KAIA chronicles personal journey to stardom on “You Did It” music video

KAIA has officially released the music video of their new single “You Did It.”

Helmed by Raymond “Pabi” Fabian and Francis “Kiko” Magundayao, the visuals mark the five-member group’s transformation from the debut years to their more confident and refined phase. It also features the origin story of the dragonfly, a metaphorical symbol of their journey as a Filipino girl group trying to make it in the competitive music industry landscape.

As the MV puts it, KAIA, with their wings spread, is now ona journey to explore greater distances.

The P-Pop group reveals that they’re also more involved in the concept of the music video, even going as far as embracing darker themes and injecting ideas inspired by their personal experiences.  

“We really like being involved because it helps us interpret our songs better and perform with more passion,” shares the Dalawa act in a press statement. “We made sure that everything, from outfits to the set design and even our facial expressions, aligned with the music's theme. The goal was really to elevate the message of the song through visuals, so we put in extra effort for this MV.”

KAIA also credited their two MV directors, “Pabi” and “Kiko,” for bringing immense creativity to the project and being highly collaborative with the visual storytelling.

The acclaimed pop act explains, “They were able to translate what we envisioned, making the whole process smooth and enjoyable. Their direction made us feel comfortable and confident on the set. Because of thisexperience, we were able to focus on our performances while they take care of the bigger picture. Overall, it was a collaborative effort that we are very proud of.”

“You Did It” is a dance-pop track that brims with Persian-style instrumentation and modern pop sensibilities. The song was produced by Oh-won Lee, Michael James Down, Will Taylor, and Primoz Poglajen, with lyrics by Jonell "J.O" Sarmiento, a former Z2Z member. KAIA also contributed to the overall concept and narrative of the track.

Through this song, KAIA aspires to be the voice or instrument of people who can't speak up and who don't have the courage to stand up for themselves. “So that when they listen to the song, they'll feel more confident and empowered,” adds the feisty five-piece collective.

The producer recently shared on Instagram the inspiration behind the captivating Album Art, designed by Clara Cayosa. Reflecting on his profound admiration for Filipino Mythology, he delves into the significance of the Balete tree, a sanctuary for mythical beings. He explains, "I've always been captivated by the Balete tree, so as part of my album research, I made it a mission to seek one out." His quest led him to the majestic Millennium Tree in Baler. He mentions that much like the Millennium Tree, he aspires for the album to endure the passage of time, leaving a mark for generations to come.

What eventually became Buzz, the third studio album by singer-songwriter and globally-renowned star NIKI, started with an urgent quake from the innermost core of her being. What surfaced in its wake was a collection of warm, stirring folk-rock songs, which crackle and flare like a bonfire between close confidantes. “I went through an identity crisis,” says the 25-year-old of Buzz. “It took a lot of trial and error, and I just stumbled upon pieces of myself along the way. I named it Buzzbecause it feels like I'm on the precipice of something about to happen.”

 

For NIKI, things have been happening progressively since she was a high schooler in Jakarta, Indonesia. As a student at an international academy, she cut her teeth scribbling lovesick poems in English class and performed acoustic guitar covers of American pop songs on YouTube. With a six-string in hand, and her family and classmates cheering her on from the audience, Nicole Zefanya then staked her claim to global stardom as NIKI.

 

And claim it she has - with over three billion streams worldwide, sold out shows on multiple continents, massive sets at festivals across the globe, front row seats at Paris Fashion Week, four songs on a Marvel film’s soundtrack, and some of the most phenomenal, confessional songs being released in 2024, NIKI has already established a veteran’s resume before the age of 25.

 

On Buzz, her songwriting remains as intimate as ever. In her initial sketches of songs for Buzz, NIKI took cues from other lane-paving women with confessional, honest lyricism soundtracked by guitars. “Joni Mitchell is my songwriting north star,” she says — and uncompromising feminist luminaries like Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon and Liz Phair. To match the wandering spirit of Buzz, NIKI cultivated her own elastic approach to guitar.

 

To further harness this creative and personal sea change, NIKI began enlisting producers who had worked with her favorite contemporary singer-songwriters. She tapped Tyler Chester, who’d captured tracks with Madison Cunningham and Sara Bareilles; she also recruited Ethan Gruska, who counts Fiona Apple and Phoebe Bridgers as collaborators.

Buzz reverberates with the hard-earned wisdom of a young woman who charges dauntlessly towards her dreams — but can still spare a laugh if she stumbles.

Bradley Simpson shares new single “Picasso”

Bradley Simpson’s debut solo single ‘Cry At The Moon’ occupied a rarely explored sweet spot between styles: classic ‘70s Americana with a surging intensity which echoes the swaggering spirit of the indie-rock greats, but also with the contemporary, pop-tinged edge that can only come from an artist who has headlined London’s 20,000capacity O2 arena on multiple occasions. From that compelling introduction, Bradley now powers into the release of his new single‘Picasso’.

 

Produced by the two-time Grammy nominee BOOTS (Beyoncé), with a dreamy undercurrent of ‘60s psychedelia and wonky bedroom pop, ‘Picasso’ is symbolic of what Bradley does so well: creating songs with an instant appeal, yet with lyrical nuances that provide a relatability for people to forge a deeper connection with. Its striking lyric “turning torture into art” commands attention and inspires deeper investigation of the narrative behind it.

 

Bradley says, “‘Picasso’ is about one of those toxic loves that you know is bad for you, but there’s something amazing about it that keeps you coming back. You always hope that things are going to turn out for the best, so you keep giving chances when maybe in hindsight you should’ve stopped early doors. You also come across people who can find dress-up those hardships as part of romance. That song allowed me to exorcise those experiences and move past them.”

 

‘Picasso’ and ‘Cry At The Moon’ set a high watermark for more to come from Bradley. Many of his upcoming songs were written in the comfortable confines of his home studio: a converted loft space accessible only by a rickety ladder. Recording sessions were similarly modest, with the grimy, graffiti-clad exterior of New York’s Flux Studios opening to reveal a space steeped in history, its collection of vintage gear and stale cigarette haze the place where The Strokes recorded their classic debut ‘Is This It’.

 

But while the locations were unassuming, his key collaborators were top tier. In addition to super producer BOOTS, Bradley spent much of the process writing with kindred spirits in the shape of Andrew Wells (YUNGBLUD, Halsey) and Anthony Rossomando (Liam Gallagher, and a founder member of Dirty Pretty Things with Carl Barât). They shared his admiration for Queens of the Stone Age, The Raconteurs, Them Crooked Vultures and The Black Keyswhich helped to unlock the creative process, while Bradley’s lyrics became intimate, diaristic snapshots of intensely personal experiences rich with precise details that can only be written after they’ve been lived through.

Ben&Ben finds meaning in impermanence on new single “COMETS”

Multi-awarded Filipino band Ben&Ben invites listeners on a journey of self-introspection with the release of their new 2024 single “COMETS,” out today via Sony Music Entertainment.

“COMETS” is an emotional track that conveys the ephemeral nature of relationship fallouts anddisconnections. While the song looks back at memories with mixed feelings of loss and pensiveness, the experience that it brings offers a bright promise of hope and acceptance, no matter the end result.

“Though mostly dwelling on that feeling of loss, the song ends with the hopeful realization of gratitude—being thankful for ever having experienced any of it at all,” Ben&Ben explains in a press statement.

According to Paolo Benjamin and Miguel Benjamin, the songwriters’ behind “COMETS,” the pop-rock tune was inspired by the many losses of people that they’ve encountered in different parts of their lives over the past four years: breakups, end of friendships, parting ways with professional relationships.

“With each loss comes a painful process of asking why the nature of life is as such,” reveals Ben&Ben. “The answer is hardly ever straightforward, but reveals itself over long periods of time. COMETS is an expression of that very journey, and hopes to help the listener through these realities in their lives too.” 

“COMETS” has gone through several iterations since the band started jamming it together in the latter parts of 2021. The Filipino band admits that it’s one of the songs that they’ve spent the longest trying to fine tune and play around with, in terms of arrangement and song structure. Eventually, Ben&Ben found the right musical direction and vision for the song, pulling from their own experience of loss to settle on a version that they’re most comfortable working with.

The Sa Susunod Na Habang Buhay hitmakers eventually recruited Indonesian producer Petra Sihombing to be part of the project, adding final but pivotal touches to the track.

“He flew in to help us bring the song to the next level, with his own additions in both the arrangement and post production of the track,” the nine-piece collective recounts. “The band probably had about 90% of the song down, but it was Petra's very weighty 10% that really helped make the song what it is now.”

A message to LIWANAG

The band hopes that LIWANAG, their fanbase, would resonate to the parting words of the song, particularly the lines, “though these nights are turning gray, still I am thankful for what's passed I know there will come a day when I will finally understand.” For Ben&Ben, gratitude and hope can come without totally understanding the "whys" behind it all.

“We're on the same journey of finding these answers ourselves — of why life is fleeting. And with that hope comes the strength and courage we need to keep going, to keep loving, and to keep on finding meaning in our experiences.”

Tokyo-based and wildly special progressive-pop girl group, ATARASHII GAKKO! formally announce their upcoming album AG! Calling out via 88rising on June 7. Fans can pre save the music on their website HERE. 

They have also unveiled a highly anticipated PT. II of their 2024 World Tour. As the talented group wraps their Europe and Asia legs in June, this Fall they will make their way to major North American cities, encompassing large statement plays from the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago to Pepsi Center in Mexico City.

AG! Calling explores the theme of "Calling," drawing from the dual meaning of the word "korin [降臨]" in Japanese, signifying both "calling" and "to descend" or "to arrive." This linguistic nuance serves as the album's backbone, symbolizing ATARASHII GAKKO!'s presence as they descend into various aspects of our lives. Visualized in the cover art, the girls metaphorically "land" in different dimensions of existence, serving as steadfast companions and empowering cheerleaders. Their message resonates with encouragement and support, inspiring confidence and resilience in listeners to embrace their unique potential.

The album follows a series of far-reaching, breakthrough singles that put ATARASHII GAKKO! on the global stage. Earlier this week, it was announced that a new song from the album, “Fly High,'' will serve as the opening theme for the Netflix crossover animated film Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura, out June 7. It showcases the battles between iconic characters from Keisuke Itagaki’s “BAKI” and Yabako Sandrovich’s “KENGAN ASHURA.”

These new tour dates follow on the heels of absolutely epic performances at Coachella 2024, including solo sets closing out Gobi stage both weekends and an appearance in 88rising Futures. The crowd’s reaction to the girls' inimitable stunts and iconic dances was palpable. The solo sets were filled with surprises including an appearance from taiko drummers, the USC marching band joining in for “Tokyo Calling”. Los Angeles Daily News raved, “For sheer smile-on-your-face fun it was hard to beat ATARASHII GAKKO! at Coachella.” While The Japan Times echoed, “The four members delivered a nonstop burst of pop energy spiked by the sort of thrills Coachella crowds love.”

ATARASHII GAKKO! (literally meaning “new school” in Japanese) are a group of four young women who are redefining what it means to be a girl group. They wear sailor-fuku (sailor suits) uniforms in a style that were worn by Japanese students back in the 70s and 80s with long skirts and pulled-up socks, and staunchly refuse to be objectified. Their aggressive and expressive dance moves, which they choreograph themselves, are a hybrid of the energy of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal headbanging, and hip-hop street dancing. Musically, AG! She brings together elements of modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, rap, punk, dance music, but it would be pointless to try to categorize them in any genre. Their global reach is undeniable, with their theatrical music promoting individuality and self-expression transcending language and cultural barriers. After a highly successful year of firsts, with a debut on U.S. television with “Tokyo Calling” on Jimmy Kimmel Live and a TikTok of the same track joined by Megan Thee Stallion, ATARASHII GAKKO! are primed for their farthest-reaching album yet.
