and the song just grew from there. 

When I first heard that hook I was like DAMN. We have something here hahaha. I managed to convince Ihasamic to get in on the 2nd verse. Emotional frailty as source of strength: Get to know PhilPop’s Metro Manila entries

PhilPop, the country’s premier songwriting competition, makes another huge comeback with an exemplary batch of music entries from the National Capital Region.

With a diverse showcase of sounds spanning R&B, contemporary pop and folk-influenced genres, the latest roster offers catchy, radio-friendly fodders that tackle romance, forgiveness, and regret with precision and sensitivity. 

Produced by PhilPop and distributed by Warner Music Philippines, this Friday’s commendable picks include two compositions by Aikee namely “Mapa,” interpreted by Chloe Redondo and Aikee himself, and “Bestiny,” interpreted by Kevin Yadao and Jr. Crown. Composer Kian Dionisio rounds up the Metro Manila cluster with his compelling original “Huling Sayaw,” interpreted by NyoyVolante.

Two Entries

Prolific rapper and singer-songwriter Aikee Aplacadorsnags two entries at this year’s PhilPop 2020 finals round.

On “Bestiny,” Aikee expresses his frustration on navigating the harsh realities of dealing with unrequited love and friendship. Kevin Yadao and Jr. Crown trades verses with smooth effortlessness, singing atop upbeat melodies, warm R&B beats and indelible harmonies.

“Mapa” is Aikee’s tribute to the parents that served as guiding light in times of utmost difficulty and trouble. This time, the acclaimed composer recruits newcomer Chloe Redondo on the inspiring pop/R&B ballad.

Both songs channel Aikee’s pop and urban sensibilities, while harnessing his skill as a versatile songwriter with a knack for inescapable chorus and earwormy hooks. 

Life regrets as song inspiration

Kian Dionisio pens a heartfelt anthem of regrets and what ifs in life on “Huling Sayaw.” Delicately woven with lush keyboards and stripped-down arrangements, his song “Huling Sayaw” was inspired by Dionisio’s music career and the frustrations that come with nurturing the process. “I’ve been told that I was a late bloomer, not brave enough, and not driven enough,” Dioniso shares. “knew from the very beginning that I am a dreamer. But as I age, I started regretting all the opportunities and time that could’ve been so productive. If only I had started so much earlier, maybe I’m already living THE DREAM right now. This is one of my biggest regrets in life and I tried to incorporate the idea to the song.”

Acoustic pop balladeer Nyoy Volante interprets Dionisio’smelancholic piece with just the right amount of skill and restraint. Volante worked hand in hand with Dionisio in capturing the emotional frailty of the track, delivering it with his own touch while staying true to the original’s message.
